Teenager Mboko stuns Gauff at Montreal
London
Coco Gauff was sent crashing out of the National Bank Open in Montreal in straight sets by Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko.
The 18-year-old, ranked 85 in the world, needed just 62 minutes to beat the top seed 6-1, 6-4 and book a place in the quarter-finals.
'It's incredible,' she said on court after her victory. 'I'm so happy to beat such a great champion.' Mboko made her WTA Tour debut in March and took Gauff to three sets in Rome in her second event.
She raced through the first set in 25 minutes, breaking the American three times.
The second set was a tighter affair which went on serve for the first 11 games.
Gauff failed to convert three break points throughout the set, Mboko seizing on her sole opportunity to close out the victory.
World number two Gauff said: 'I think she's going to have a lot of success on tour. I'm sure we're going to have many more battles in the future.'
She will face Lin Zhu of China or Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the last eight.
Osaka posts second-quickest win of career
Naomi Osaka delivered one of the most imperious performances of her career to reach the quarter-finals, racing past Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 6-0 in just 49 minutes.
That's the second-quickest completed tour-level win of her career, following her 42-minute 6-1, 6-1 rout of Ana Sofia Sánchez in the first round of Florianopolis 2016. It's also the first time Osaka has conceded just one game or fewer in a completed match since she defeated Danielle Collins 6-1, 6-0 in the second round of Beijing 2018.
The former World No. 1 advances to the last eight of a WTA 1000 or Grand Slam tournament for the first time in 19 months, since Doha 2024. It is the second time she has made the quarterfinals at the Canadian WTA 1000 event, following her run to the last eight of Toronto 2019.

Raducanu adds Nadal's former coach Roig to team full-time
PA Media/DPA London Emma Raducanu has added Rafael Nadal's former coach Francis Roig to her team on a full-time basis ahead of this month's US Open, the PA news agency understands. The 2021 winner at Flushing Meadows has worked with British coach Mark Petchey on an informal basis since March and enjoyed a positive run of results. However, Petchey's TV commitments meant he was always unable to become Raducanu's full-time coach and after a trial with Roig following Wimbledon, the 22-year-old will begin work with him in Cincinnati this week after he agreed a contract until the end of 2025. Raducanu has struggled to settle with a coach in recent years until her part-time work with Petchey started to pay dividends earlier this season. A WTA 1000 quarter-final showing at the Miami Open in March was followed by a round-of-16 run at the Italian Open before she made the last eight in the first women's tournament at Queen's Club. Aryna Sabalenka proved too strong for Raducanu in round three at Wimbledon, but this was backed up by a semi-final at the Citi Open as the British number one targets being seeded at the US Open later this month. TV commentator Petchey, who worked with Andy Murray at the start of his career, revealed in July that Raducanu would need to find a full-time coach soon and she has in Roig. Spanish coach Roig worked with Nadal alongside Nadal's uncle Toni for the majority of the 22-time grand slam champion's career and more recently was part of Matteo Berrettini's backroom staff. Raducanu will stay close to Petchey, PA understands, but turns her focus back to rising up the WTA rankings with a strong display at the Cincinnati Open over the next fortnight. Djokovic drops out of Cincinnati after skipping Toronto Novak Djokovic has opted not to play the Cincinnati Masters after he already failed to make an appearance in Toronto, organizers confirmed on Monday following a report by The Athletic. This means Djokovic will have not played a professional match in more than a month when he starts another bid for a 25th Grand Slam title at the US Open later in August. The 38-year-old Serbian last played at Wimbledon on July 11 where he was defeated by eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. Italy's Sinner, 23 and current world number 1, and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, 22, are set to play in the Cincinnati Masters 1,000 after they also skipped Toronto, with main draw play due to begin on August 7.

Salah scores as Liverpool unleash $359 mn new signings vs Athletic
PA Media/dpa London Liverpool showcased £270 million ($359 million) worth of new signings in the 3-2 friendly victory over Athletic Bilbao but the goals still went to established Premier League winners Mohamed Salah - who also missed a late penalty - and Cody Gakpo. Florian Wirtz's first look at Anfield gave fans a glimpse of why the club made him their - and with add-ons potentially a British - record signing with some clever touches and interplay and almost the opening goal. Head coach Arne Slot believes the Germany international will replace the creativity they lost from the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid. 'I think there is always room for improvement in every department and we have added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons,' said the Dutchman. 'Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third and we have lost with Trent a lot of creativity from the back.' 'Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special - Flo has this quality in a totally different position. He brings that creativity.' Wirtz's fellow new signings also showed they were settling in well as Jeremie Frimpong linked up well with Salah, fellow full-back Milos Kerkez was solid and Hugo Ekitike showed flexibility across the forward line. Wirtz headed onto the crossbar before Ekitike crossed for Salah to fire home and Gakpo scored twice after the break after Oihan Sancet had levelled. Liverpool went into the double-header with just one recognized centre-back with Virgil van Dijk ill and Joe Gomez injured and looked vulnerable at set-pieces, with Maroan Sannadi heading an equalizer from a corner. 'The other games pre-season we have conceded a few too many chances but today we hardly conceded anything at all and that pleased me as well,' added Slot. 'So to concede two set-piece goals in the second game is not what you want, especially if you play Crystal Palace next week who are a team who are very strong on set-pieces. That's another thing to work on.' In both matches Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last month, was remembered with fans standing and clapping and singing the forward's song. When the clock showed 20, action on the pitch also halted as players and officials joined in the applause. Liverpool's second string won 4-1 earlier, after an erroneous fire alarm had evacuated the Main Stand before kick-off, with 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha continuing his impressive pre-season form with a goal after just 87 seconds. Ben Doak, three years his senior, also scored while there were goals for Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott, two players whose futures appear to be away from Anfield. Nunez, who has been linked with Al Hilal for a while with AC Milan also opening talks over the Uruguay international, thumped the badge on his shirt in front of the Kop while Elliott was the last to leave the pitch having blown kisses to all four sides of the ground.

Palace face Fredrikstad or Midtjylland in Conference League play-off
PA Media/DPA London Crystal Palace have been drawn to face either Fredrikstad or FC Midtjylland in the Conference League play-offs. The Eagles are scheduled to face the winners of the third qualifying round tie between Norwegians Fredrikstad or Danish club Midtjylland at Selhurst Park on August 21, with the second leg a week later. Palace qualified for the Europa League after their FA Cup win over Manchester City in May, but were demoted to the Conference League after breaching UEFA's rules on multi-club ownership. They have submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but with that decision not expected until next week, they remain in the draw for Europe's third-tier competition.
