ITBP edge past ten men Karbi Anglong Morning Star in Group D opener

Durand Cup debutants Indo Tibetan Border Police FT edged past ten men Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC 2-1 in the Group D opener of the 134th Indian Oil Durand Cup which was played at the SAI Stadium in Kokrajhar. Lunminlen Haokip gave the lead for Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC but goals from Pulung Diamary and Hemraj Bhujel gave the para military side the victory and three crucial points. Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC (KAMSFC) Head Coach C A Laldinsang Pudaite named a strong line up which included three foreigners in Joseph Olaleye, Victor Jackson and Ben Nash Quansh while ITBF FT Head Coach Surojit Kumar named a strong line up in a traditional 4-4-2 formation. In another match, a headed goal by Indian Air Force FT defender Sankit, in the last minute of added time, helped his team earn a thrilling 3-3 draw against debutants South United FC (SUFC), whose number nine Makakmayum Daniyal had earlier set alight the Durand Cup, with the first hattrick of the tournament. In a Group A encounter played at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan (KBK), the Boys in Green from Bengaluru, in their debut campaign at Asia's oldest tournament and coming off a 0-5 reverse in their first game, displayed exceptional character against much experienced opponents led by the calm and clinical Daniyal, but in the end both teams deservedly spit points. In Assam, both debutant teams were trying to take control of the midfield which made an intriguing battle with both sides cancelling each other out in the centre of the field. KAMSFC, who play in I-League 3, were reduced to ten men in just the 23rd minute when Ghanaian centre back Ben Nash Quansh received a direct red card for a reckless two footed challenge. The referee has no choice but to send off the defender. ITBP took control of possession using the man advantage but it was the side from Assam who drew first blood. Lunminlen Haokip neatly finished a counter attacking move to give his side the lead in the 30th minute. The striker could have doubled the lead minutes later when he pounced on a mistake by the ITBP goalkeeper Ugesh Lama. The goalkeeper could not gather a cross cleanly and Lunminlen who was lurking around pounced but could not put the finishing touches. ITBP equalised in the final minute of first half regulation time through Pulung Daimary, whose neat side footed finish found the bottom right corner after taking a deflection of the defender. KAMSFC were brave with their attacking plays, without fearing about the man disadvantage with Joseph Olaleye creating the most trouble, but there weren't any clear cut chances that troubled the ITBP goalkeeper. ITBP scored the second goal in the 60th minute with a neat team move. Srikumar Karjee received a long diagonal pass in the right wing and the winger fended off two defenders and drilled a low cross into the box which was expertly finished by Hemraj Bhujel past the diving goalkeeper Gojen Hanse. The Assam side could not create any meaningful chances even after having the ball inside the opposition's half as the man disadvantage made it difficult to have more people inside the box. The best chance to equalise came deep into stoppage time but ITBP goalkeeper punched a header by Lunminlen which was heading into the goal. ITBP maintained the slender advantage until the final whistle and secured three crucial points in the group. Durand Cup action will shift to Kolkata on Monday, as Kolkata giants Mohammedan SC will take on another Kolkata side Diamond Harbour FC in an enthralling Group B fixture at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. Daniel's hat-trick in vain as IAF FT holds South United

Indian Air Force Football Team produced an equaliser in the final minute of added time to hold tournament debutant South United FC 3-3 in a Group-A league match of the 134th Durand Cup at the Kishore Bharati Stadium here on Sunday. Young striker Makakmayum Daniel completed a fine hat-trick giving South United the lead twice in the match but IAF mounted a great fightback to snatch a point in the end. The 18-year-old Daniel found the target in the ninth and 23rd minutes before Mohammad Aqib (26th minute) and Akish Cyril (48th) got IAF back in the mix. Daniel completed his hat-trick in the 84th minute with a spectacular volley but IAF defender Sankit nodded home the equaliser to spoil South United's party. Earlier, debutant Indo Tibetan Border Police Football Team (ITBP FT) edged past a 10-man local side Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC 2-1 in the Group-D league opener at the SAI Stadium, Kokrajhar. Lunminlen Haokip gave Morning Star the lead but ITBP FT fought back well and scored twice through Pulung Diamary and Hemraj Bhujel to secure the win. The results: Group-A: South United FC 3 (Makakmayum Daniel 9, 23, 84) drew with Indian Air Force FT 3 (Md. Aqib 26, Akish Cyril 48, Sankit 90+6). At Kokrajhar: Group-D: ITBP FT 2 (Pulung 45 Daimary, Hemraj Bhujel 60) bt Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC 1 (Lunminlen Haokip 30).

Durand Cup 2025: South United FC & Indian Air Force Play Out Thrilling 3-3 Draw

Makakmayum Daniyal netted the first hat-trick of the 134th Durand Cup, but South United FC and Indian Air Force played out a 3-3 draw. A headed goal by Indian Air Force FT defender Sankit, in the last minute of added time, helped his team earn a thrilling 3-3 draw against debutants South United FC (SUFC), whose number nine Makakmayum Daniyal had earlier set alight the 134th Durand Cup, with the first hat-trick of the tournament. In a Group A encounter played here at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan (KBK) on Sunday evening, the Boys in Green from Bengaluru, in their debut campaign at Asia's oldest tournament and coming off a 0-5 reverse in their first game, displayed exceptional character against much experienced opponents led by the calm and clinical Daniyal, but in the end both teams deservedly spit points. How South United FC And Indian Air Force Played Out 3-3 Draw? For the men in green, coach Kaja Mohideen Bhadussa to his credit, chose to put faith in the same eleven that began the game against East Bengal on the opening day of the tournament on July 23rd. Priya Darshan had the experienced duo of Saurav Sadhukan up front and Shibinraj in goal and began with a 4-4-2 formation. SUFC struck early as the impressive Huzafah Ahmad Dar put Daniyal through with a great threaded pass and the number nine side-stepped the experienced Air Force keeper to calmly slot in the opener. It was definitely an enthusiastic start from the Bengaluru boys and it was just four minutes on the clock. The lead doubled in the 23rd minute and it was Daniyal at it again, latching on to a long ball by keeper Nishanth. He had to hoodwink defender Tombing and also seemed to have lost control of it for a while, but he recovered well to have a second grab at it and finished calmly yet again past Shibinraj. The airmen got one back soon after as Aqib came over from deep defence to get behind a pass outside the SUFC box by Akhish from midfield and unleash a left-footed grounder past Nishanth's near post. It was also square for the first time in the game soon after the lemon-break when the tireless Akhish, this time after initiating a move from the right flank, then finished himself with a snap shot after latching on to a loose ball in the box off a melee. The game seemed sealed for South United when Tombing's attempted headed clearance after a corner from the right flank fell to Daniyal, whose volley on the turn took an outstretched Shibinraj's palm before going in. The Airmen true to their never give up spirit however fought till the last minute of the six minutes of added time and it paid off when Sankit got his head under a long ball from the left, rising up highest in between two defenders to slot home. view comments First Published: July 27, 2025, 21:41 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
