BJP legislators meet to push for elected government in Manipur ahead of Delhi talks
Ahead of a high-level meeting between Manipur's civil society organisations and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in New Delhi on the ongoing crisis in the state, the Bharatiya Janata Party has convened a meeting of its legislators to push for the restoration of an elected government in the state. 'The BJP legislators have already signalled to the Centre that they are ready to form a popular government,' said former Chief Minister Biren Singh while speaking to reporters after the meeting. advertisementThe meeting comes as part of the BJP's broader roadmap for restoring peace and governance in Manipur, which has been under President's Rule since February 13, following months of ethnic unrest. Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister on February 9 amid mounting pressure and internal dissent within the BJP.
Singh welcomed the scheduled talks between major civil society organisations — Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), and Federation of Civil Society Organisation (FOCS) — and the MHA, calling it a constructive step towards reconciliation and peace. Monday's meeting in Delhi will mark the third round of dialogue between the civil society groups and central officials regarding the state's crisis.Manipur has been without a functioning elected government since the imposition of President's Rule, following the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023. advertisementOf the 60 seats in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, one is currently vacant due to the death of NPP MLA N. Kayisii (Tadubi constituency). Among the 59 remaining members, 22 BJP MLAs attended Sunday's meeting.Eight BJP MLAs were absent, reportedly due to health issues or prior commitments. The BJP holds 32 seats in the House, supported by five former JD(U) MLAs who later joined the party, bringing its effective strength to 43 MLAs.Other parties in the assembly include the National People's Party (6), JD(U) (6), Naga People's Front (5), Kuki People's Alliance (2), Indian National Congress (5), and three independents. Despite some alliance partners and an independent MLA withdrawing support, the BJP continues to maintain a majority. However, a significant political divide remains. Ten Kuki-Zo MLAs — including seven from the BJP — continue to demand a separate administration for their community, advocating for Union Territory status in response to the ethnic unrest.State BJP president A Sharda Devi, reiterated the party's commitment to public sentiment.'To form a popular government, public support is essential. During the recent meeting with central leaders, they acknowledged the sentiments of the people of Manipur who are longing for the restoration of a popular government,' she said. The developments come amid growing calls from both civil society and political actors for the re-establishment of democratic governance in the conflict-affected state.- EndsMust Watch

'Namazvad, not Samajwad': BJP attacks Tejashwi for 'will bin Waqf Act' remark; says 'won't happen'
NEW DELHI: The ( ) on Monday went all out in its attack against (RJD) leader , after he vowed during a rally in Patna to "throw the Waqf Act into the dustbin" if the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) is voted to power in the upcoming . Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Tearing into the rival INDIA bloc, which also includes the RJD, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi pointedly criticised socialist parties -- accusing them of "not standing up for the rights of the poor and oppressed Muslims". "These parties like RJD, Samajwadi Party, etc, who are wearing the garb of socialism, are not standing up for the rights of the poor and oppressed Muslims. Therefore, the socialism of RJD and SP cannot be called socialism at all. If it is called 'Namazvad', then it will not be an exaggeration," Trivedi said during a press briefing on Monday. The BJP leader claimed Tejashwi's remark was made "in the pursuit of the vote bank" and said the Congress-led INDIA bloc has "not been able to move beyond the 50-year-old mentality of throwing the Constitution in the dustbin." Trivedi was referring to the 1975 National Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which caused massive upheaval across the political spectrum. The BJP leader also said that the remarks of ex-Bihar CM Lalu Yadav's son had "no respect for the Parliament, judiciary" as the Waqf Act was passed by both Houses of the Indian Parliament. "Recently, 50 years of the Emergency, the most dreadful chapter in the democratic history of India, were completed. But it is very sad that yesterday in the same Gandhi Maidan in Patna, where during the Emergency lakhs of people had gathered without caring for their lives to protect the Constitution, a rally was held in which Tejashwi Yadav said that we will throw the law passed by the Parliament in the dustbin," Shudhanshu Trivedi said during media briefing. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Stepping up an attack on the anti-BJP bloc, Trivedi said: "I want to ask the INDI alliance, are you thinking of implementing Sharia law in Bihar, which is bigger than Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey and ISIS?" He further said: "BJP and the NDA alliance are determined that if anyone wants to throw Baba Saheb Ambedkar's constitution, any of its provisions, into the dustbin, we will not let that happen." The politics around Waqf appear to have been reaching to its boiling point as Bihar goes to the polls for 243 assembly seats in a few months. The BJP, led by Prime Minister Modi, is contesting in alliance with Nitish Kumar's JD(U) under the NDA banner. Meanwhile, Tejashwi Yadav's RJD, as part of the opposition INDIA bloc, will challenge the ruling alliance in the state elections. Tejashwi is the Mahagathbandhan CM face.

Opposition Accuses Odisha BJP Govt of Delaying Rath Yatra to Facilitate Adani Family's Participation
Government A political blame game has started over the delay in pulling the chariots on the occasion of the annual Rath Yatra. People gather near the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra during the annual 'Rath Yatra' festival celebration, in Puri. Photo: PTI New Delhi: The opposition has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Odisha of deliberately delaying in pulling the chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings in Puri on Friday (June 27) to allow the family of industrialist Gautam Adani to pull the chariots. 'The entire administration was there but watched helplessly as the chariots remained halted. There was much talk about Gautam Adani and his family's visit to participate in the Rath Yatra. Even the chief temple administrator said the chariots might have halted in anticipation of some devotees. Hence, we find it fair to conclude that the delay was orchestrated to facilitate the Adani family's participation,' said Congress leader and former minister Prasad Harichandan, reported The Telegraph. Harichandan called for a judicial inquiry by the sitting district and sessions judge of Puri into the incident. A political blame game has started over the delay in pulling the chariots on the occasion of the annual Rath Yatra. 'We aren't here to point fingers or blame the administration for yesterday's inordinate delay in pulling the Nandighosa chariot. But it's impossible not to voice our deep concern and anguish over how things unfolded during the most sacred event in our State. It's hard to forget how, last year, Lord Balabhadra's idol slipped during the Adapa Bije Pahandi – a moment that left countless devotees shaken,' Bju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo and former Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik posted on X. 'And now this year, we witnessed Nandighosha Ratha still standing at the Singhadwar till 7.45pm, only to move a few metres before the day ended. That understandably has left lakhs of devotees, who came from all over the world to witness this unique event, completely disenchanted and disillusioned. Hundreds of devotees also got injured due to poor crowd management,' he added. The BJD also demanded the resignation of incumbent Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and law minister Prithviraj Harichandan over the mismanagement. BJP leader and minister Harichandan accused the opposition of trying to politicise the issue and said 'god will not forgive them'.
