Newlyweds Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez want R3,3m in damages from her brother
The Amazon founder and his wife are demanding R3,3 million in legal costs from Lauren's estranged brother, Michael Sanchez, following years of bitter court battles which have torn the family apart.
While R3,3 million might be pocket change for the world's third-richest man, the couple's lawyers aren't letting it slide.
They recently filed a motion demanding that Michael pay R3,2 million in attorney's fees as well as R143 594 in legal costs.
The motion, which was filed in July, says that these costs came about because of a successful Special Motion to Strike and a later motion for attorney's fees.
The filings refer to California's Anti-SLAPP law, which protects people from lawsuits that try to scare or silence them about things that are important to the public.

The family drama began in early 2019, just as Jeff announced his divorce from MacKenzie Scott after 25 years of marriage.
At the time, the tech mogul was rumoured to be romantically involved with Lauren, who had separated from her then-husband, Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell.
Their budding romance took a dramatic turn when American tabloid, The National Enquirer, threatened to publish intimate photos and explicit text messages between the couple.
Jeff beat the tabloid to the punch and published descriptions of the images himself, along with his correspondence with the tabloid's owners on Medium.
'I had nothing to do with the leak of the pics,' Michael said previously.
'There are, like, 20 d*ck pics. Lauren likely shared them with multiple girlfriends – not in a malicious way, that's not her style, but when she's in love, she got a kick out of sharing them.'
He claims Lauren once tried to show him one of the images. 'I was like, 'What the f**k is wrong with you? I don't want to see that!''

In 2020, Michael unsuccessfully sued Jeff for defamation. The following year, Jeff was awarded R3,9 million in legal fees, but the back-and-forth litigation continued.
Michael has denied leaking the pictures but it's been reported that he had signed a nondisclosure agreement about the couple's alleged affair.
However, Michael claims he worked with the tabloid to help his sister, not harm her.
Lauren's version of events paints a different picture.
'Michael secretly provided my most personal information to the National Enquirer – a deep and unforgivable betrayal. My family is hurting over this new baseless and untrue lawsuit, and we truly hope my brother finds peace,' she said in a lawyer's letter.
Despite the ongoing family chaos, the newlyweds seem unfazed by the legal drama.
They've been spotted partying across Europe, from exclusive Ibiza nightclubs to double dates with Leonardo DiCaprio and his girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti, aboard Jeff's R8,7-billion superyacht.

Importers struggle to resell Canadian canola meal caught in China tariff crossfire
By Naveen Thukral SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Importers are struggling to resell several cargoes of Canadian canola meal that arrived in China after Beijing imposed hefty import tariffs on the protein-rich ingredient, three trade sources said. Up to 400,000 metric tons of canola meal, used mainly in animal feed, is sitting in secure warehouses near Chinese ports, with importers facing a 100% duty if they release the cargoes for sale in the domestic market. "It is not viable to pay the duty, so we are looking at the possibility of re-selling it to other markets, maybe to feed-makers in Southeast Asia or South Korea," said an executive with a trading company that is one of the importers of canola meal. "But it will have to be at a discount," the person said, declining to be named as they were not authorised to speak to media. Traders said the canola meal was being offered at a discount of about 30%. The stuck cargoes underscore the struggles of agricultural companies caught in the middle of trade standoffs, at a time when Washington and Beijing's tariff war has disrupted trade in farm products including soybeans. China on Tuesday announced a preliminary anti-dumping levy of 75.8% on imports of canola oilseed from Canada, escalating a year-long trade dispute that began last August with Ottawa's tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports. In March, China imposed a 100% tariff on Canadian rapeseed oil, oil cakes and pea imports. "These measures show how the Chinese government is super angry with the Canadian government," said a trader at a company which runs oilseed processing plants in China. "They suddenly increased the duty to 100% on canola meal, which was not expected." Two of the traders estimated the stranded canola meal volumes at 400,000 tons, while one trader said it was around 200,000 tons. At 400,000 tons, the value of canola meal stuck at Chinese ports is worth around $120 million, traders said.

BP-Eni Venture Puts Namibia Oil Find on Fast Track to Output
Azule Energy, a BP Plc and Eni SpA joint venture, is fast-tracking its Namibia oil operations as it competes with companies including TotalEnergies SE to be among the first to produce crude in one of the world's newest hotspots. Azule last year negotiated a stake in Namibia's block 2914A from operator Rhino Resources, and the partners found oil at the Capricornus well in April. A final investment decision on the project by the end of next year is challenging but possible, which would mean production can begin by 2029, Azule's Chief Executive Officer Adriano Mangini said.
