A dog and its owner walking through scrubland in Port Lincoln, about 250km (155miles) west of Adelaide, made the grisly discovery when the pooch ran off and didn't return.
SA Police Major Crime boss Darren Fielke said on Thursday: "Earlier today, police received information from a member of the public in Port Lincoln that they had located in a scrub area what appeared to be a human skull
"There are some walking tracks through there, my understanding is the person who contacted us today was walking their dog in the area. The dog ran off into the scrub, it didn't come back when called.
"They had to walk into the scrub area to find it [the head]. [The remains] were not buried. They were quite out in the open."

The remains are now set to be tested and forensically confirmed as those of Julian's.
Fielke said: "Julian's family have been contacted today and provided an update in relation to what has been located and what the ongoing process is from here.
"Hopefully we can give them some comfort that we have found all the remains of Julian."
Officers made the grim discovery last month after responding to reports of a small fire.

Beauty & The Geek star's shock transformation from reality TV glam to shaven-headed suspect in boyfriend's decapitation
She appeared in Port Lincoln Magistrates Court via video link on Thursday for three separate matters.
Last month, police circulated CCTV footage and stills of a woman alleged to be Chesser strolling through Port Lincoln hours after the alleged murder.

The woman was seen with three dogs — dressed head-to-toe in black with a head covering, cops said.
Court documents reveal officers found Chesser sitting in the back garden of the property 'in a catatonic and unresponsive state' before arresting her.

She's also been charged with disposing of human remains to pervert the course of justice and assaulting a police officer,
Police have said there's no obvious motive, with Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott admitting there were still 'a lot of unanswered questions' in what he described as a complex crime scene.
Chesser's sister, Kiya-May, claimed her family is shattered by reports she'd been charged with murder.
They told Daily Mail Australia: 'Please report how my sister is in a mental psychosis... This is not her... She would never do these things.'

She added her sister had suffered 'a life of trauma and abuse, and now this – it has fried her brain'.
Meanwhile, Mr Story's grieving family has thanked police, emergency workers and the community for their support during what they called an 'unimaginable loss'.
Chesser appeared on Season 2 of the hit show in 2010 aged just 19.

Arrests were also made in Canary Wharf in a separate demonstration PROTEST ARRESTS Police make arrests at Palestine Action protest in Parliament Square as hundreds gather after group banned POLICE have made arrests at a Palestine Action protest after the group was labelled a terror organisation. The Met Police said arrests have been made at the Palestine Coalition march in London's Russell Square and Parliament Square. Advertisement One person was arrested "for a placard showing support for Palestine Action", the force said. Clusters of officers could be seen holding individual protesters sat on the edge of the grass and escorting them through swelling crowds to police vans. A separate group of officers could be seen attending to a protester lying next to the fenced-off Emmeline Pankhurst statue. The main, larger group of protesters in the middle of the central London square remained sat quietly holding their placards. "Within this crowd a significant number of people are displaying placards expressing support for Palestine Action, which is a proscribed group. "Officers have moved in and are making arrests. "The Palestine Coalition march (a separate protest) has set off from Russell Square heading to Whitehall via Aldwych and the Strand. Advertisement "So far there has been one arrest at that event - for a placard showing support for Palestine Action." Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, is leading the policing operation, said earlier: 'This is going to be a particularly busy few days in London with many simultaneous protests and events that will require a significant policing presence. "I'm grateful not just to the Met officers who will be working incredibly hard over the coming days but to those colleagues from other forces who have been deployed to London to support us. 'Our role in the context of protest remains as it always has been – to police without fear or favour, to enforce the law, to keep the peace by ensuring groups with opposing views do not come together and to prevent serious disorder and serious disruption to ordinary people going about their lives.
