Passengers trapped after bus leaves road in Somerset crash
The A396 is closed in both directions near Wheddon Cross, with fire, police and more than six ambulances all on scene.
A local pub, The Rest and Be Thankful, near Exmoor, is working as an emergency centre for the crash.
Avon and Somerset Police said: 'Emergency services are responding to a collision on the A396 Cutcombe Hill, between Wheddon Cross and Timbercombe.
'Calls came in at about 3 pm reporting a bus had left the road near the junction with Ashwell Lane and Steart Lane.
'Most passengers have been taken off the bus. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are working to free the remaining occupants, and the ambulance service is also on the scene.
'We have no confirmed information on the number of casualties or the level of injuries. Emergency services have well-rehearsed plans for responding to such incidents.' More Trending
Initial reports have claimed the bus was carrying children on a school trip but this hasn't been confirmed.
South Western Ambulance Service said they are responding to the scene. The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance left and landed in Bristol.
MP Rachel Gilmour said: 'I have heard news about a distressing road traffic incident around Wheddon Cross this afternoon.
'Emergency services are present, so please give them space to work. My thoughts are with all involved in the incident.'

E-scooter riders could be forced to display licence plates, pass a test and have insurance under a proposed crackdown aimed at restoring order to the streets. Other measures being drawn up by ministers include a minimum age for users and forcing manufacturers to limit their speed. The aim is to tackle a black market of the 'menace' scooters which has seen some modified into vehicles almost as large as small motorbikes or turbocharged to go at speeds of up to 70mph. The plans will be welcomed by police. Last year, the Mail revealed e-scooters were linked to more than 20,000 crimes over the previous three years, including drug trafficking, sex offences, thefts and even a 'drive-by' shooting. They will also be applauded by road safety campaigners and disability charities, who have long warned that vulnerable people such as the elderly and blind have been mown down by yobs riding them on pavements or obstructed by them being left abandoned in the streets. A Government source told the Mail: 'E-scooters can be a great way to get around but they must be properly regulated, safe for pedestrians as well as riders and we must ensure they cannot clutter up our streets.' Prominent road laws lawyer Nick Freeman, known as Mr Loophole, said the current law was effectively acting as an 'open invitation to commit any form of offence and avoid detection'. He added: 'The delay to bringing in proper legislation is effectively giving the green light for e-scooters to be used to commit all forms of criminal activity. They're stealth-like and there's no registration plates so the police have very little chance of apprehending anyone. They're a menace. 'E-scooters are subject to the Road Traffic Act 1988 but they don't need registration and that's the vital piece of the jigsaw that's missing. It makes current legislation impotent. Licensing them and registering them is the start so that they're treated like mopeds.' The crackdown would target privately-owned e-scooters rather than those available to rent, as these already require proof of a driving licence and age. Privately-owned e-scooters are banned on roads. But their use exploded during Covid and there are now thought to be as many as one million on the roads, meaning police effectively often turn a blind eye. However, ministers believe legalising them while introducing tough laws around registration and licensing would make it easier for forces to pursue thugs using them for crimes or riding dangerously. It is also hoped that introducing a basic test could improve safety, as young users currently jump on them without a driving licence or any knowledge of the roads. According to Government sources, ministers will consult on a minimum age of 14 for using the scooters as some children use them to get to school. Introducing mandatory 'rider training', akin to a driving licence for motorists, will also be considered as will insurance although sources stressed this is unlikely to be adopted because of the sky-high cost of premiums. By contrast, insurance for e-scooters in countries such as Germany is available for as little as £20 a year. Finally, ministers will look to force manufacturers into limiting their speed to 12.5mph. Margaret Winchcomb, of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, said: 'Bringing in long-promised legislation will mean the UK, now the last country in Europe lacking regulation, will be able to deal with the irresponsible sales of illegal vehicles to children and improve safety for all road users.'

Florida official under state investigation after hosting LGBTQ event
Florida's attorney general announced Tuesday that he opened an investigation into the vice mayor of Vero Beach over a drag show held last month. Attorney General James Uthmeier alleged the 'Pride Tea Dance' that Vice Mayor Linda Moore held at the Kilted Mermaid, a wine bar she's owned for more than a decade, exposed children to a 'sexualized performance.' Uthmeier's office said Moore advertised the Pride Tea Dance on social media as 'all ages welcome,' but that the drag performances 'featured adult, sexualized performers in front of children, in violation of Florida law,' according to a press release from the attorney general's office. Neither the press release nor the subpoena Uthmeier's office sent Moore on July 8 specify what state law(s) she is under investigation for allegedly violating. Uthmeier's office did not immediately respond to questions. The subpoena, which Moore has to respond to by Aug. 8, requested surveillance video recordings of the exterior and interior of the Kilted Mermaid on the day of the Pride Tea Dance; copies of employee work schedules for June 28 to June 30; copies of documents that identify the performers for the event; and documents identifying security personnel or other staff responsible for checking identification and allowing entry, among other information. Moore said she was confused by the subpoena, particularly because it doesn't contain any claim of wrongdoing. 'We have the event every year, it's our gay pride event, and it is all ages,' Moore said in a phone interview. She said the bar has held the event for at least the past five years. 'It's a family-friendly event, and then once the drag show actually starts, we tell the parents who have small children that they can't stay for the show.' Sometimes parents want to stay anyway, Moore said, so she has maintained a policy that the first drag performance will be 'really tame,' with no profanity. Later on, when all the children are gone, the performances can be 'a little racy,' she said, but even during the adult-only performances, 'there's never nudity at any drag show.' The event first garnered criticism after it was the subject of social media posts from Jennifer Pippin, who leads a local chapter of Moms for Liberty, a national conservative parents organization. Pippin wrote in a Facebook post the day after the event that she submitted a complaint to the attorney general's office 'to formally report a violation of Florida's 'Protection of Children Act,' specifically Senate Bill 1438,' which prohibits children from attending 'adult live performances.' However, judges blocked the law from taking effect, suggesting that it is likely unconstitutional due to how broad and vague it is. The case is awaiting a trial in the Middle District of Florida. Critics have said the law defines adult live performances in a way that would include businesses that host drag shows. Pippin told NBC News she didn't know the law was blocked when she reported the event to the attorney general's office, but that the office told her other state laws restrict adult live performances. She said she did not attend the event, but she pointed to social media photos and videos that show children were in attendance. Pippin said children appeared to be there the entire night, a claim Moore disputes. Pippin said she asked Moore to resign during a city council meeting Tuesday. 'We have to protect the innocence of children at all costs from live adult entertainment shows,' Pippin told NBC News. 'We are happy the AG is on board with our sentiment as well.' Moore said the photos shared by Pippin, which, for example, show a performer in lingerie, mischaracterize what happened at the event. The photos that Pippin shared that show children at the event show that it was still light outside, Moore said, during the family-friendly portion of the event. The photos of the performer in lingerie, which don't show any children, were taken later in the evening during the adults-only portion of the event. Moore said that, despite the backlash, the community has been overwhelmingly supportive. 'We're not a gay bar. We're just a neighborhood bar, and we welcome everybody,' Moore said. She added that some community members have been worried that the Kilted Mermaid will stop hosting its LGBTQ-inclusive events, but she said that won't happen. 'We are committed to supporting everyone in the community like we always have, and gay pride will continue, and drag queen bingo will continue,' Moore said. 'Nothing has changed for us.'

The unidentified holidaymaker appeared to yell 'hijo de puta', which translates in English to 'son of a b****', before being hit. Local reports have claimed the tourist had been voicing his discontent at the cop over his aggressive attitude towards the African beach sellers who gather on Marbella's seafront in the summer and sell counterfeit goods like sunglasses and bags in breach of municipal regulations. Police officers were reportedly seen pushing one of them before the holidaymaker assault as other chased fellow street sellers trying to run away with their belongings. Despite the clip appearing to identify the police officer as the aggressor, the elderly tourist is understood to have been arrested. Another tourist donning a pair of swimming trunks, filmed being surrounded by seven officers and pinned to the ground following a shouting match, attempted to intervene but also ended up being arrested. In a separate video, one vendor appeared to have broken part of the officer's helmet while punching him in the face. As one man repeatedly punched and kicked the police officer, the other took a moment to pick up his fallen wares. The two vendors then quickly escape, and the beaten officer was joined by a backup cop, all while tourists vacated the area. The astonishing scene unfolded in front of British tourists, with one forced to jump out of the way as the violence flared yelling: 'What the f***! That was mental.' Another was heard exclaiming: 'That was the most insane thing I've ever seen.' Police later claimed the 'looky looky' men they have to deal with on a regular basis are getting more and more aggressive and don't think twice about employing violence when cops try to stop them and seize their merchandise because they know the courts will let them off with little more than a fine if they can be tracked down and identified. Marbella Town Hall has not yet commented on the actions of the police officer seen slapping the tourist filmed insulting him at the weekend. They said the incident had happened during a routine police inspection against itinerant street trading. Police officers on quads are carrying out more regular inspections during the summer in Marbella.
