I went on wild night with Kate after William dumped her… it was a reality star's advice over cocktails that won him back

The Sun29-04-2025
PRINCE William and Kate Middleton are celebrating 14 years of marriage today but if a reality star hadn't got involved and offered her some dating advice, the pair might not have reunited after their split in 2008 - and I witnessed it first hand.
It was like a real life fairytale when Kate, 43 first met William, 42, at the University of St Andrew's in 2001.
11
Ten years later, she was walking down the aisle at Westminster Abbey to marry her prince in the wedding that was watched by 2.5 billion people worldwide.
But back in 2007 it had looked like their courtship was over after a rocky period lead to the future king ending things, over fears they were getting too serious.
There was talk of courtiers starting to look for a suitable date for a wedding and china cups being made ahead of a royal engagement- and William who was only 25 at the time had seen first hand the effect a painful divorce had on his parents and was understandably a bit panicked and got cold feet.
As a newly single man, William 'celebrated' being back on the market with a trip to his favourite nightclub Mahiki, a Polynesian themed bar in Mayfair where he apparently leapt up on a table, shouting: 'I'm free!'
While heartbroken Kate was given a week of compassionate leave from her job as a children's accessories buyer for high-street brand Jigsaw.
But rather than eating ice cream on her sofa in her pyjamas watching Bridget Jones' Diary, she kept herself busy.
She was whisked to Ireland by her mother Carole Middleton to attend a family friend's private exhibition. The mother and daughter saw the paintings, attended the champagne reception and then completed a cultural day with a tour of the National Gallery of Ireland.
Without the constraints of dating the future king, Kate was free to let her hair down and accept invites to the numerous events that were sent to her every week.
She had the perfect wing woman in her sister, Pippa, who was relatively unknown at the time.
Pippa had just finished her undergraduate degree in English Literature at the University of Edinburgh and moved into Kate's Chelsea flat.
They went out so much that they topped Tatler's Most Invited list that year.
The pair would hit the town immaculately turned out with spray tans and blow dries.
As well as partying in Mahiki, where Wills had been a few days earlier, the two appeared together at a series of upmarket social events - one of which was where I spotted her.
We were both at the launch of the book Young Stalin by Simon Sebag Montefiore at luxury jeweller Asprey on 14 May 2007.
Of course being a young plucky journalist, I went over to ask the prince's then ex about the split but Kate, who was even more beautiful in the flesh, was diplomatic in her responses.
She told me: 'I'm here for Simon, I don't really want to talk about anything else because it will take away from his special day. I'm looking forward to reading his book because I studied History of Art at university so anything historical interests me."
At the time, she had been offered a huge payday of £1m by ITV to go into the jungle and compete on I'm A Celebrity but simply smiled when I asked if she was interested in eating kangaroo testicles on live TV.
She also told me that she was planning 'to book a holiday somewhere hot' but added 'I'm sure you understand why I don't want to tell you where I'm thinking of going'.
But while she didn't want to open up to a journalist, she was keen to speak to Tara Palmer Tomkinson, who sadly passed away in 2017.
WILLS 'MISSING OUT'
They had a serious tete a tete in the corner while both sipping on Margaritas. Luckily I remained in earshot of their conversation so was privy to Tara doling out the advice.
While socialite Tara, was famous for appearing on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and Celebrity Fame Academy, she was also connected as the then Prince Charles ' god-daughter so she understood how the Royal Family worked.
Tara cornered Kate at the bash and immediately asked her: 'Do you want him back?' Kate of course said: 'Yes. I love him.'
Tara told her: 'Keep your chin up. Say nothing, do nothing and you'll be fine and he'll come back.'
11
At the time, William Hill was giving odds of 8-1 that Tara would be William's next girlfriend.
On hearing that people were betting on this, the party girl exclaimed, "That is ridiculous, honestly I've never heard anything like it."
She told me: 'I think William will be back as soon as he realises what he's missing out on.'
Of course, she had known Princes William and Harry since they were children.
'William, Harry and me – we grew up together,' Tara once said. 'They are lovely, naughty boys. There is a complete code of trust there, a code that says, 'Zip it and treasure it'. I have a thing about trust: it is priceless.'
Kate was hanging on her every word and the rest is history.
Shortly after that event William and Kate had a secret meet up at Clarence House and then a pub in Highgrove where the prince confessed he missed her and wanted to get back together.
But Kate had told him that she needed more time as she had been badly hurt by the break up.
In June 2007, mutual friend Sam Waley-Cohen invited both Kate and William to a party at his family's 17th century manor house and according to one guest, they spent hours in deep conversation.
Speaking at the time Sam said: 'There's an idea that I was like Cupid with a bow and arrow. People love the idea that somebody put them back together but they put themselves together far more.'
She was then invited to a party with the theme 'Freakin' Naughty' at The Prince's army barracks in Dorset.
William wore hot pants and a policeman's helmet which must have impressed Kate as she stayed over. They were officially back together but kept their rekindled relationship under wraps.
11
In July 2007, Kate helped William make last minute edits to a speech he was giving at a tribute concert at Wembley to honour his mother Princess Diana and mark the ten-year anniversary of her death on what would have been her 46th birthday.
While William sat next to his best friend Thomas van Straubenzee alongside Harry and his girlfriend in the Royal box, two rows back Kate was seated alongside her brother James.
Then two weeks later she was in attendance at Camilla's 60th birthday party at Highgrove.
William and Kate opened up about an earlier split while they were at St Andrew's together during their interview by Tom Bradby to celebrate their engagement in 2010.
"We were both very young," William explained.
"It was at university, and we were both sort of finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff, it was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up.
"It was just sort of a bit of space and a bit of things like that, and it worked out for the better."
INSIDE THE SPLIT
Kate added: "I think I... at the time wasn't very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person. You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn't realised, or I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger and I really valued that time for me as well although I didn't think it at the time. Looking back on it."
Kate never forgot the advice Tara gave her that fateful night. Regular ski trips to Klosters followed and Tara and Kate went on to become good friends. The socialite was there when the pair tied the knot at Westminster Abbey in 2011.
In 2012 - a year after the couple's wedding - Tara praised Kate for doing 'such a good job'.
'She is beautiful and capable, sort of super-grounded, but really fun too,' she said. 'I think she has done something amazing – I am really proud of her. Whenever I see her on the cover of another magazine I smile."
She also said that Kate made her think of William's late mother, Princess Diana. 'She reminds me of his mother – something about her eyes.'
Of course the pair have gone on to have a happy marriage and three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
It's not been all easy as they coped with the news that the Princess of Wales had been diagnosed with cancer in March 2023 but now she is in remission it seems there is plenty to celebrate.
I hope the pair toast their 14th wedding anniversary today and there are many more to come.
Kate Middleton's love of recycling clothes
KATE Middleton might be a Princess, but that certainly doesn't stop her from rewearing her favourite frocks.
Jenny Packham Gown: She first worn the frock to an ARK Gala Dinner in June 2011, and then rewore it three years later to the National Portrait Gallery in February 2014.
Alexander McQueen Coat Dress: Kate donned the beautiful number for Trooping the Colour in June 2016 and then just a year later, was spotted in it again for the Easter Service, in April 2017.
Temperley London Dress: She first wore the black lace dress at the War Horse Premiere, in January 2012, but then, just months later, donned it again, at the St. Andrews University Gala, in December 2012.
Hobbs Coat: Even Kate is a fan of a staple coat, as she's reworn a classic number from Hobbs, which she first wore on Christmas Day in December 2012, and then again on a visit to Newcastle, in October 2013.
Kate Middleton's sartorial choices continue to inspire many, proving that elegance and sustainability can go hand in hand.

Prince Harry and Prince William face 'chaotic' reunion after years of bitter silence

Prince William and Prince Harry have been locked in a sad feud for years, but one very special event might see the two brothers come together in the same room Prince William and Prince Harry could come face to face at an upcoming royal wedding, despite their ongoing rift. ‌ The two warring brothers have reportedly not spoken for years, despite Harry expressing his desire for a reconciliation with his family. ‌ Those close to William, however, have shut down the chance of healing deep wounds, citing Harry's years of public attacks against the royal family. It comes after reports that William was 'human shield' in tense moment between Princess Kate and Meghan. ‌ But the feuding siblings both look set to receive an invitation to the wedding of their cousin, Peter Philips. Peter - Princess Anne's son - announced his engagement to pediatric nurse Harriet Sperling on 1 August, saying at the time that William and his wife, along with King Charles and Queen Camilla, had been informed of the happy news prior to the official announcement. Peter and Harriet are yet to announce their wedding date but speculation over the guest list is already rife, and the happy day may see both Harry and William with the event in their calendar. ‌ Peter - the late Queen's eldest grandchild - and his sister Zara grew up with both William and Harry, and was very close to the brothers. However, Harry's attacks on the royal family in recent years has left him practically estranged from the Firm, and it is thought that if only one Prince attends, it will be William. According to Hello magazine's royal correspondent Danielle Stacey, Peter and William have a close relationship. "Peter has been viewed as a supportive older brother figure to Prince William, and the pair have held a close relationship since childhood," she said. ‌ "Peter previously said of his cousins that there was 'quite a gang of us' and they 'caused quite a bit of mayhem and chaos'." It's not the first time that William and Harry have faced an awkward wedding invite clash. Harry reportedly chose to skip the June 2024 wedding of Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, and Olivia Henson, which William attended as an usher. ‌ The couple also recently welcomed their first child - and it seems likely that the future king will be the one to be a godparent. Jennie Bond told the Mirror: "As with a marriage break-up, many of William and Harry's friends have been left feeling obliged to take sides. Hugh was good friends with both William and Harry but, since the brothers' dramatic rift, the Duke Of Westminster has had to navigate a tricky path. "And it seems he has largely sided with William, (at least in public). It was William who was invited to the big wedding, he was an usher, and William who stood alongside Hugh and his new wife Olivia cheering on Aston Villa in their exciting Champions League quarter final." ‌ READ MORE: Prince Harry's 'sadness' at losing out to Prince William is 'price to pay' in bitter rift Given the Duke's long history with William, Jennie believes: "If there is to be a royal godfather to the couple's newborn daughter, the likelihood is that it will be William. There's already lots of 'cross pollination' between the families as far as godparents are concerned, so it seems likely that William will be asked." She continued: "These awkward decisions are made slightly easier by the fact that Harry lives so far away, with no prospect of ever moving back to the UK. And that's not the ideal way to carry out any godparenting duties. "So I think Harry will understand if he is left out and William is chosen as godfather. But it must still be rather sad for him to see his once close friends carrying on their lives without him, while William continues to enjoy the warmth and fun of their friendship. It is, however, the price he has to pay for making such damaging allegations and causing such a bitter rift with his family."

Mother of God! Adrian's praying that Ted survives in Line Of Duty: EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE

Rumours that William and Kate want to 'upsize' to Fort Belvedere in Windsor Great Park are wide of the mark. Upsizing could make life difficult for William. He is in the midst of a campaign to 'eradicate homelessness ' – a vision sometimes stymied by his own surplus bedrooms. Apart from his relatively humble four-bedroom Adelaide Cottage at Windsor, he has Anmer Hall in Norfolk and a 20-room apartment at Kensington Palace. He will inherit a lot more. As well as being in line for the keys to Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, the future king also gains Clarence House, Balmoral, Birkhall, Sandringham and, via The King's Foundation charity, Dumfries House, the Castle of Mey and property in Romania. That's a lot of bedrooms for a family of five. Far-fetched claims that the Queen Mother 's heroic alcohol consumption gave Princess Margaret foetal alcohol syndrome focuses attention on the thirsty royal's daily booze intake. HM commenced with a noon cocktail, a potent mix of two parts of the fortified wine Dubonnet to one part of gin. This was followed by red wine and port for lunch. At 6pm, she would ask equerry Major Colin Burgess: 'Colin, are we at the magic hour?', kickstarting the evening with three Martinis followed by champagne during dinner. 'She had a fondness for red wine, particularly heavy clarets, which she loved,' recalled Burgess. 'We drank a bottle and a half at my first meeting with her.' Adrian Dunbar, pictured, admits to apprehension about receiving Jed Mercurio 's script for the seventh series of the BBC 's Line Of Duty, telling Radio Times: 'We're desperately keen to hear what the story is. God knows what's going to happen to any of us. If this is to be the last of it, then you suspect that something dramatic is coming. One of the shocking things that I realised after series two was that the writer can just do away with you.' Will Adrian be praying for survival to Jesus, Mary and Joseph and the wee donkey? Following his friend Sir Bob Geldof 's Sky TV rant over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Jools Holland, host of the BBC's Later... With, announces his determination not to replicate Gary Lineker and to keep his opinions to himself. 'I support Bob,' he says. 'But I have to be careful because if I say something, it's, 'Oh, this guy from the BBC says this,' and they blame the BBC. Also, I'm a deputy lieutenant in Kent and you're really not supposed to express your personal political views, so I don't.' Among notable absentees from Lord Tebbit's funeral last week was Sir John Major, who incurred his wrath when he had an affair with Edwina Currie, prompting Tebbit to conclude: 'Nobody terribly bright could be dragged into bed by that awful bloody woman.' 'I was set on fire aged 3 - 300 surgeries later, a special gift has given me my life back'

A woman who experienced a freak horror accident at the age of three has thanked the tattoo artist who helped heal her trauma with a special design - and has nominated her for a Pride of Britain award A mum who tattoos beautiful designs over scar tissue to give people back their confidence has been nominated for a Pride of Britain award. ‌ Artist Kate Challinor, who is based in Leeds, has been praised by her friend Sarah Allum, 49, after she was gifted an arm tattoo through Kate's charity, the Inkredible Foundation, to cover up extensive burns from a freak childhood accident. ‌ Mum of two Kate, 46, suffered years of surgeries due to her own health issues, which left her with permanent scarring. ‌ 'I wouldn't have had the confidence to go somewhere to have my scars covered,' she says. With the encouragement of a friend, she decided to teach herself how to use a tattoo gun. After 12 months of practise, she was ready for her first client: a pal who was left with scarring after having a single mastectomy to treat breast cancer. ‌ After two years of freelancing, Kate launched the Inkredible Foundation in May 2023 - a charity that offers tattoos of any size to cover scars, completely for free. And in the short time since its launch, Kate has tattooed more than 70 women left with surgical scars that were having a ''detrimental effect'' on their daily lives. Kate says: 'It's about making them feel beautiful again. Every scar has got its own story. Everyone who comes through the door, if they've got a scar, they've usually got trauma. They want to heal from their trauma, and having the tattoo is just part of that.' ‌ She adds: 'Some of these ladies, especially the breast cancer survivors, wouldn't let their husbands see them naked again, so it's lovely helping them get their confidence back. Their husbands love me! 'We should be proud of our scars. Usually they're a result of surviving something; they're a reminder to us to celebrate what we've overcome.' Sarah Allum found out about the charity and, in October 2024, travelled from her home in Cornwall to meet Kate and to start the two-day process of covering the third-degree burn scars on her right arm and shoulder. ‌ 'I was set on fire aged three and sustained 46% third-degree full thickness burns,' she tells the Mirror. 'I've had more than 300 surgeries to date on my burns, which cover the right side of my body; my chin, neck, chest, torso, right arm, underarm and shoulder. ‌ 'It's basically most of my right side - front side, and back from my chin and hip.' Sarah was thrilled with the results of Kate's work and the positive impact it has had on her mental health. 'I'm more outgoing in myself,' she smiles. 'I'm happier. My kids have noticed the difference, too. This is the first summer in my life I have felt good wearing a short-sleeved top. 'After my early trauma, I can never overstate what a huge step mentally that has been for me - and I have Kate to thank.' ‌ Sarah has nominated Kate as a Local Hero in the 2025 Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards with P&O Cruises. 'Kate has her own health struggles, yet she puts 110% into everything she does,' Sarah added. 'She has gifted so many people with tattoos that change people's lives in such a positive way. ‌ 'I was one of those lucky people. The confidence she has given me is fantastic. I owe this beautiful lady the world for what she has gifted me.' Kate adds: 'I'm honoured and touched that I've been nominated for a Pride of Britain award, that's lovely to me that someone believes in me that much.' The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards with P&O Cruises honour the nation's unsung heroes, with the star-studded celebration screened every year on ITV.
