Ahmedabad to host CWG 2030 review team from Commonwealth Sport body
The delegation arrived in New Delhi on Sunday and is also scheduled to hold talks with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). With Canada recently withdrawing from the race, India has emerged as a strong contender to host the prestigious multi-sport event, and the Ahmedabad visit is being seen as a vital checkpoint in that journey.
Delegation to assess readiness
The visiting team, representing Commonwealth Sport (formerly known as the Commonwealth Games Federation), will examine the city's proposed infrastructure and logistical capabilities. Ahmedabad has been identified as the proposed host city in India's official expression of interest (EOI) for the 2030 Games.
An official familiar with the visit confirmed the timeline, stating that the team will begin its city tour on Tuesday and will evaluate potential venues and support systems during the three-day visit.
IOA, Gujarat officials in focus
Prior to the Ahmedabad leg, the delegation held preliminary discussions with IOA officials in New Delhi. Sources indicate that a larger Commonwealth Sport delegation is expected to return later this month for further evaluations. Meanwhile, Gujarat's administrative machinery is preparing to showcase Ahmedabad's readiness to host a sporting event of this scale.
Final bid deadline nears
India must submit its final bid proposal by August 31, after which Commonwealth Sport's general assembly will decide the host nation in November during a meeting in Glasgow.
According to IOA executive member Harpal Singh, the selection will focus on factors like sustainability, regional accessibility and flexibility in hosting models—criteria that India is confident of meeting.

Bengaluru: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) on Thursday mourned the sad demise of Dr Vece Paes, the member of the bronze medal-winning hockey team in the 1972 Munich Olympics and father of Indian tennis legend Leander Paes. Dr Paes passed away in Kolkata on Thursday morning after he was admitted to Woodlands Hospital late on August 12 with multiorgan dysfunction due to lower respiratory tract & gastrointestinal tract infections. He was 80. "On behalf of everyone at IOA, expressing our deep sadness on the news of the passing of 1972 Munich Olympic Medalist Dr Vece Paes. Our thoughts and prayers with Leander and family during this incredibly difficult time," IOA shared on X. An unshakable pillar of Indian sports, Dr Paes leaves behind a legacy of achievement both in and out of competition, motivating countless athletes and sports admirers. 'On behalf of KSLTA, we express our deepest condolences to Leander, his mother Jennifer and the entire family on the passing of Dr Paes. It is indeed a sad day for sports in general as Dr Paes was a great advocate of building a strong sporting culture in the country. He was in the forefront of sports science in the country and his contributions to Indian sports eco system will be remembered forever,' expressed Sunil Yajaman, joint secretary of KSLTA. 'Dr Vece Paes was a dear friend and I personally have learnt a lot from him and I remember many sessions where I have sat and listened to his experience on handling and creating world-class sports persons. He was one of the finest human beings I have met. On behalf of KSLTA Executive Committee, I hope his family will have god's strength to bear with this irreplaceable loss. It's a personal loss for me and great loss for the Indian sporting fraternity,' he added. Born in Goa in April, 1945, Dr Paes was exceptional in both sports and academics. Beyond his athletic achievements, he was also a doctor of sports medicine and served as president of the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club. started his medical practice at NRS Medical College and Woodlands Hospital in the 1960s. In addition to hockey, he showed his skills by playing divisional cricket, football and rugby. His love for rugby led him to become the president of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002. He was chairman of the AIFF Medical Commission from 2003 to 2006. He later served as chairman of the AIFF Medical Committee from 2017 to 2020.

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday formally approved the country's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games during its Special General Meeting (SGM) here with its top officials saying that India would host an 'inclusive' edition featuring all 'medal-earning' sports. India has already submitted an Expression of Interest for the 2030 CWG with Ahmedabad as the host city. But the nation will have to submit the proposals for the final bid before the August 31 deadline. P T Usha said Ahmedabad, 2010 host Delhi and Bhubaneswar are being considered. IOA CEO Raghuram Iyer said 'we cannot say anything as of now', when asked whether there is a chance of more than one city hosting the 2030 CWG. India's chances of getting the 2030 CWG have increased after Canada pulled out With Canada having pulled out of the race, India's chances of getting the 2030 CWG have brightened. 'The plan is to have all our medal-earning sports like shooting, archery, wrestling etc. Our traditional sports like kabaddi, kho kho, and yoga should also be there,' IOA joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey said. A team of officials from Commonwealth Sport (earlier CGF), led by its Director of Games Darren Hall, recently visited Ahmedabad to inspect the venues and meet Gujarat government officials. Asked about the feedback from the Commonwealth Sport delegation, Iyer said, 'I was part of the delegation and they came to look at the venues and the readiness of all the things that are going to be available at the venues and the infrastructure. 'Overall they have gone back happy and by the end of the month, now that we have the go ahead of the General Body, we will be putting in the proposals.' A bigger delegation of Commonwealth Sport is expected to be in India later this month or in September. ' We will have all the sports we are good at and have a chance of winning maximum medals,' said Executive Council member Rohit Rajpal. 'There are three groups of sports. First is core sports of the Commonwealth Games which are always there, then are sports which the host nation can choose and the third one are the additional sports. The 2030 will be an inclusive Games and will feature our traditional and indigenous sports also,' Rajpal added. General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport will decide the host country The General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport will decide the host country in the last week of November in Glasgow. India has previously hosted the 2010 edition of the multi-sporting event in Delhi. The SGM was preceded by the Executive Council meeting on Wednesday morning. The General Body passed the audited statement of accounts for the financial year 2023-24 and also approved the appointment of statutory auditor for the financial year 2024-25. Meanwhile, it's learnt that Iyer's salary has been capped at Rs 13 lakh per month instead of the initially proposed Rs 20 lakh per month, which was the bone of contention between Usha and the majority of the EC members during the long internal feud which ended last month. 'Iyer's salary will now be Rs 13 lakh per month. He has agreed to it,' a source privy to the development told PTI. Iyer's appointment as IOA CEO was announced by Usha in January 2024 but it was ratified only on July 24 this year.
