Kota Kinabalu: Opposition Parti Warisan denied any involvement in organising the controversial Himpunan Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally where a caricature resembling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was burned in public – believed the first such incident in the nation. Warisan said the gathering was entirely organised by the student group Suara Mahasiswa UMS, apparently in response to questions being raised by netizens over a Warisan leader seen in the company of the youths in the viral video. In a statement, Sunday, Warisan Information Chief Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman said it was not involved in any capacity in organising the demonstration and respected the student organisers' position that no political parties be involved in their event. 'The peaceful assembly was fully organised by Suara Mahasiswa UMS and we respect their clear and consistent position that no political party should be involved in their event,' Azis said. To ensure no party representation at the rally, Warisan had instructed members not to wear clothing bearing the party logo if they chose to attend in their personal capacity. Azis said he deployed officers to monitor the event and no Warisan symbols or party materials were displayed during the gathering. Regarding the banner burning incident on the second day of the rally, Azis said there was no involvement from Warisan members in that act and that it was initiated by students themselves.

'I congratulate the students of UMS who were bold enough to stand up against corruption while complying with the legal process in organising the event,' he said, calling for more independent civil society movements to hold those in power accountable. His clarification comes amid speculation about political party involvement in the student-led anti-corruption demonstration. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? What's happening with ‘BMW-class' smart toilets, Ti asks Nga

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 By: Sean Augustin, FMT Text Size: Former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker said housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming owed the public an explanation. PETALING JAYA: Former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker has demanded an update from housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming on the minister's initiative to turn four public toilets into smart toilets. Ti said there had not been any progress report after Nga announced in November that an additional RM4 million had been allocated for the toilets to be built in four locations in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. 'It isn't a paltry sum, which is why the ministry owes the tax-paying public an update,' he said. Ti said the public needed toilets that were clean and functioning. However he questioned the need to spend RM4 million on four toilets at a time when the people were grappling with the increasing cost of living. 'This money could be put into better use by providing low cost housing for the needy. We should not be tone deaf to the plight of the hard-core poor by replacing their needs for shelter with million dollar toilets,' he said. Last year, Nga said funds were allocated to construct two 'BMW-i' or Bersih, Menawan, Wangi (clean, attractive, and fragrant) smart toilets each in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, with such features as built-in automatic bidets, automatic floor-cleaning machines, and automatic doors for people with disabilities. Advertisement Ti said today: 'We don't need no BMW-class toilets. We need functional and easy to maintain toilets instead of high class toilets with higher end maintenance.' He said a recent outcry over a MyKiosk project by Nga's ministry had made it even more urgent for an update on the toilet scheme. In May, Selangor MCA Youth filed a complaint calling for an investigation into the project's funding and execution. In response, Nga dismissed allegations that the initiative was a white elephant. Under the plan, standardised trading spaces will be provided for rent by the B40 group and small traders. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rally: 13 UMS students may be suspended or expelled under Auku

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Thirteen Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students identified in a recent rally may face disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion, under the Universities and University College Act (Amended) 2012 (Auku). UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor said only two students were directly involved in burning a caricature of the Prime Minister, an act the university strongly condemns. He said a disciplinary committee comprising appointed academicians would be formed soon to investigate the matter and determine appropriate action under Auku. The committee will call each student individually to give their explanation regarding the incident that occurred during Sunday's rally. Kasim added that legal advice from the Higher Education Ministry's Legal Advisor will also be sought before any final decision is made. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
