HRD Corp to train 60,000 in Sabah as govt ramps up upskilling for state, says Steven

KOTA KINABALU: The government is ramping up upskilling Sabahans this year, says Steven Sim, starting with HRD Corp's aims to train 60,000 people this year. The Human Resources Minister said this would be a fourfold increase from 15,000 participants in 2024. Speaking at a ministry event with HRD Corp in Pulau Gaya near here, Sim stressed that upskilling Malaysians, especially those in remote areas, is vital for individual empowerment and national development. 'We want every citizen to be equipped with skills that can help them earn a better income. When our people are skilled, the nation progresses too,' he said during the National Training Week (NTW) 2025 event on Sunday (June 1). 'Next week, HRD Corp will launch National Training Week 2025, and we will return to Pulau Gaya to train at least 5,000 residents,' he said. Over 450 residents from Kampung Gaya, Kampung Lok Urai, Kampung Torong Logong, and Kampung Kesuapan participated in the event, attending skills workshops focused on floral entrepreneurship, digital marketing, and dropshipping, alongside motivational talks for students. Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, who also attended, said expanding access to training was key to unlocking employment opportunities and attracting major investments. 'Training like this does not just raise incomes, but also helps transform Sabah's economy and uplift communities,' he said. In line with long-term workforce development, HRD Corp also announced a strategic partnership with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to establish Sabah Human Capital Initiatives and Nurturing Excellence (SHINE), Malaysia's first lifelong learning hub dedicated to research, training, and talent development tailored for Sabah. Deputy HRD Corp chairman Ahsim Jamat expressed hope that the SHINE model will set the standard for human capital development nationwide. The programme also saw the launch of the Industrial and Community Training Collaboration Centre, which included a RM36,000 boost in training equipment support under HRD Corp's Training Equipment and Facility Enhancement Scheme (ALAT) for local tourism industry players. Sim also presented several corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions, including 700 life jackets for daily boat passengers, food baskets for 300 families, and a RM20,000 donation to the parent-teacher associations of SMK and SK Pulau Gaya. Also present were Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, UMS registrar Luqman Ridha Anwar, and Jesselton University College president Professor Dr Chin Yuk Fong.

Enough water supply to UMS at all times: Water Department

Published on: Friday, May 30, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 30, 2025 Text Size: 'If the current pumping system is no longer capable of handling the required volume, the university is encouraged to replace it with higher-capacity or more efficient pumps,' Chee said. Kota Kinabalu: The State Water Department defended its water supply operations to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), insisting that the supply has remained sufficient at all times despite growing complaints from students over prolonged shortages. Its Director Chee Chun Chieh said Tank R13, which supplies water to the UMS campus, has never been empty or dropped below a level that would prevent water from being pumped by the university. 'UMS only requires five million liters of water per day (MLD), and the volume available in Tank R13 is more than adequate to meet this daily demand,' he said in a statement, Thursday. He advised UMS to enhance its pumping operations to ensure consistent water delivery for daily use. 'If the current pumping system is no longer capable of handling the required volume, the university is encouraged to replace it with higher-capacity or more efficient pumps,' Chee said. He noted that it has been informed of ongoing efforts by UMS to address the issue, including the construction of a new water tank and installation of new pumps. Advertisement 'Jans is fully committed to resolving this issue collaboratively and professionally with UMS. 'Our priority is ensuring reliable water access for the campus community and the public,' he said He reiterated its commitment to transparency, technical efficiency and a collaborative approach to ensure that the needs of students, university staff and the broader community are met. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah Water Department defends UMS supply operations amid student outcry

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Water Department has defended its water supply operations to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), insisting that the supply has remained sufficient at all times despite growing complaints from students over prolonged shortages. In a statement on Thursday (May 29), the department said that Tank R13, which supplies water to the university, has never been empty or at a level that would prevent water from being pumped. 'The daily water requirement for UMS is five million litres, and the volume in Tank R13 exceeds that. The issue is not the supply, but internal pumping operations within the university,' the department said. They advised UMS to improve its water pumping capacity and, if current equipment is inadequate, to replace it with higher-capacity or more efficient pumps. The department also confirmed it had been informed of UMS' plans to construct a new tank and install new pumps to resolve the matter. The clarification follows criticism from Suara Mahasiswa, a UMS student group, which claimed that campus life has been severely affected by ongoing water disruptions. The issue gained further attention when a Sarawakian student studying at UMS penned an open letter to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, appealing for his intervention. In the letter, the student expressed concern for the welfare of fellow Sarawakian students, describing the situation as 'embarrassing' and 'unacceptable.' Abang Johari acknowledged the letter and, while noting that the matter fell outside his jurisdiction, said he would refer the issue to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir for his attention and action. Sabah Water reiterated its commitment to transparency, technical efficiency, and professional cooperation with UMS in the interest of students, staff and the wider community. Meanwhile, Sabah Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said the state government was working closely with both the water department and UMS to find a resolution. Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said the supply from the department remains inconsistent, while the tube well system on campus was unable to meet UMS's daily demand of five million litres. 'I have appealed to the Chief Minister to prioritise UMS in the water distribution schedule,' he said.
