Kota Kinabalu: The State Government continues to strengthen its commitment to higher education through various targeted initiatives, including the largest allocation to date — RM136 million — for the Sabah State Government Scholarships (BKNS) this year. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said the significant increase from RM50 million in 2020 reflects the government's determination to ensure access to higher education is available to all Sabahans, regardless of their socio-economic background.
Advertisement 'This is a long-term investment by the government to develop a high-quality and competitive human capital. 'We do not want Sabah's youth to be left behind in education simply due to financial constraints,' he said during presentation ceremony for Sabah-Based Higher Education Students Aid Contribution (Sentosa) at the Chancellor Hall, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), on Sunday. His speech was delivered by State Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin bin Datuk Mohd Arif. Hajiji said 4,170 students would benefit from BKNS sponsorships this year, in line with the goals of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development policy to strengthen the education sector as a pillar of the state's progress. Hajiji who is also UMS Pro-Chancellor said that this year alone, the State Government has allocated RM77.5 million to implement 13 education aid initiatives, benefiting schools, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), students from institutions of higher learning, as well as Sabah student associations both locally and abroad. He added that key initiatives include the one-off IPT Registration Cash Aid (BUDI), the Computer Assistance Program (BAIK), the Sabah Malaysian Student Secretariat (SEMESTA), and the Sabah Student Flight Ticket Assistance (GRS-SUBFLY). He said Yayasan Sabah has also played a significant role in educational development, allocating RM67.17 million last year, which benefited 3,234 students. Through the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (Muis) RM92.4 million was disbursed over the past five years via the Zakat and Fitrah Division, helping more than 48,000 students across the State. To ensure continued education support, the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS), introduced in June 2022, has benefited nearly 10,104 recipients with a total expenditure of RM15.8 million to date. He said the Sentosa assistance program, launched in March at the Gaya Campus of the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), involves a RM6 million allocation and targets approximately 20,000 Bumiputera Sabah students within the State. 'This assistance aims to ease students' financial burden, especially for basic necessities or returning home. It also reflects the government's strong commitment to ensuring no student is left behind in their educational journey,' he said. At the event, Hajiji handed out a one-time cash aid of RM300 per student under the Sentosa program to over 600 students, including 319 from UMS and 323 from Mahsa College Sabah, who had not previously received the aid. 'I hope the students will fully utilize the assistance provided and continue striving for excellence in their respective fields, for the future of the state and the nation,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Hajiji expected to announce Gagasan Rakyat's direction for state polls tomorrow
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor is expected to make a "major' announcement tomorrow on the future direction of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) for the 17th Sabah state election. The announcement is believed to be related to a key motion addressing the party's readiness to face the polls, which is expected to be tabled during Gagasan Rakyat's Annual General Assembly. Hajiji, who is also the party president, is scheduled to launch the assembly. "Yes, just wait for my speech this Sunday," he said when met after launching the Gagasan Rakyat Information Seminar in conjunction with the party's Annual General Assembly at the Sabah International Convention Centre here yesterday. Also present were Gagasan Rakyat deputy president Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and information chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. Hajiji was asked about the possibility of a major motion related to Gagasan Rakyat's direction ahead of the state polls being decided during the assembly, which begins today with wing-level meetings. Previously, Gagasan Rakyat's partners in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition voiced support for the local-based coalition to contest the state election independently. Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR), both GRS component parties, expressed their support for GRS to go solo during their recent joint convention. Hajiji, however, has remained tight-lipped on the matter, saying only that discussions between GRS and Pakatan Harapan (PH) will be decided soon. He had earlier mentioned the possible dissolution of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly to pave the way for state polls, with the announcement potentially being made during his speech on Sunday. On yesterday's seminar, Hajiji said it was a gathering of information chiefs from all divisions and party levels. "We are mobilising our machinery to explain the party's struggle and what the current government has achieved. This must be conveyed to the people," he said. Hajiji said the seminar aimed to ensure Gagasan Rakyat leaders at all levels intensify their preparations ahead of the state polls.

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister cum Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) President Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor called on the party's information machinery to step up efforts to explain the party's struggles and achievements of the current State Government to the people. 'Today, we begin the session by meeting with the party's information chiefs from every division at all levels,' he said, when officiating 'Gasak 17: This Is the Time' organised by Gagasan Rakyat at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Friday, the first day of the three-day Gagasan Rakyat annual assembly. 'We asked them to activate all party machinery at every level. Let's mobilise our team to explain about the party's mission and what the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-led (GRS) State Government has delivered so far. 'These must be communicated clearly to the public,' stressed Hajiji, who is also Chairman of GRS, after the closed-door seminar. He also underlined the important role of the party's Women, Youth and Beliawanis wings in ensuring the party's messages and information reach to all segments of society throughout Sabah. According to Hajiji, strong cooperation between the party's grassroots information machinery and the top leadership is essential to further strengthen public support for Gagasan Rakyat and the State's ruling coalition. The seminar was attended by 400 information chiefs and committee members from 74 Gagasan Rakyat divisions across the State. The seminar aimed to align the party's communication strategy and empower its information machinery to address current political challenges ahead of the upcoming State election. Hajiji is confident that with a well-organised and committed information team, Gagasan Rakyat would continue to strengthen its position in Sabah and provide the best service to the people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Gagasan Rakyat's direction in polls to be known this weekend
KOTA KINABALU: The direction for Sabah's top ruling party in the state polls this year – whether it will go solo or work with Sabah Pakatan Harapan – is expected to be set this weekend by its president Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) chief is also expected to indicate the likely dates for the dissolution of the state assembly, which could be in August or closer to the full term in October. In his past statements, Hajiji has advocated for Gagasan Rakyat and the Sabah coalition it leads (GRS) to work with Sabah Pakatan. But his GRS partners want the coalition to go it alone in the polls. "Just wait for my speech this Sunday," Hajiji told reporters here, referring to Gagasan Rakyat's AGM tomorrow, which is expected to be attended by over 2,000 delegates from 74 divisions from Sabah and Labuan. The AGM will be closely watched by Gagasan Rakyat's partners, Sabah STAR led by Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) led by Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee and Usno. Sabah STAR, SAPP and Usno are pushing for the coalition to go solo amid growing calls for Sabah to regain its autonomous political rights through local parties. Hajiji has hinted that he prefers an electoral pact with Sabah Pakatan but that GRS be given a dominant role. Another GRS partner, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS,) is also agreeable to Hajiji's idea to retain dominance. The Gagasan Rakyat's gathering begins today with the Youth, Wanita and beliawanis annual meetings, where they are expected to state their stand on whether the party works with others. The wings are also expected to push for more younger leaders to be fielded as candidates. Yesterday, Hajiji launched the party's closed-door Gasak17 Information seminar at the Sabah International Convention Centre here. He asked the information chiefs from all divisions to activate their machinery to explain party objectives, the state government's achievements and to also address current political issues.
