Kota Kinabalu: The State Government continues to strengthen its commitment to higher education through various targeted initiatives, including the largest allocation to date — RM136 million — for the Sabah State Government Scholarships (BKNS) this year. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said the significant increase from RM50 million in 2020 reflects the government's determination to ensure access to higher education is available to all Sabahans, regardless of their socio-economic background.
Advertisement 'This is a long-term investment by the government to develop a high-quality and competitive human capital. 'We do not want Sabah's youth to be left behind in education simply due to financial constraints,' he said during presentation ceremony for Sabah-Based Higher Education Students Aid Contribution (Sentosa) at the Chancellor Hall, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), on Sunday. His speech was delivered by State Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin bin Datuk Mohd Arif. Hajiji said 4,170 students would benefit from BKNS sponsorships this year, in line with the goals of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development policy to strengthen the education sector as a pillar of the state's progress. Hajiji who is also UMS Pro-Chancellor said that this year alone, the State Government has allocated RM77.5 million to implement 13 education aid initiatives, benefiting schools, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), students from institutions of higher learning, as well as Sabah student associations both locally and abroad. He added that key initiatives include the one-off IPT Registration Cash Aid (BUDI), the Computer Assistance Program (BAIK), the Sabah Malaysian Student Secretariat (SEMESTA), and the Sabah Student Flight Ticket Assistance (GRS-SUBFLY). He said Yayasan Sabah has also played a significant role in educational development, allocating RM67.17 million last year, which benefited 3,234 students. Through the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (Muis) RM92.4 million was disbursed over the past five years via the Zakat and Fitrah Division, helping more than 48,000 students across the State. To ensure continued education support, the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS), introduced in June 2022, has benefited nearly 10,104 recipients with a total expenditure of RM15.8 million to date. He said the Sentosa assistance program, launched in March at the Gaya Campus of the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), involves a RM6 million allocation and targets approximately 20,000 Bumiputera Sabah students within the State. 'This assistance aims to ease students' financial burden, especially for basic necessities or returning home. It also reflects the government's strong commitment to ensuring no student is left behind in their educational journey,' he said. At the event, Hajiji handed out a one-time cash aid of RM300 per student under the Sentosa program to over 600 students, including 319 from UMS and 323 from Mahsa College Sabah, who had not previously received the aid. 'I hope the students will fully utilize the assistance provided and continue striving for excellence in their respective fields, for the future of the state and the nation,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Preserving habitat around mantanani
Published on: Saturday, July 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: Dr Kasim (3rd left) and Johnny (2nd right) showing the signed MoU documents while two researchers and another look on in the event at UMS, recently. Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and a Sabah-based JSK Mantanani Island Resorts Sdn. Bhd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate in marine biodiversity research, education in and around Mantanani Islands, off Kota Belud. The partnership marks a significant milestone in a journey that began in 2023, when the company took bold steps to address the ongoing poaching of nesting sea turtles on the island. Driven by concern over declining turtle numbers, the company sought technical guidance from UMS through its Borneo Marine Research Institute (IPMB) for an integrated conservation programme. Managing Director Datuk Johnny Wong Chen Yee said the company island resort is not just about providing a memorable escape but deeply rooted in sustainable tourism and responsible stewardship of the environment. He said Mantanani, a jewel in the crown of Sabah's Marine biodiversity is one of Malaysia's most breath-taking natural treasures. 'However, as we all know, these precious ecosystems are facing unprecedented challenges — Climate change, unsustainable practices and pollution. 'We must actively participate in their preservation and restoration. 'Through this partnership, JSK Mantanani Island Resort and UMS will embark on a collaborative journey focused on two critical areas: Marine Life and Habitat Restoration,' he said at the signing. Johnny represented JSK Mantanani Island Resort Sdn Bhd while UMS Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor for UMS at Chancellory building recently. Johnny said as Sabah continues to position itself as a global eco-tourism hub, such partnership is vital in ensuring marine biodiversity thrives in tandem with responsible development. The collaborative initiatives will encompass a range of vital activities, including: Seagrass restoration: Rejuvenating these crucial underwater meadows that serve as nurseries for countless species and act as significant carbon sinks. Sea turtle conservation: Protecting these magnificent creatures through monitoring nesting sites, rescuing injured turtles, and raising awareness about their plight. Coral reef rehabilitation: Working together to propagate and transplant corals, restoring the vibrant underwater gardens that are vital to marine life. Research and monitoring of marine biodiversity: Understanding the health of our marine ecosystems to inform effective conservation strategies. Community engagement: Empowering local communities with the knowledge and tools to become stewards of their own environment. Educational programs for their guests and the public: Raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation and inspiring action. 'We will soon launch a dedicated Wildlife Gallery at the resort, exhibiting educational specimens provided by the Sabah Wildlife Department. 'We are also proud to share that our turtle hatchery centre can hold up to 1,000 eggs – a vital step in protecting and increasing the local turtle population,' he said. Johnny said with support and advice from UMS marine scientists, his company obtained formal approval from the Sabah Wildlife Department to launch a turtle conservation initiative He said several JSK staff members were trained and appointed as Honorary Wildlife Rangers, enabling legal authorities to monitor beaches, relocate turtle nests, and manage the JSK Turtle Hatchery. 'This initiative bore fruit quickly, where two green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nests have been protected to date, achieving a hatching success rate of over 90 per cent. 'Protecting Mantanani's natural heritage is core to our values. With UMS as our scientific partner, we can ensure that our efforts are effective, sustainable, and backed by solid data,' he said. Prof. Datuk Dr Kasim said the partnership is more than conservation, it's about building a resilient, informed, and science-driven approach to marine stewardship. 'We're proud to support JSK in becoming a model for private sector-driven conservation,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Hajiji expected to announce Gagasan Rakyat's direction for state polls tomorrow
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor is expected to make a "major' announcement tomorrow on the future direction of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) for the 17th Sabah state election. The announcement is believed to be related to a key motion addressing the party's readiness to face the polls, which is expected to be tabled during Gagasan Rakyat's Annual General Assembly. Hajiji, who is also the party president, is scheduled to launch the assembly. "Yes, just wait for my speech this Sunday," he said when met after launching the Gagasan Rakyat Information Seminar in conjunction with the party's Annual General Assembly at the Sabah International Convention Centre here yesterday. Also present were Gagasan Rakyat deputy president Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and information chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. Hajiji was asked about the possibility of a major motion related to Gagasan Rakyat's direction ahead of the state polls being decided during the assembly, which begins today with wing-level meetings. Previously, Gagasan Rakyat's partners in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition voiced support for the local-based coalition to contest the state election independently. Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR), both GRS component parties, expressed their support for GRS to go solo during their recent joint convention. Hajiji, however, has remained tight-lipped on the matter, saying only that discussions between GRS and Pakatan Harapan (PH) will be decided soon. He had earlier mentioned the possible dissolution of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly to pave the way for state polls, with the announcement potentially being made during his speech on Sunday. On yesterday's seminar, Hajiji said it was a gathering of information chiefs from all divisions and party levels. "We are mobilising our machinery to explain the party's struggle and what the current government has achieved. This must be conveyed to the people," he said. Hajiji said the seminar aimed to ensure Gagasan Rakyat leaders at all levels intensify their preparations ahead of the state polls.
