Sabah allocates RM136mil in scholarships this year
'I hope students will make good use of whatever funding they receive from the government and work hard to achieve academic excellence and to excel in their respective fields of study,' he said in his speech, which Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Arif read.
His speech was delivered during the aid distribution for local university students under the Sentosa initiative at a ceremony held at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) near here on Sunday (July 20).
He said 4,170 students are expected to benefit from the Sabah State Government Scholarship (BKNS) this year.
At the event, RM300 one-off aid was given to 600 students, including 319 from UMS and 323 from the Sabah Mahsa College.
Hajiji, who is UMS pro-chancellor, said this year, the state government had allocated RM77.5mil to implement 13 education-related initiatives.

KOTA BHARU: The government is open to accepting applications for new, urgent projects from Kelantan, despite allocation for major projects has been listed in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said compared to before, engagement sessions have been simplified by taking into account input from the state government. "Every time we visit a state, there is a special session that gives the state government an opportunity to provide input, in addition to monitoring ongoing projects. "Sometimes, projects we announce have a large budget, but their implementation is stalled, which is why we continue these discussions with the aim of more effective implementation," he said. On the Kelantan 2025 Madani Rakyat Program, Anwar said it was the best opportunity for the government to get closer and convey information directly to the people. "Hopefully, through this, the government close in on issues of the people and elevate programs that needed attention," he said. The Kelantan 2025 Madani Rakyat Program, led by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, was a three-day event that began last Thursday (Aug 7). Expanding nuclear tech awareness in rural areas
TUMPAT: Efforts are being stepped up to raise awareness and understanding of nuclear technology among rural communities, including in Orang Asli settlements, to ensure no one is left behind in the country's technological development. Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohamad Yusof Apdal said this was crucial, as nuclear technology is still often misunderstood and feared, with many associating it solely with weapons. In reality, he said, nuclear technology holds vast potential in sectors such as energy, healthcare and agriculture. 'When people hear the word 'nuclear', they often link it to weapons, but in fact, this technology can benefit rural communities, including the Orang Asli by serving as an energy source or a catalyst for economic development,' he added. Mohamad Yusof was speaking after closing a nuclear technology satellite programme at Jeti Kasih in Kampung Pasir Pekan Tengah here yesterday, Bernama reported. He said the programme's theme, 'Teknologi Nuklear Santuni Kasih Rakyat', reflected the aspirations of Malaysia Madani, sending a clear message that nuclear technology should no longer be seen as exclusive to certain groups, but accessible and beneficial to all. 'The Malaysian Nuclear Agency has developed various nuclear technology-based products and services that are safe, high-impact and beneficial to the public, including in the fields of medicine, agriculture, industry and the environment.'

Tuhau and wild fungi workshop empowers Imbak communities

TONGOD (Aug 8): The Tuhau (Wild Ginger) and Wild Fungi Workshop under the Bioprospect Project and Development of Wild Fungi, Wild Ginger and Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (TUB) Project (12th Malaysia Plan), held from August 1 to 7 at the Imbak Canyon Conservation Area (ICCA), successfully gathered 86 participants from villages around Imbak Canyon and relevant government agencies to strengthen their knowledge on the biodiversity potential of wild ginger and mushrooms in Sabah. The closing ceremony of the workshop was officiated by the Group Manager of the Yayasan Sabah Group's Research Division cum Project Manager of the Bio-Prospecting Research and Development Project on Wild Mushrooms and Wild Ginger (TUB), representing the director of Yayasan Sabah. Also in attendance were officers from the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and Yayasan Sabah Group. The TUB Project, with an allocation of RM5 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan (2021–2025), is a strategic initiative aimed at identifying, protecting, and harnessing the potential of wild ginger and mushroom species in Sabah, contributing to economic development and national food security. The workshop featured presentations, demonstrations, and specimen exhibitions conducted by TS. Dr Elia Godoong (wild ginger research specialist) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jaya Seelan A/L Sathiya Seelan (wild mushroom research specialist) from UMS. In her speech, Dr Yap emphasised that the TUB Project is aligned with the Malaysian Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 8 (Decent Work & Economic Growth), and 15 (Life on Land). 'The strong commitment and close collaboration between Yayasan Sabah Group, SFD, and UMS are proof of the dedication to ensuring that the research outcomes deliver positive impacts on biodiversity and local communities. 'The Yayasan Sabah Group greatly appreciates the support from SFD and UMS for the close cooperation given throughout these five years,' she concluded. During the closing ceremony, 13 community leaders received participation certificates in recognition of their active involvement in the workshop.
