The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides the death penalty or imprisonment for not less than 30 years but not more than 40 years and, if not sentenced to death, will be subject to not less than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
No bail was allowed, and the court set Oct 17 for mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Nik Nur 'Aqilah Syarfa Nik Zaidi appeared for the prosecution, while Zulazren was unrepresented.
Meanwhile, in another case, magistrate Nurul Saqinah sentenced Mohd Khairol Mohd Abu, 40, to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to his wife.

SEPANG: An English teacher was charged at a Sepang Magistrate's Court on Thursday (Aug 21) with making a statement likely to cause public alarm over the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir, Sinar Harian reports. The accused, Siti Hajar Aflah Shaharuddin, however, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani after the charge was read during the proceedings on Thursday morning, the Malay language daily reported. According to the charge, Siti Hajar, 39, was accused of making a statement that could cause public alarm and incite someone to commit an offence against public tranquility via the TikTok account SHA_Abrienda. The offence was allegedly committed by the English teacher, who works at a secondary school in Rawang, Selangor, at 1:20pm on Aug 6, where the statement was seen by a police officer at KL International Airport (KLIA). Lawyer Mohamad Zaiful Bahrin Kamde requested that the court grant a minimal bail, considering his client had cooperated well with the authorities throughout the investigation. "During the investigation, the accused voluntarily surrendered to the police and was not remanded. Clearly, the accused is not a flight risk. "The accused is a single mother of three school-going children aged 12, 11, and 10, and also supports her parents," he said. High Court gives the nod for Na'imah to refer constitutional questions to apex court
KUALA LUMPUR: Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid is one step closer in her bid to refer eight questions to the Federal Court regarding the validity of the charges she is facing. Justice K. Muniandy, in his decision Thursday (Aug 21), said that Na'imah's case contained constitutional issues that requires the Federal Court's intervention. "In fact, there is a clear and compelling constitutional issue to be resolved by the apex court," he said. He said the questions raised were not frivolous or an abuse of court process, as the Sessions Court had suggested, but rather represented a genuine and important challenge to a piece of legislation. "The outcome of this case will have a profound impact on the rights of the individuals called as witnesses, including the applicant, in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigations and further define the limit of state power under the supreme law of the Federal Constitution," he said here on Thursday. The court then allowed Na'imah's revision application and ordered for the matter to be transmitted to the Sessions Court for the lower court to transmit it back to the High Court. On Jan 23, 2024, Na'imah was charged with failure to comply with a notice to declare her assets, which included Menara Ilham and several other properties in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
