Jim Goodwin: Fourth and Europe a really successful season for Dundee United

Rhyl Journal18-05-2025
The Terrors, who returned to the William Hill Premiership this season, had lost their four post-split matches going into the final fixture against the Dons, who were two points ahead and looking in fine fettle when Danish attacker Jeppe Okkels scored after 15 minutes.
However, United levelled after 56 minutes through defender Declan Gallagher before loan striker Sam Dalby's penalty in the 62nd minute secured United fourth, which brings a potential Europe League qualifying place, although Aberdeen are able to swipe it back if they win the Scottish Cup against Celtic next week.
Goodwin said: 'Today's performance just pretty much summed up what this group have been all about all season.
'Numerous times throughout the campaign we've come from behind to win games and draw games. We've scored late winners throughout the course of the season.
'Today, the character was called into question again. At half-time, we were trailing and I thought the players were outstanding. They never stopped believing.
'It's our third game in seven days. We're down to the bare bones, as you can see, with the bench six substitutes, so not a great deal of options in terms of trying to change things up and get some fresh legs on there.
'I just think it's a fantastic way to finish off what's been a really successful season for the club.
'People have questioned our character and questioned the players about being on holiday too early and about downing tools. I think today's performance showed that was never the case.'
Aberdeen, who had a place in Europe secured going into the game, have lost four games in row going into next week's final against the Hoops but manager Jimmy Thelin is confident that his side will be ready.
He said: 'It's the last game of the season, it's a huge game. We have been involved in a lot this season and done really well, but it was not enough. We were close to a better position.
'We are in a final so every game that has been available for us to play, we've played. This last punch, I can't imagine this will be a problem for anyone, because not everyone can play in the Scottish Cup final.
'It doesn't happen every year. I can't see that anyone will have problems to get the spirit or bravery to play this game.
'We know what people think, but it's for us to win everything and try to do that. We can't be afraid of this game, and have to do much better as a team to win this game.'

Ruben Amorim fires back at Altay Bayindir criticism

Manchester United suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal in their Premier League opener. Arsenal's winning goal was scored by Riccardo Calafiori in the 13th minute, following a corner where Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir fumbled the ball under pressure. United manager Ruben Amorim defended Bayindir, stating that the contact from Arsenal's William Saliba was allowed and his team needs to learn to apply similar pressure. Amorim rejected criticism of the Turkey international when asked if he had considered starting third-choice Tom Heaton and added he was happy with his three main goalkeepers. Despite the loss, Amorim praised his team's overall performance, noting they were the better side with 22 shots on goal but could not beat Arsenal's goalkeeper David Raya.

Ruben Amorim tells Mikel Arteta 'we were the better team' as Man Utd halted by Arsenal

Ruben Amorim saw his Manchester United side beaten at home by Arsenal in their opening Premier League game but was adamant that they were better than the Gunners Ruben Amorim insists Manchester United"deserved more" after their loss against Arsenal and were "the better team" despite coming out on the wrong end of the result on the opening weekend. ‌ The Gunners rocked up at Old Trafford and left with all three points thanks to Riccardo Calafiori's first-half header. United couldn't find an equaliser as they showcased their summer signings, who helped them produced a marked improvement on last year's showings. ‌ Patrick Dorgu hit the post whilst new arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo both looked lively in the final third, albeit their efforts didn't result in United gaining a share of the spoils. Amorim is under pressure to improve results and performances in his first full year. ‌ He was full of praise for his players after they had more than 60 percent of possession and also recorded 22 shots on goals - adamant that they were better than Arsenal as they stuck to their guns. Amorim told Match of the Day: "We deserved more and we were the better team, that is clear but in the end we lost. We need to work on the things we need to improve. We need to defend set pieces. We did a lot things right. "There are a lot of things without seeing the video that we need to work. I am really proud of my players. We were more aggressive and brave. In certain moments I think Bryan [Mbeumo] and Cunha helped a lot. We stuck to the plan even when the stadium is nervous, we continued to play the way we played and that will help us in the future. "They [the fans] want that feeling again. We go to Old Trafford and we are not going to get bored. We need to win more than last season but they want to see something and feel something." United's display on Sunday was the first time in 14 years that they'd recorded more than 20 shots in a Premier League game. Ironically the last time that happened they beat Arsenal 8-2 under Sir Alex Ferguson, but on this occasion their efforts failed to see them score once. Mikel Arteta, seeking to end a run of three straight second place finishes, praised his team's ability to dig in and claim a vital early three points. He said: "The team has to find that resilience throughout the season for ten months in different contexts to be able to do that. Of course, we have to improve a lot of things and that will happen very soon." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Monday's briefing: Arsenal edge first win after Chelsea strikeforce fires blanks

There were signs of hope for Ruben Amorim's side despite the result, while elsewhere Nottingham Forest made a fine start to the season and Chelsea played out a stalemate with Crystal Palace. Altay Bayindir's blunder handed Arsenal victory and undid a positive Manchester United performance in Sunday's pulsating Premier League encounter. Old Trafford rocked as Mikel Arteta's runners-up headed to the rebuilding Red Devils in the most eye-catching fixture of the opening weekend. United looked far better than the side that finished 15th last season – their worst top-flight campaign since 1974 – yet Amorim's men fell to another loss as Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on Bayindir's early flap. United are a work in progress but summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo looked sharp on their debuts, while Patrick Dorgu hit a post in the first half. Arsenal keeper David Raya also produced a string of important stops to keep the hosts at bay. Bayindir's difficult moment again put the spotlight on United's goalkeeping situation. The Turk was given the nod to start the game with Andre Onana still working his way back from injury. Bayindir failed to deal with a corner, allowing Calafiori to nod in, but Amorim, felt his keeper was put in a very difficult situation. 'You're allowed to do a lot of things in the corner, we need to do the same,' he said. 'When you touch that way the goalkeeper, he needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players, or he chooses to push players and let the ball past.' Last season Bayindir conceded directly from a Son Heung-min corner in a 4-3 Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham, but Amorim rejected criticism of the keeper, saying: 'He suffered a goal like this where? Against Tottenham? It was without VAR. With VAR it was a foul. 'Then in the next game against Arsenal, who saved the penalty? Who saved the game? You don't remember the game but I remember the game and Altay was unbelievable in that game. I am happy with the three goalkeepers.' Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner said Eberechi Eze will play for as long as he remains at the club and urged fans not to believe 'rumours' the England international is about to be sold. Amid reports of an imminent move, Eze was a surprise inclusion as Palace began their Premier League campaign with a goalless draw against a lacklustre Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He looked to have delivered a potential parting gift to supporters with a brilliant first-half free-kick before VAR intervened controversially to disallow the goal. Palace have had talks with Tottenham over Eze and Arsenal are also reported to be keen to sign the midfielder. 'As much as I know, Eze has a contract with Crystal Palace, he's a Crystal Palace player and he showed it today,' said Glasner. 'As long as he is a Palace player and performs like this, he will play for us. Nobody has told me something else.' Nottingham Forest made a mockery of Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-match worries as they beat Brentford 3-1 in their opening game of the season. Nuno expressed his 'concern' for the campaign ahead of the match, citing a lack of options in his squad, but he will feel better after a rampant display at the City Ground. After new signings Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were unveiled before kick-off, their new team-mates put on a show as Chris Wood's double and a debut goal for Dan Ndoye put them 3-0 up at the break. It was the start that new Brentford boss Keith Andrews would have dreaded. With Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard sold over the summer and Yoane Wissa effectively on strike trying to force a move away, Andrews has not been handed the easiest of tasks in his first managerial role. Igor Thiago got the Bees on the scoresheet with a second-half penalty, but life after Thomas Frank began poorly. Jacob Ramsey is a Mag! 🙌 — Newcastle United (@NUFC) August 17, 2025 Newcastle completed the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey. The 24-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the Magpies, who are understood to have paid an initial £39million for his services, with a further £4m due in add-ons. The Villa academy graduate, who made 167 appearances for the club, 10 of them in last season's Champions League, is head coach Eddie Howe's fourth acquisition of a difficult summer. Ramsey said: 'I'm delighted to be here. It's been a mad two or three days, but I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started.' 'Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad,' added Toon boss Eddie How. 'His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt.' Leeds mark their return to the Premier League on Monday night when they host Everton in the final match of the opening round. Daniel Farke's side will hope to use the Elland Road crowd to make it a difficult night for Everton, who could have new loan signing Jack Grealish in the squad. Facing the Toffees, meanwhile, could be forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who spent nine years on Merseyside before departing at the end of his contract earlier this summer.
