MUMBAI: The rupee closed at 85.71 against the dollar, down from 84.83 on Wednesday - its worst day since Feb 2023. The currency hit a low of 85.76 during the day, falling more than a rupee from the day's high.

The rupee rose at the start of the session and remained steady until early afternoon. However, around 2:30pm, sentiment changed following govt's announcement that Pakistan targeted several military locations in the northern and western regions, which were neutralised by India. Dealers said this was seen as an escalation of the conflict. Equity markets, which were in the green until then, also saw a sharp fall after the statement.
Some dealers are forecasting that the rupee could breach the 86 level if tensions continue.
"Importers delayed buying dollars, anticipating the rupee would strengthen further. However, after govt confirmed that multiple locations were targeted by Pakistan and that India responded, the situation was seen as an escalation, prompting importers and corporates with ECB obligations to hedge their positions. This led to increased demand for dollars, putting pressure on the rupee," said K N Dey, a forex consultant who advises corporates.
Dollar-rupee forward premiums also jumped, with the one-year implied yield rising 16 basis points (100bps = 1 percentage point) to a near one-month high of 2.34%. "Historically, the rupee weakened during periods of geopolitical tension, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, when India faced indirect economic impacts. Now, with India directly involved in the current conflict, the rupee faces heightened risk, and further escalation could significantly increase pressure on the currency," said Dey.

Dealers said the escalation of conflict could hurt capital flows if foreign investors turn cautious. The resulting weakening of the rupee would also affect other flows waiting for the currency to stabilise. Part of the dollar's gains on Thursday were also due to a rebound in the greenback. The dollar index, which measures the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.46% higher at 100.07.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 1% to $61.76 per barrel in futures trade.
However, given that similar conflicts in the past have not escalated, dealers believe the impact may be temporary. Internationally, the dollar declined sharply in March and April 2025, reflecting reduced investor confidence due to economic policy uncertainty and the impact of new tariffs.

Tripunithura bus terminal project awaits govt approval for land pooling process

Kochi: Tripunithura bus terminal plan, which is part of the proposed integrated transit hub project, is awaiting govt nod to proceed with land pooling process. Earlier, Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) and the municipality jointly decided to implement bus terminal project near Tripunithura Metro station through land pooling, as land acquisition in the region would escalate project cost. Months ago, GCDA informed state govt that the authority was ready to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the municipality. However, govt is yet to grant approval to proceed with the project. "We are planning to implement it as the first project with land pooling in the state. But we cannot start the process of DPR preparation without govt nod for land pooling process. Govt has to inform the decision regarding this to the municipality," said a GCDA official. The project, aimed at transforming the royal town of Tripunithura into a transit hub interconnecting Metro station, Tripunithura railway station and the proposed bus terminal, faced a major crisis due to lack of funds for land acquisition. Decision of GCDA and municipality to revive the project through land pooling rekindled fresh hopes regarding the project. Earlier, municipality announced that it would lay foundation stone for the project before June 2024. However, authorities failed to even begin the process of land acquisition or demarcation of land identified for the project.

Indian oil & gas sector to witness strong growth despite global volatility

New Delhi: The Indian oil and gas sector is likely to see strong growth through the fiscal year 2026 and 2027, despite significant volatility faced by the oil and gas market last month, said a research note by Systematix Institutional Equities. India's oil & gas sector covered companies are likely to deliver average sales, EBITDA, and PAT growth of 6 per cent, 12.9 per cent, and 13.3 per cent year-on-year for FY26E, and 7.8 per cent, 9 per cent, and 10.1 per cent year-on-year for FY27E, respectively. Systematix suggests that top investment picks include Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), GAIL India Ltd (GAIL), Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL), and Gulf Oil Lubricants India Ltd (GOLI). According to the research, the market suffered from significant volatility with declining crude prices countered by a robust rebound in refining margins. Last month, Brent crude prices fell by 22.9 per cent year-on-year and 3.8 per cent month-on-month in May 2025, influenced by increased OPEC supply from nations like Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Additionally, Global liquid demand also saw a sharp drop before a slight recovery. The lower crude prices contributed to a decline in US rig counts, reflecting cautious upstream investment. Contrary to this, the benchmark Gross Refining Margin (GRM) of companies surged by 85 per cent month-on-month and 121 per cent year-on-year, averaging $6.4/bbl. This significant improvement stemmed from lower crude input costs and enhanced product cracks across gasoline, gasoil, jet, kero, and naphtha segments, all showing strong month-on-month improvements. Furthermore, Natural gas prices presented mixed trends. Henry Hub prices in the US corrected sharply by 31.8 per cent since January 2025 due to oversupply and mild weather. Conversely, Asian spot LNG (Japan Korea Marker) prices rose 6.7 per cent year-on-year to $11.9/mmbtu, driven by regional demand. In the fourth quarter of FY25, the aggregate earnings for the oil and gas sector saw a slight year-on-year decline but a sequential increase, with gas and City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies generally reporting revenues above estimates. While EBITDA/scm for CGD companies declined year-on-year, they showed sequential rebounds driven by price hikes and favourable gas price mix.
