Memorial Day ceremonies in the Upstate: What to know
(WSPA) – Gatherings are happening all across the South Carolina, and Western North Carolina, to honor those who died while serving in the United States military.
Simpsonville Memorial Day Ceremony – Sergeant John Salinas of the S.C. State Guard will talk about the restrictions that have lifted, allowing more veterans to give back through blood donations.
May 26 at 11 a.m., hosted at the Simpsonville Arts Center, 110 Academy Street, in Simpsonville.
City of Mauldin, Memorial Day Ceremony – The City of Mauldin will host a ceremony, offering community members to pay their respects to fallen service members.
May 26 at 11 a.m. until noon, hosted at the Mauldin Veterans Memorial, 101 East Butler Road, in Mauldin.
Pendleton Memorial Day Ceremony – The Pendleton American Legion Post 113 will host a ceremony to honor fallen heroes.
May 26 at 10 a.m., hosted at the Pendleton Veterans Park, 500 Lebanon Road, in Pendleton.
Asheville Memorial Day Ceremony – A tribute to honor the fallen heroes. Secretary of the N.C. Department of Military & Veterans Affairs, Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette, will be the speaker and will feature readings from the Brothers and Sisters Like These, writing group.
May 26 at 10 a.m., hosted at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 962 W Old US Highway 70, in Black Mountain.
Lake Lure Memorial Day Program – Featuring Colonel of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Brad A. Morgan, lead for Western N.C. Storm Recovery Mission
May 26 at 9 a.m., hosted at the Roosevelt Hall at 2771 Memorial Highway, in Lake Lure.

Greenville mayor talks 10-story ‘Honor Tower' construction in Unity Park
GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – Construction continues on a 10-story tower Greenville city leaders said will honor those who serve while bringing the community together. Greenville mayor Knox White told 7NEWS he envisions the Honor Tower in Unity Park as a gathering place for ceremonies honoring veterans and first responders. 'After Hurricane Helene and everything else we've all been through, I think we understand even better than ever before how important our first responders are, and it's a great way to honor them,' White said. White said the 10-story Thomas and Vivian Wong Honor Tower not only pays homage to men and women in uniform, but also highlights the unique history of the surrounding neighborhood. 'Unity Park has a very compelling story behind it. It was the site of a segregated park system, a black park and a white park,' White also said. The base of the tower features a plaza city leaders said can hold 200 people. White added visitors will be able to walk or take an elevator to the 10th floor for a small fee. 'It'll be one of the iconic features of our city. Just like the Liberty Bridge, we used a world renown architect and designer for the honor tower, Paul Endres, he's done great work,' White explained. White said the tower is a result of around $10 million in private and public partnerships. The aim is to boost appreciation for the communities and cultures that call Greenville home, according to White. 'It's really meant to be experienced on the outside as well as on top. A beautiful view on top, but it's a beautiful piece of art, and architecture that'll be a real crowning achievement for Unity Park,' White went on to say. Summer program gives free meals to South Carolina students
SOUTH CAROLINA (WSPA) — Students across the state will have access to free meals throughout the summer, thanks to the Summer Break Café and the Seamless Summer Option programs. The programs, according to the South Carolina Department of Education, is a federally-funded effort to ensure that low-income children can receive meals and snacks during the summer break. 'Summer meals are one of the most vital ways we support South Carolina students year-round,' said State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver. Greenville Co. Schools offering free breakfast, lunch to children this summer The programs run from June to August and is being offered at multiple sites throughout the Upstate. More than 1,200 sites, including schools, libraries, parks, churches and community centers will serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Officials said that meals and serving times vary by location. Certain sites will also offer grab-and-go meals. 'We are incredibly grateful to the school districts and local partners who will work tirelessly to ensure no child goes without a meal this summer,' Weaver added. 'Summer Break Café offers more than nutrition: it provides partnership and peace of mind for struggling families. The result is stronger communities and a brighter, healthier future for our young people.' Upstate leaders support program to bury powerlines
CLEMSON, S.C. (WSPA) – The City of Clemson said many lessons were learned during Hurricane Helene. Now they're making sure everyone knows about a program leaders said can save you thousands. It's called 'Down Under Electric.' 'The partnership started in 2022, and since then, we've had over 150 applications,' said Allison Gantte, Clemson Deputy City Administrator. Adam Jones, one of the participants in the program, said he lost power for nine days during Helene. His service line was taken off of the pole by a fallen tree. 'Nine days was a long time to not have power. I didn't want to go through that one again,' said Jones Jones said there are a few ways that crews can hide power lines. He decided on the line under his driveway. 'They came out here with a drill rig and they drilled in the conductors,' said Jones. 'Then, they ran them (lines) up and connected them to the service line above. They drilled the line underground and as you follow across the driveway, you can see a couple of white dots and that's where the conductors and sleeves were drilled. They came around the side of the house over to the meter socket.' Duke Energy said placing a line underground doesn't entirely eliminate a chance for an outage, but underground lines are less vulnerable to weather and generally easier to maintain. The stipend between the City of Clemson and Duke Energy is 3,000. Homeowners are responsible for the rest. 'It varies by property because each property is unique. If you have to go under the driveway, it's going to be more expensive than going through the yard,' said Gantte. If interested, you can fill out a form right at your fingertips. 'It's a very simple form. You'll put your name, your address, your phone number and your email, and then you'll click if you have overhead lines or underground and if you have overhead lines you are eligible,' said Gantte. Officials said homeowners deciding to participate in this program have 30 days to pay any additional cost over the allotted $3,000 before work can begin.
