QCA fire departments receive state grants to buy small equipment
Several fire departments in the QCA recently received grants to help them buy more equipment.
The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has announced the recipients of the 2024 Small Equipment Grant Program. A total of $4 million was awarded to 178 fire departments/districts and EMS providers statewide. The program was developed to provide grants of up to $26,000 each to buy small firefighting and ambulance equipment.
This program addresses a problem that has caused difficulties for fire departments and not-for profit ambulance services in Illinois, especially those that have trouble generating enough revenue for small equipment. The grants give eligible applicants an opportunity to purchase small equipment that they may otherwise not be able to buy. The OSFM received 347 applications, requesting about $7.7 million in funding for this grant cycle.
'Grant programs like our Small Equipment Grant Program are critical in providing fire departments and ambulance providers with the necessary equipment to ensure their staff can perform their duties safely and efficiently,' said Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera. 'These grants alleviate the burden of tough financial decisions, allowing departments to acquire essential tools without delay, ensuring they have what they need when they need it,'
Most Illinois fire departments, fire protections districts, township fire departments and stand-alone, nonprofit ambulance service providers were eligible to apply for the grants. All applicants were required to have participated in the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) for a minimum of two years before applying.
Local fire departments that received grants include:
Bureau:
Mineral-Gold Fire Protection District $24,991.73
Henry:
Colona Community Fire Protection District $21,500
Kewanee Fire Department $21,455.46
Jo Daviess:
Apple River Fire Protection District $26,000
Rock Island:
Hampton Fire Rescue $17,500
Whiteside:
Erie Fire Protection District $23,919

Competition Bureau publishes competitor property controls guidance
GATINEAU, QC, June 4, 2025 /CNW/ - The Competition Bureau has published updated guidance on competitor property controls following a public consultation. The guidance provides Canadians transparency on the Bureau's enforcement approach to competitor property controls under the Competition Act. The Bureau will continue to revise its approach as it gains more experience, as circumstances change, or as the law continues to evolve. Competitor property controls are restrictions that limit how a property can be used by others. They can raise serious competition concerns, for example, by making it difficult for businesses to open new stores, or by limiting the products that can be sold in a store. The Bureau encourages Canadian businesses to review the guidance and ensure that their existing or planned property controls comply with the law. Wild horses for sale in South Sioux City
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KCAU) — Across the United States, there are more than 73,000 wild horses that roam free, and herds can grow too large for the region to sustain. That's where the Bureau of Land Management comes in. 'These horses were gathered on the ranges between Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, various states that they roam on, on the Bureau, on the Bureau of Land Management, wild horse areas, herd management areas. And we gather them to bring down the numbers and bring them to [the] appropriate management level,' said Wendlandt. These American mustangs are part of the country's history, as the wild horses aren't truly wild; they're descendants of Spanish horses that became feral over time. Potential adopters have to ensure they are able to care for a horse for its lifetime. If they can, they can bring home some American heritage. 'I've seen them being gathered on the range, and being able to follow that all the way through to a happy home is the best part of my job. And being able to work with somebody that they, maybe they saw it on the range, maybe this is the first time they've even heard about this program, and being able to adopt an animal to them. And then see the happy adopter and the happy horse,' said Wendlandt. Those who weren't able to make it out on Friday, you still have time, as the horse sale continues on Saturday from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. at the Dakota Thurston Fairgrounds. Fort Worth replaces Austin as 4th-largest Texas city. What is the fastest-growing US city?
It's official: Fort Worth has replaced Austin as the fourth-largest Texas city, hitting the million milestone in 2024. On Thursday, the U.S. Census Bureau published new population data from July 2024 and revealed changes in both national and state rankings. Fort Worth's rise over Austin was initially suspected in November, when the Texas Demographic Center released its 2023 Population Estimates report. Fort Worth also became the 11th most populous city in the country, pushing Austin to 13th, below San Jose. Texas cities dominated the 2024 lists of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, in both percentage and numerical increases. The findings compared the newly-released July 2024 data with July 2023 numbers. Texas claimed nearly half of the country's 15 fastest-growing cities, with five located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Four of the five fastest-growing U.S. cities are found in the Lone Star State. City, state % increase 2024 total pop.
