Ulster aiming for play-off spot in Interpros

BBC News2 days ago
Ulster head coach Murray Houston says that his side are aiming for a play-off position as they begin their Interprovincial Championship against Leinster on Sunday.Houston's side finished fourth in the table last year, drawing one and losing two of their three games. They take on reigning champions Leinster, who they beat in a warm-up game last month, and Houston hopes that result will give his side confidence heading into the fixture at Donnybrook."If we play to our potential, we're looking to get into the play-off position and the final if we get things right, but we have to go prove that," he told BBC Sport NI's Nicola McCarthy."It's going to be a really big battle between us and Leinster. They're going to be a much-changed team from the warm-up fixture, and we have to be ready for that challenge."
Contracted players' absence may 'level out the playing field'
Sunday's game in Dublin is Ben Martin's first as Leinster boss and with many of their contracted players off on international duty with Ireland ahead of the Rugby World Cup, 13 players are set to make their debuts.Houston, who has named India Daley as captain upon her return from a long-term knee injury, will give first Ulster starts to Ruby Starrett, Lauren Darley, Georgia Boyce and Paige Smyth. He is hoping that the young players brought in as a result of more senior players gearing up for the World Cup with Ireland, can grasp their chance."We'll be missing some of those contracted players, but it's presented the opportunity for players who otherwise wouldn't have had those opportunities," he said. "In terms of the competition, it might level out the playing field with the players that are available. It's good as a province too, to see the depth and see what our club players' levels are like."Leinster beat Ulster 39-14 at the Kingspan Stadium last year, but Houston believes his side have improved in key areas since that result and are better prepared to challenge."We want to be sharper on our transitions, when we lose the ball and we've had a big emphasis on our contact skills, particularly around the breakdown," he added."That is going to be key battle for us, if we can get that right on the day that will put us in good stead."

Comebacks, stunners and 'Super Cooper' - the Irish Premiership returns

The Irish Premiership returned at the weekend with all 12 teams in action across Saturday and Ballymena United, Carrick Rangers, Coleraine, Glentoran and Linfield all began their campaigns with opening day first six games of the season served up the debuts of plenty of new signings, new kits and goals galore with some interesting Sport NI looks at five of the biggest talking points from the weekend's action. Refereeing controversy at Seaview There was an early contender for game of the season at Seaview and few could have envisaged Carrick Rangers fighting back to win 4-3 when they fell 3-0 behind after 32 minutes against Crues, who look to be trying to evolve their playing style under Declan Caddell this year, played some scintillating football in that first half unearthing Kieran Offord from Scotland last season, they seem to have hit the jackpot again in that market again with some of their latest Bryden and Adam Brooks scored on their debuts, Elliot Dunlop was a constant thorn in Carrick's side with his pace and directness, and Finley Thorndike, as he did at Glentoran, showed glimpses of his Baxter's decision to sign a number of former Crusaders players looked to have backfired as their lack of pace in defence was exposed, but they showed ruthlessness when chances presented themselves to stay in the Gibson produced two clinical finishes whilst Jack Scott twice held his nerve from the spot to help them to a remarkable comeback awarding of both those spot kicks was contentious with Crues boss Caddell less than impressed with referee Mark Dillion, who had a tough afternoon in north decision to award the first spot kick when Aidan Steele was taken down by Dunlop proved to be something of a turning point as Scott converted to spark the ire lay firmly with the fact Dillion's assistant had initially signalled for a throw-in to Crusaders and the referee overruled him to award the penalty."Two huge calls from the referee that has given Carrick Rangers three points today," Caddell said post-match and it is hard to argue the referee's decisions did not have a huge bearing on the game. Rocket from Rocks nets Sky Blues three points As well as a game of the season contender on opening day, we also had a goal of the season contender from an unlikely source in Ballymena United's Donal industrious midfielder is not renowned for his goal scoring prowess but his double on Saturday helped the Sky Blues to a 2-0 opening day win over Glenavon at Mourneview nipped in at the back post to tuck home the opener in the first half and then produced a stunning strike for his second, lobbing goalkeeper Jacob Carney from long range to seal all three of taking the plaudits post-match, Rocks admitted to BBC Sport NI the shot was more hit and hope than Wayne Rooney esque!"My legs were getting a bit heavy as it was the first game of the season, but I looked up and caught the keeper off his line, struck it well and it went in off the underside of the crossbar," he said. Dream start for clinical Bangor Bangor marked their return to the top flight with a first Irish Premiership win since December 2008 and they were well worth their 3-1 victory over Cliftonville at Clandeboye Park Lee Feeney said that he had trialled three different formations in the build-up to the game due to injuries and he landed on a winning well-drilled Seasiders did their homework as they frustrated Cliftonville and took their chances when they came, exploiting the Reds' weakness in the Arthurs and former Reds striker Michael Morgan both headed home from good deliveries to hand Bangor a valuable three was a difficult afternoon for Jim Magilton's side, who struck the crossbar three times but failed to really create many clear-cut Ryan Curran's equaliser they had a spell when they looked like they might go on and win the game, but they switched off defensively and were duly games against Coleraine, Larne and Linfield to come this month, Magilton will hope that result will be a huge wake-up call. Super Cooper New team, same old Joel year's Player of the Season Cooper scored the winner on his debut for new-look Coleraine to get his and their season off to a former Linfield man showed his signature composure as he buried a low shot beyond Rohan Ferguson with four minutes left at the Coleraine Showgrounds to edge a tense encounter against was a game that looked to be drifting towards a goalless draw before Cooper sprinkled some magic to earn a crucial win for Ruaidhri was the difference for Linfield on a number of occasions last year as they romped to the title, with many of his 19 goals helping to decide will hope for a similar impact this year as they look to mount a serious title Larne, it was a familiar tale of a tired side after their European exploits on Thursday as they were punished for a lapse in concentration in defence for the goal. Hat-trick hero Offord It's safe to say that Offord has yet to hit the heights at Linfield as he did in his six-month loan spell at 21-year-old striker's characteristically hard-working attitude has not waned at all, but after arriving at the Blues in January, he struggled in front of impact in Linfield's European campaign to date has been minimal too, but his hat-trick in Sunday's 3-0 win against Dungannon Swifts may just be the start of the Scotsman re-discovering his clinical stroked home a penalty for his first goal, showed composure to stick his second through Declan Dunne's legs and persistence to complete his hat-trick a minute later, heading home after his initially effort was Healy has a 19-goal Cooper hole to fill and with no more additions looking likely, Offord scoring regularly may be just the remedy he needs."For me, he is just getting started. He had the bedding in period last season and now he can show what he can do as he did today," Healy's assistant Ross Oliver said after the forget to follow all of our Irish Premiership coverage on our dedicated Irish League Football page

Justin Rose earns Masters redemption with play-off victory at FedEx St Jude Championship

Justin Rose produced a sensational finish at the FedEx St Jude Championship with six birdies in his last final eight holes to win a play-off against US Open champion JJ Spaun. The Englishman, who at 45 became the oldest European to win on the PGA Tour in the modern era, looked out of it after a bogey at the 12th dropped him to 12 under, two off the pace with Tommy Fleetwood, world No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Spaun ahead of him. But four birdies from the 14th catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard and he narrowly missed a 13-ft putt at the last to win outright. He produced two more birdies in three play-off holes – one a clutch effort after Spaun had holed from distance – with the second from 14ft after Spaun was half that distance away proving decisive as his opponent's attempt to extend the contest raced past. 'That was an amazing last 90 minutes. I never stopped believing,' Rose said in his post-round interview. 'I played unbelievable golf coming down the stretch and had so much fun with it. JJ dropped a bomb on me (at the second extra hole), it was a lot of fun. 'When I bring my best I know I'm good enough to play against the best players in the world. This is going to be a fun one for us to celebrate.' The play-off was packed with drama from the start as Rose – who barely cleared the lake with his drive – gave himself an identical 13-foot putt to the one he missed to win the tournament, but it burned the edge of the cup. Playing the hole again, Rose hit to eight feet but Spaun recreated his US Open final green heroics with a monster birdie, forcing the Englishman to hold his nerve. The hole location was re-cut for the third attempt to avoid shadows and Spaun duly hit it to seven feet but Rose, who had lost his previous four play-offs including, like Spaun, to Rory McIlroy this year, dramatically turned the tables by holing his 14ft birdie and Spaun fired past. Rose's joy meant more heartbreak for Fleetwood, who blew another chance to break his PGA Tour duck at the 162nd attempt with a poor finish. The Ryder Cup team-mates had holidayed together in Portugal last week, but failed to spark each other into life in the final group. Fleetwood did not make a birdie until holing his longest putt of the week from 33ft at the 12th to put him back in a share of the lead. Birdies at the 13th and 15th edged him two in front on 16 under, but as he was escaping with a par after chipping across and off the green with his third at the 16th, Spaun was tying the lead with a birdie at 17. Fleetwood's weak attempt at a seven-foot par putt at the 17th never threatened and needing a birdie at the last just to make a play-off, he drove into a bunker and missed the green with his approach. 'I'm obviously going to be disappointed. There's a lot of positives to take but it won't feel like that right now,' said Fleetwood, whose 29th top-five PGA Tour finish is 11 more than any other player without a win over the last 40 years. 'I'm just going to look at what I feel like I could have done and how close it was.' Scheffler, without his regular caddie Ted Scott who returned home due to a family emergency, finished a shot outside the play-off after two birdies in his final three holes. Jordan Spieth's Ryder Cup hopes were dealt a blow after he dropped out of the top 50 of FedEx Cup rankings and missed the cut for next week's penultimate event after dumping his approach to the last into the water, ending his season and, at 27th in the United States' rankings, likely his Ryder Cup hopes.

NRL star Mitchell Moses is busted in wild act that would get him in HUGE trouble in any workplace in Australia

Parramatta halfback Mitch Moses was caught delivering an almighty on-field spray to his new teammate Tallyn Da Silva while the match was on the line against the North Queensland Cowboys. The Eels moved four points clear of last-placed Gold Coast with a stirring 19-18 win over North Queensland at CommBank Stadium on Sunday. Moses booted the winning field goal with five minutes left to give the Eels their seventh win of the season and help them leapfrog the Cowboys into 13th spot with four games to play. However, with 10 minutes left in the match and the scores level, Moses exploded at Da Silva after the youngster decided to run the ball himself instead of passing to his teammates. Parramatta players looked incredibly frustrated by Da Silva's decision, with Moses caught on camera appearing to yell: 'Tallyn, you f***ing c**t!' Following the match, the skipper was asked about the incident by Bryan Fletcher on Fox Sports' Sunday Night with Matty Johns. 'Yeah, it happens on the field … was a tense game,' Moses explained. 'We'll learn a lot of lessons from that I think. We've got a really young squad at the moment and it's better to learn the lessons winning the game than having a loss.' Footy fans online were divided over Moses' fiery outburst, with some branding him a bully. 'What p**s-weak leadership from Mitchell Moses. Absolutely pathetic,' posted one X user. 'That's not a leader that's a bully,' agreed another. Others backed the Parramatta captain for his actions. 'The game was on the line. He is the captain. Did his job!' posted one user. '100% right he was to berate him, he will be better for it and 10 mins later he was celebrating,' said another. Cowboys coach Todd Payten took a cheeky dig at Mitch Moses for diving in an obstruction call that denied his side a late try On Monday morning, Andrew Voss addressed the incident on SEN radio, saying Da Silva played the 'worst four or five minutes at dummy half in the history of the game'. 'I don't think I've seen a dummy half make so many mistakes and errors of judgement in a short period with his team getting in front by one,' Voss said. 'The on-field berating by Mitchell Moses... that's happened plenty of times. (But) It happened three times in five minutes, how do you come back from that? 'Was it fair game? Mitchell Moses lost his you-know-what. And I can understand it. I can imagine Parramatta fans losing it.' Cowboys coach Todd Payten took a dig at Moses post-match, claiming that the halfback dived in a crucial obstruction call in the last 30 seconds of the game. 'I thought the on-field referee got it right. I've seen Mitchell dive over the years plenty of times,' he said. However, Payten later admitted the call was correct. 'I always think about putting myself on the other side and I think it was the right call in the end,' he said.
