The Music City Hot Chicken Fest returns to East Nashville

Axios03-07-2025
The 2025 Music City Hot Chicken Fest, featuring a firetruck parade, an amateur cooking competition and the city's best hot chicken joints, burns into action at East Park on July 4.
Why it matters: Hot chicken is a uniquely Nashville dish that's been exported around the world.
The inside coop: Local hot chicken restaurants will set up shop to feed festivalgoers, including Prince's, Smack Ya Momma Chicken Shack Express, Hurts Hot Chicken, Eugene's, Nashville Chicken and Waffles, Hattie B's, Momma Joy's and Bill's Hot Fish and Chicken. We suggest trying them all.
Think of it as a sort of around the world challenge that's also a really bad idea.
Yazoo will provide the beer. There's also a fun zone for kids and live music.
The amateur contest is a prestigious badge of honor for home chefs who have mastered Nashville's vintage dish.
Flashback: Hot Chicken Fest launched in 2007. It was the brainchild of then-Mayor Bill Purcell, who explained his thought process to the Bitter Southerner in an excellent story about the history of the dish.

Jordan Chiles taught me her Olympic floor routine

I learned how to do a gymnastics floor routine from Jordan Chiles. Why it matters: A year after the Paris Olympics, her bronze medal is in limbo, but her status as a sports icon isn't. After appearances on red carpets, WNBA games and the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition, the Olympic gold medalist is spending quality time with her fans. Driving the news: Chiles is the latest celebrity to bring curated experiences to the public, courtesy of Airbnb's new "Originals" feature. Guests have shared a home-cooked meal with Megan Thee Stallion and played football with Patrick Mahomes. "I have dreams of experiencing things with my fans, and I think this was such a great opportunity to do that," Chiles tells Axios. State of play: The UCLA gymnastics star hosted four sessions over two days in a downtown Los Angeles studio. The room was splashed with purple — a tribute to her Prince-inspired routine — and filled with Chiles' sayings and mantras like, "always believe in the power of your dreams," and "I'm that girl." Behind the scenes: She led me and seven other guests through a meditation, taught us how to perform her floor routine (minus the flips), sat down for a group Q&A and ended the evening with a photo opp and book signing. My thought bubble: Airbnb charged guests $150 for the two-hour session, and it was worth it. The celebrity gymnast kept the floor routine portion fun and light, she was welcoming and vulnerable during the Q&A and we got gifts (including signed copies of her book) that amounted to roughly half of the price of entry. What she's saying: As for the status of her bronze medal, Chiles says she's "focusing on continuing to live life." "I can't really do anything about it anymore ... at the end of the day, I'm always going to be loved, I'm always going to be supported. I'm going to continue to fight for who I am."

Dogs Trying To Play Fetch With Baby Sister Melt Hearts

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Four dogs hoping for a game of fetch have melted hearts on the internet after trying to recruit the youngest member of their family as their new playmate. In a clip posted on TikTok by Kenneth Ray Prince (@kennyprince1), his Australian shepherd trots up to his 4-month-old granddaughter and drops a ball into her baby bouncer before barking expectantly. The on-screen text reads: "See if the new hooman will throw it!" "They actually did it again," Prince told Newsweek. "I had to distract them to leave her alone." Prince, 60, explained the lineup of furry hopefuls: Arlo the Australian shepherd; Archer the corgi; Beat the Border collie; and Murphy the Maltipoo. "My Australian shepherd kept dropping the ball in front of my granddaughter," Prince added. From left: The Australian shepherd, corgi, Border collie and Maltipoo dogs try to play fetch with the baby girl. @kennyprince1 While the dogs' persistence is cute, it is also instinctive. Australian shepherds, corgis and Border collies are all herding breeds, historically bred to work closely with humans and respond to movement, making them especially motivated by games such as fetch. Dogs are also surprisingly socially aware. Evidence suggests they can tell the difference between adults and children, often adjusting their behavior, though their natural drive to play can still override any hesitation. Dropping a ball repeatedly in front of someone—even a baby—is a form of social teaching, a way for canines to encourage a playmate to join in. Maltipoos, while not a herding breed, are famously social and affectionate, making them equally eager to be part of the action. Prince's clip has received over 1.4 million views and almost 190,000 likes. Hundreds of TikTok users commented on the clip. "Did they have a group meeting before walking over?" one user wrote. "The corgi giving orders and the aussie carrying out the tasks is so accurate," another commented. A third user posted: "This is amazing. People under estimate the intelligence of dogs. The corgi is clearly the boss!" Many other users agreed that Archer was the mastermind behind the plan. "People love it; a lot of funny comments," Kenny said. While the baby girl isn't quite ready to throw a ball yet, judging by her four-legged fan club, she will have no shortage of eager playmates when she does.
