Drought-hit Russian grain region Rostov declares state of emergency
MOSCOW, June 10 (Reuters) - Russia's largest grain producing region, Rostov, has declared a state of agricultural emergency in some drought-hit areas, the local governor said on Tuesday.
The emergency regime, which enables farmers to seek compensation for losses, also serves as a signal for markets on prospects for this year's harvest.
"This year farmers have to work under extremely unfavourable weather conditions. Today we are introducing a state of emergency in some districts of the region due to drought," governor Yuri Slyusar wrote on Telegram.
The region had also been hit by spring frosts, though they were less severe than last year, when the Rostov grain harvest fell by more than a fifth owing to adverse weather events. Harvesting in the region is due to start in the second half of June.
This year's grain harvest in Russia, the world's largest wheat exporter, is projected to reach 135 million metric tons, up from last year's 130 million tons, Deputy Prime Minister for Agriculture Dmitry Patrushev said earlier on Tuesday.

Aussies shiver as region records coldest night in more than 40 years
Millions of Australians shivered through freezing temperatures overnight with some parts of the country recording their coldest night in decades. Mt Isa, in north-west Queensland, recorded its coldest June night in 44 years after temperatures plunged to -0.7C. Further east, in Richmond, a minimum temperature of -0.1C was the first sub-zero night in 13 years. Oakey on the Darling Downs reached a low of -4.2C. 'What we're seeing is a very stubborn high pressure system sitting over the east coast,' the Bureau of Meteorology's Jonathon How told Daily Mail Australia. 'It's made up of light wind, clear skies and cool air; the clear sky does mean that temperature can drop overnight. 'We are expecting another frosty night across Queensland tonight.' In NSW, the cold snap blanketed the Central Tablelands in snow and temperatures sank below freezing. Melbourne will remain drier heading into the end of the week after multiple rounds of showers fell across Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. Many of the areas to receive the dampening had endured a record dry start to the year, with farmers saying more rain was needed to break the drought. 'Southern and south-eastern Australia will need to see more healthy rain-bearing systems this winter to further reduce or wipe out the longer-term rainfall deficiencies,' Weatherzone wrote at the time. Gusty showers and potential storms developing across southern Western Australia on Friday as a cold front clips the bottom of the state. The front is tipped to reach Adelaide on Saturday, bringing showers to some of the driest regions of the state. The Mid North of the state looks likely to miss out on the much-needed rain, but the upper Eyre Peninsula –which has seen the least rainfall all year– should receive some of the showers.

Yorkshire drought declared
A drought has been declared across Yorkshire by the Environment Agency (EA).The drought is due to weeks of usually dry weather across the county, which has meant low water levels in rivers and reservoirs. The announcement comes after England experienced its driest spring in more than 100 years, according to the Met Water's announcement isn't the first of 2025 - in late May a drought was declared for the North West. Claire Barrow, the Environment Agency's planning manager for Yorkshire, said: "We had 22 days of almost no recorded rainfall in May.""While we have had some rain at the start of June, it has not been enough to reverse the impacts of the prolonged dry weather."If there's not enough rain then the levels in the reservoirs that supply water across a certain area go down and if they fall beyond a certain level over a period of time then a drought is the drought announcement doesn't change much right now for those in Yorkshire, if the dry weather continues measures could be put in place to help reduce the amount of water could include things such as bans on using hosepipes. Yorkshire's last drought occurred in 2022 - at this time a hosepipe ban was put in place. The 2022 ban lasted from August to that drought, Yorkshire Water also made recommendations to customers such as: singing a four minute song whilst showering to keep showers shortonly cleaning cars' mirrors, windows and lights and not watering garden lawns Yorkshire Water said that reservoir levels are at 62.3% - which they say is a lot lower than the average for this time of year (85.5%).But a spokesperson for the company said the reduction in levels had slowed due to some recent rainfall.
