Will ‘M3GAN 2.0' Run Brad Pitt's ‘F1' Off The Road At U.S. Box Office?
Apple Original Films' Brad Pitt movie F1 and Blumhouse and Atomic Monster/Universal's M3GAN 2.0 hit three-week tracking Thursday morning, each with an eye at $30 million-plus in their respective three-day U.S. box office openings June 27-29, the pre-July 4th frame.
Some, not all, sources are seeing that F1, which cost Apple a net $200M (not $300M), actually has the edge over the killer doll with $35M, and maybe a $40M start in the U.S. and Canada. F1, which also stars Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon and Damson Idris, was shot around the world at myriad Formula One races.

When it comes to F1, the rally is expected to be at the overseas box office, where Formula One is more popular than the U.S.; Warner Bros is distributing the movie globally on behalf of Apple. The footage shown at CinemaCon riveted the room of exhibitors.
That said, we've heard the Joseph Kosinski-directed movie has tested well, and could surprise. 'It definitely moves faster than Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning' one non-Warner Bros source told us. Media screenings are already being held for F1.
The first M3GAN opened in the post-2023 New Year corridor to a surprising $30.4M and legged out to $95.1M domestic, $180M worldwide on a $12M production cost, fueled by TikTok and dancing Megan doll troupe videos that made a splash at major landmarks and on late-night talk shows. The PG-13 sequel is strongest with women under 25 in unaided awareness but also solid in women over 25, as well as all men. In fact, M3GAN 2.0 came on ahead of its first chapter in unaided awareness and in total awareness (hello, it's a sequel!).
Unaided awareness is that polling category whereby those being queried actually bring up the title of a movie they're interested in without being prodded by the pollster.
F1's best demos are men in unaided awareness, but in first choice men over 25 are leading, followed by women over 25 and men under 25. In unaided awareness, F1's tracking is ahead of pre-Covid's Ford v. Ferrari, which opened to $31.4M and legged out to $117.6M.
Kosinski previously directed Tom Cruise's biggest opening, Top Gun: Maverick, which launched to $126.7M in its first three days of Memorial Day weekend 2022, legging out to $718.7M domestic. F1 isn't expected to emulate that long-awaited sequel's box office trajectory.
Both movies will run into Universal's Jurassic World: Rebirth in cinemas on Wednesday, July 2.

In the present day, Sonny still races cars, but his F1 dreams have all but disappeared. Sonny's former teammate, Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), offers him the deal of a lifetime. Ruben wants Sonny to come out of retirement and race for his team, Apex Grand Prix (APXGP). Ruben needs a veteran to pair with his hotshot rookie, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). Despite having no interest in being a mentor, Sonny reluctantly agrees and returns behind the wheel for one last shot at redemption. Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Kim Bodnia also star. Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski directs F1 from a screenplay written by Ehren Kruger, based on a story the two cowrote. F1 races into theaters and IMAX on June 27.

Disney, NBCUniversal sue AI creator Midjourney in copyright dispute

File Photo by Activedia/Pixabay June 11 (UPI) -- Disney and NBCUniversal have joined legal teams in a lawsuit against AI image maker Midjourney over multiple claims of copyright infringement. The lawsuit filed Tuesday in California's U.S. central district claimed that Midjourney, a generative artificial intelligence startup, utilized and distributed proprietary AI-generated characters from NBCU and Disney productions such as the Simpsons, Star Wars, Toy Story, Shrek and others. It marked the first AI-related infringement lawsuit taken on by a Hollywood giant. "This is an extremely significant development," IP lawyer Chad Hummel told Wired. Meanwhile, Universal and Disney have petitioned for a jury trial and argue it risks upending "the bedrock incentives of U.S. copyright law." The two plaintiffs claimed that Midjourney's own website displayed "hundreds, if not thousands, of images generated by its Image Service at the request of its subscribers" they believed infringed on their copyrighted works. "Midjourney's bootlegging business model and defiance of U.S copyright law are not only an attack on Disney, Universal, and the hard-working creative community that brings the magic of movies to life, but are also a broader threat to the American motion picture industry," the complaint continued. The joint suit further says that San Francisco-based Midjourney allegedly ignored prior legal requests to cease and desist and included dozens of examples in the complaint, calling Midjourney a "bottomless pit of plagiarism." In 2023, Midjourney reported more than $200 million in revenue and in 2024 took in an additional $100 million on top of it to beat the prior year. "Midjourney, which has attracted millions of subscribers and made $300 million last year alone, is focused on its own bottom line and ignored Plaintiffs' demands," according to court documents. The two movie studios seek an unspecified amount in monetary damages, and further requested injunctive relief in order to prevent Midjourney from any future copyright violations.

Disney and Universal team up to sue AI photo generator Midjourney, claiming copyright infringement
Disney and Universal are suing AI photo generation company Midjourney, marking the first major legal showdown between Hollywood studios and an artificial intelligence company. Midjourney, which enables users to create realistic-looking images from a text prompt in just seconds, is one of the most popular AI image generators. The movie companies allege that Midjourney trained its AI models on their intellectual property and that it generates images featuring their famous characters in violation of copyright law, according to a complaint filed Wednesday in California federal court. In their complaint, the studios call Midjourney a 'virtual vending machine' and 'bottomless pit of plagiarism' that generates 'endless unauthorized copies of Disney's and Universal's copyrighted works.' Most large, publicly available AI models are trained on large repositories of data, including images and video, from across the internet, often without asking permission. Artists, authors, musicians and Hollywood actors have also raised concerns about their work or likeness being used to train generative AI tools, which could then be used to replace them. Midjourney and other AI firms were sued in a separate copyright infringement case by a group of visual artists in 2023, which the companies have sought to dismiss but which is currently in discovery. But Wednesday's lawsuit marks the first time major Hollywood studios have sued an AI company. The lawsuit cites instances where Midjourney could easily be prompted to generate popular Universal and Disney characters, including Star Wars characters, Bart Simpson, Shrek, Ariel from 'The Little Mermaid,' Wall-E, the minions from the film 'Despicable Me' and more. Midjourney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But in response to the 2023 lawsuit, Midjourney argued that any single image created by AI 'comprises an infinitesimal fragment of a model's training, just as each visual (every face, sunset, painting) an artist has ever perceived and every text a writer has ever read comprises a tiny fraction of the content and imagery that inform their imagination.' Disney's legal team says that its suit is over simple copyright infringement, however. 'We are bullish on the promise of AI technology and optimistic about how it can be used responsibly as a tool to further human creativity,' Horacio Gutierrez, Disney's senior executive vice president and chief legal and compliance officer said in a statement to CNN. 'But piracy is piracy, and the fact that it's done by an AI company does not make it any less infringing.' The Motion Picture Association also weighed in on the lawsuit on Wednesday, with Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin calling copyright protection 'the backbone of our industry.' 'A balanced approach to AI that both protects intellectual property and embraces responsible, human-centered innovation is critical for maintaining America's global leadership in creative industries,' Rivkin said in a statement. Disney and Universal claim Midjourney has 21 million subscribers and earned $300 million in revenue last year. Disney and Universal previously asked Midjourney to stop any alleged infringement or to implement technology to prevent users from generating images featuring their intellectual property, but the company has 'ignored' their requests, according to the complaint. 'Midjourney already has in place technological measures to prevent its distribution and public display of certain images and artwork such as violence or nudity,' the complaint states. 'And other AI image- and video-generating services have instituted copyright protection measures that recognize and protect the rights of content creators like Disney and Universal.' Disney and Universal are seeking $150,000 per infringed work and an order preventing future copyright infringement by Midjourney, among other damages, their complaint states. An exhibit to the complaint lists more than 150 works that were allegedly infringed — meaning damages from the lawsuit, if Disney and Universal win, could top $20 million.
