Six Teams to Compete at Borneo Games 2025 in Kuching
Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the contingents involved are Brunei, Sarawak, Sabah, Labuan, and Indonesia's East and West Kalimantan provinces.
He said eight sports will be contested during the event – badminton, lawn bowls, athletics, archery, swimming, tug of war, blowpipe, and golf.
'As of now, 124 gold medals are expected to be contested. However, the number may increase following requests to add more gold medal events in the blowpipe competition,' he told a press conference here today.
An estimated 5,000 participants are expected to attend, including athletes, coaches, team managers, referees, technical officials, secretariat staff, media, volunteers, and representatives from relevant agencies.
The Borneo Games was first held in 1995, with the most recent edition taking place in 2013 in Labuan.

Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who officiated at the prize presentation ceremony at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) compound, described the event as a very exciting initiative that continues to promote both sports and tourism in Sarawak. 'This is not the first time the event has received an overwhelming response. I was informed that the number of participants has grown from year to year,' he told reporters after presenting prizes to the winners. Of the 3,200 registered participants, 1,400 competed in the 21km half marathon, 700 in the 10km race, and 1,100 in the 5km fun run. Sarawakians made up the majority at 77 per cent, followed by 15 per cent from Peninsular Malaysia, two per cent from Sabah, and six per cent from overseas. International runners came from countries including Australia, Brunei, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Kenya, Korea, and the United Kingdom. Held in conjunction with the Kuching City Day celebration, the event was organised by the Kuching City Joggers Club (CJC) in collaboration with MBKS. This year's edition is officially accredited by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), with certified routes for the 21km and 10km categories. The 21km and 10km races were competitive, offering a total of RM54,600 in cash prizes, including a newly introduced national category to encourage local athletes. The 5km fun run was non-competitive and aimed at families and casual runners. All participants received an official event T-shirt, race bib, e-certificate and finisher's medal. Those who completed the 21km race also received a special finisher's T-shirt, while the top 100 finishers took home a limited-edition shirt. Abdul Karim noted that such sporting events have a positive impact on Sarawak's tourism sector. 'When runners come to Sarawak, they stay in hotels, eat at our local restaurants, and purchase souvenirs to bring home. These are the things that will help our tourism industry,' he said. Among this year's participants were an 82-year-old runner from Kuching and the oldest participant, an 86-year-old veteran from Ipoh who had served in Sarawak in the 1960s and returned to join the event with several friends. The race flagged off early this morning, with the 21km starting at 4am, followed by the 10km at 6am and the 5km fun run at 6.30am. A Zumba cooling-down session was held at 7.30am before the prize-giving ceremony at 7.45am. Haze unlikely to affect Borneo Games 2025, says Abd Karim

He said the haze was mainly caused by fires in Indonesia's Riau Archipelago, with the smoke drifting into Sarawak due to the shifting wind directions, particularly affecting the Kuching area. 'Now, because of the change in the wind, the direct flight is moving to Kuching, but the Riau Archipelago is not that big. 'Once they manage to control the fires, I believe we won't be seeing this kind of smoke or the effects that we are seeing today. 'So by the time the Borneo Games are going to be held, which is in September, same time as the Air Supply (concert), I think by that time it should be okay,' he told reporters after officiating the launch of the 'Air Supply 50th Anniversary Concert' at The Spring Mall here today. When asked whether there are contingency plans to postpone the event should the haze persist, Abdul Karim said the organisers had been monitoring the situation closely but no postponement had been planned at this time. 'If the situation remains moderate and manageable, we certainly hope the championship can proceed without issue. 'As I mentioned earlier, it's very likely that when the students arrive during that period, the API (Air Pollutant Index) will still be within an acceptable range,' he said. On preparations for the Games, the state minister gave assurance that Sarawak was fully ready, noting that the state successfully hosted the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in August last year, and had the experience and capability to manage such events. 'With only five core sports and two traditional events in the Borneo Games, compared to over 30 in Sukma, this is relatively easy for us,' he said. He added that the organising committee, Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), volunteer teams, and officials from his ministry were already mobilised and committed to ensuring a successful event. As for the state's athletes, Abdul Karim said preparations are going well. He stressed that while medals are important, the true objective of the Borneo Games is to foster stronger ties and camaraderie among the provinces and states across Borneo. Borneo Junior Open squash tourney records most entries, 167 players from overseas
KUCHING (July 17): The Borneo Junior Open Squash Tournament has recorded its highest-ever turnout, said Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. He said 346 junior players from across Malaysia and 167 international players from 16 countries are competing in this year's edition. The growing participation reflects Sarawak's potential as a host for high-profile international sporting events, he said. 'This event provides a great platform for both local and international junior squash players to come together in Kuching for competitive games,' he said during the tournament's welcoming dinner last night. The Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said this is a proud moment for Sarawak, not just because of the numbers, but because it places Sarawak firmly on the international squash map. He thanked the Squash Racquets Association of Sarawak (SRAS), Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia, and long-time sponsor Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) for their commitment to developing the tournament. Abdul Karim said the state government would continue to support the organisation of both national and international sporting events in Sarawak. He also revealed that plans are in motion to upgrade squash facilities in the state to accommodate more courts and enable Sarawak to host more international-level events in future. Returning nations competing this year are Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Pakistan, Singapore, the Philippines, and the United States, while Canada, New Zealand, Russia, and Sri Lanka are making their debut appearances at the championship.
