Real Madrid star Caroline Weir makes it a Scottish double as she joins McTominay on Ballon d'Or shortlist

Caroline Weir has joined Scott McTominay in securing a unique Scottish double after the pair were named on the shortlists for the 2025 Ballon d'Or awards yesterday. As Mail Sport revealed on Thursday, Napoli's Serie A winner McTominay is the first male Scottish player to be nominated for the honour since Ally McCoist in 1987. And now Real Madrid 's Weir has made history by becoming the first Scottish woman to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or Feminin — which was first presented in 2018 — after she was confirmed on a shortlist of 30 for the prestigious individual award. Scotland attacker Weir, 30, enjoyed another strong campaign for the Spanish side after battling back from nine months out with a serious knee injury. She scored in her comeback match before netting 14 times in all competitions as Real Madrid finish second in La Liga F. She has won 112 caps and scored 19 goals for Scotland, as well as representing her country at Euro 2017 and World Cup in 2019. Scotland midfielder McTominay, 28, was nominated for European football's most coveted individual award after guiding Napoli to the league title in a dream first season there, scoring 16 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions for Antonio Conte's side. The late Denis Law remains the only Scot to have won the Ballon d'Or, when he collected the award in 1964 after a 46-goal season for Manchester United. 'The Scottish FA extends its congratulations to Scott McTominay and Caroline Weir, who have both been named on the shortlists for the 2025 Ballon d'Or awards', read a statement from Hampden last night.
