CBI arrests senior ED official from Odisha in Rs 2-crore bribery case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a deputy director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Odisha on Friday in connection with an alleged bribery deal.
The agency apprehended the senior ED official, Chintan Raghuvanshi, a 2013-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, after he demanded a bribe of Rs 2 crore from an Odisha-based mining trader. This was allegedly after the ED raided multiple locations linked to the businessman's company.
The CBI laid a trap after the complainant purportedly informed the agency about the situation. An FIR was lodged Thursday.
'In the complaint, it is alleged that Chintan Raghuvanahi has demanded a bribe of Rs 5 crore (which was further reduced to Rs 2 crore), out of which, first installment of Rs 50 lakh is to be paid to him on 28.05.2025 through… a private person in exchange for not attaching his hospital and not arresting him and to settle an ED case,' read the FIR.
The agency verified the complaint through an officer, who in his report, said the 'private person' had directed the complainant to pay Rs 50 lakh as the first installment at 11 am Thursday, CBI sources told The Indian Express, adding that the agency recovered colour-coded cash while arrested the official.
The ED official's lawyer Siddhant Mohanty was quoted by PTI as saying in Bhubaneswar that a special CBI court has remanded Raghuvanshi to judicial custody for 14 days.
'However, his bail petition has not been rejected. It will be heard on June 4,' Mohanty said.
When contacted, the lawyer refused to make any further comments.

Gopal Kanda moves court for cancellation of ED's Look Out Circular
New Delhi [India], May 31 (ANI): Gopal Goyal, alias Gopal Kanda, has moved to the Rouse Avenue court for the cancellation of a Look Out Circular (LOC) issued against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case. His brother, Gobind Kumar Goyal, and son, Lakh Ram Goyal, have also moved similar applications. The case is connected with Ram Kishor Arora and Supertech Ltd. Special Judge Jitendra Singh on Saturday granted the prosecution a final opportunity to file a reply to the applications. Special public prosecutor (SPP) N K Matta, along with Mohd. Faizan appeared for the ED and sought time to file a response. The court has listed the matter for a hearing on June 3. Applications seeking cancellation/suspension of LOCs were filed on May 28. ED has recently filed a supplementary Prosecution complaint on January 17 against the Goyal brothers. The petitioner stated that on November 2, 2023, when Gopal Goyal was going to Singapore, he was stopped at Indira Gandhi International Airport on the pretext of an LOC opened against him by the ED in this case. The plea stated that LOC is illegal and unwarranted, as the applicant joined and cooperated in the investigation. The court is yet to take the cognisance of the supplementary Prosecution complaint. In another application, Gobind Goyal states that the ED has opened LOCs against his nephew Lakh Ram Goyal and brother Gopal Goyal. He has genuine apprehension that the ED has also opened an LOC against him. The third application moved by Lakh Ram Goyal stated that he has not been arrayed as an accused in the complaint. He had joined and cooperated with the ED's investigation. It is further stated that Lakh Ram was stopped at the airport on December 21, 2024, on the pretext of an LOC being opened against him. He was travelling from Goa to Bengaluru with his family. This case is connected with Ram Kishor Arora and Supertech Ltd. A Prosecution complaint was filed on August 24, 2023. This case was transferred to the Patiala House Court from the Rouse Avenue Court. The court noted that the Patiala House court had already taken cognisance of the Prosecution complaint on September 26, 2023 and issued a summons to Ram Kishor Arora, M/s Supertech Ltd., and other accused persons. NIA conducts searches at 15 locations in 8 states in Pak spying case
ANI 01 Jun 2025, 00:50 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], May 31 (ANI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted a massive search operation at 15 locations in eight states across the country in a Pakistan-linked espionage case. Searches were conducted at the premises of suspects linked with Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs) in the states of Delhi, Maharashtra (Mumbai), Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Assam and West Bengal. NIA teams have seized several electronic gadgets and sensitive financial documents, along with other incriminating materials, during the searches. These are being extensively examined for clues to the espionage racket being run by Pakistan-based operatives as part of an anti-India terror conspiracy. As per NIA investigations, the suspects targeted in the searches had connections with Pakistani operatives, and acted as financial conduits for carrying out espionage activities in India. NIA had registered the case on 20th May following the arrest of an accused person who had been sharing sensitive information with PIOs since 2023 and had received funds through various conduits in India in lieu of leaking classified information related to national security. The anti-terror agency is continuing with its investigation in the case, registered under sections 61(2), 147, 148 of BNS 2023, sections 3 & 5 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and section 18 of UA(P) Act 1967.
