Israeli attacks kill 62 in Gaza, including three near aid site

At least 62 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip, medical sources told Al Jazeera, as Israel's national security minister called for a 'complete halt' of humanitarian aid supplies to the Palestinian territory.
Local health authorities said on Thursday that Israeli air attacks killed at least 15 people in two separate attacks in Gaza City, including nine people who were killed at a school housing displaced families in the city's Sheikh Radwan suburb. A separate strike killed nine people near a tent encampment in Khan Younis, in the south of the enclave.
Hospital sources told Al Jazeera that nine people were killed and wounded in a drone attack on Deir el-Balah's market street. At least 62 people were killed in Israeli attacks on Wednesday, medical sources said.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society reported that three people were killed and others injured by Israeli army fire while waiting for humanitarian aid near a distribution point at the Netzarim Corridor in central Gaza, the latest in a series of killings at aid distribution points set up by the controversial US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
According to Gaza's Government Media Office, at least 549 Palestinians have been killed while attempting to get food from the sites since the GHF began operations on May 27. It said the attacks on those seeking aid have also caused 4,066 injuries, and that 39 civilians remained missing following the attacks.
According to British charity Save the Children, more than half of the casualties in the attacks near distribution hubs were children. Of the 19 deadly incidents reported, the organisation found that children were among the casualties in 10 of them.
'No-one wants to get aid from these distribution points and who can blame them – it's a death sentence. People are terrified of being killed,' said Ahmad Alhendawi, Save the Children's regional director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe.
The GHF has been criticised by the United Nations and international humanitarian organisations, which say it is inadequate to deliver humanitarian supplies to Gaza's population.
The GHF took over aid operations in May, following mounting criticism against Israel's months-long total blockade on aid getting into the Strip. That had pushed most of the population to the brink of starvation. On Thursday, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for the Israeli government to reimpose its total blockade.
'The humanitarian aid currently entering Gaza is an absolute disgrace,' he said, adding that 'what is needed in Gaza is not a temporary halt to 'humanitarian' aid, but a complete stop.'
Meanwhile, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees warned that families across Gaza are at risk of dying of thirst amid the collapse of water supply systems. UNRWA noted that only 40 percent of drinking water production facilities are still operating, and that 'Gaza is on the edge of a man-made drought.
'Extracting water from wells stopped due to fuel shortages, others located in dangerous areas that are difficult to access, pipelines are broken and leaking, and water tankers that often do not arrive,' the agency said.

Death toll nears 61,900 as Israel continues to pound Gaza
The number of Palestinians killed in Israel's genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023 has risen to 61,897, the Health Ministry in the blockaded enclave said on Saturday. According to the ministry's daily update, 70 people were killed in the last 24 hours, with eight bodies recovered from the rubble. Another 385 people were injured, bringing the total number of injuries to 155,660 since Israel began its genocidal war in October 2023. The ministry also reported 11 new deaths from starvation and malnutrition, including one child, bringing the total number of famine-related deaths to 251, with 108 of them being children. Search and rescue efforts remain severely hampered, with many victims still under rubble or in the streets, as Israeli airstrikes continue and civil defense teams face extreme equipment shortages. Since March 18, when Israel resumed its military assault after breaking a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement, the ministry said 10,362 Palestinians have been killed and 43,619 injured. Israeli attack kills baby girl in Gaza as more Palestinians die of hunger
An Israeli air attack on the al-Mawasi area of southern Gaza has killed a baby girl and her parents, Nasser Hospital officials have said, as Israel pushes its plan to escalate its offensive in Gaza. Motasem al-Batta, his wife and their baby daughter were killed on Saturday in the tented encampment in southern Gaza. Israel designated al-Mawasi a so-called 'humanitarian', or 'safe', zone early in the war, but it has nonetheless repeatedly come under attack. The attack comes days after Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said the military had been given the green light to 'dismantle' what he described as two remaining Hamas strongholds: Gaza City in the north and al-Mawasi further to the south. A neighbour of the family, Fathi Shubeir, told The Associated Press that displaced civilians were living in the densely populated al-Mawasi area. Speaking of the baby girl, he said, 'Two and a half months, what has she done?' Israel's war on Gaza has killed at least 61,827 people since October 2023. Malnutrition has killed 251 people so far, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Eleven people, including a child, have starved to death in the past 24 hours, the ministry said on Saturday. At Gaza City's al-Shifa Hospital, the lives of more than 200 patients were hanging by a thread, due to acute shortages of medicine and malnutrition. Director Mohammed Abu Salmiya said the hospital was overcrowded with wounded patients amid relentless Israeli bombardments and doctors were performing an increasing number of amputations as they were unable to combat the infection of wounds. According to the World Health Organisation, more than 14,800 patients need lifesaving medical care that is not available in Gaza. Yet, leaving the Strip is not always enough to save a life. Twenty-year-old Marah Abu Zuhri arrived in Pisa on an Italian government humanitarian flight overnight on Wednesday while severely emaciated. The University Hospital of Pisa said she had a 'very complex clinical picture' and serious wasting, before she was reported dead on Friday. Director-General of Gaza's Health Ministry Munir al-Bursh told Al Jazeera that 40,000 infants in the territory were suffering from severe malnutrition amid critical food shortages caused by Israel's restrictions on aid into Gaza. Al Jazeera correspondent Hind Khoudary said the reality of hunger in Gaza was 'devastating.' 'Palestinians have no choice but to see their children die of malnutrition and starvation,' she said. 'The latest to have died from hunger were siblings, aged 16 and 25, who died on the same day.' According to Amjad Shawa, director of the Palestinian NGOs Network, 'only 10 percent' of the daily food supplies needed are entering the territory, 'while the health system is collapsing day by day and our capacity is very limited'. He said Israel's war in Gaza destroyed its socioeconomic structure, leaving Palestinians in the territory 'totally dependent on humanitarian aid'. What is making it into the country is 'a very limited amount, which is only to keep the people alive [at a] minimum level,' he added. The United Nations has warned that levels of starvation and malnutrition in Gaza are at their highest since the war began. The families of 50 Israeli captives still held in Gaza were shaken by the recent release of videos showing their emaciated relatives pleading for help and food. A group representing the families urged Israelis into the streets on Sunday. 'Across the country, hundreds of citizen-led initiatives will pause daily life and join the most just and moral struggle: the struggle to bring all 50 hostages home,' it said in a statement. Netanyahu has rejected criticism that his plan to widen the military offensive would endanger the lives of the remaining captives. The mobilisation of forces is expected to take weeks, and the Israeli prime minister has defended his decision, saying he had 'no choice' but to attack Hamas in Gaza.
