CBI arrests CGST superintendent, seizes assets worth crores

'These properties include three residential flats in Ghaziabad and Moradabad; one commercial shop in Moradabad; 12 residential plots in Rampur and Gajraula. One Creta vehicle in the name of accused public servant was also seized,' a CBI spokesperson on Tuesday said. During searches at the premises of Nishan Singh Malli post arrest, the CBI seized 17 property documents, in his and his family members' name, worth crores. New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) The CBI has arrested a Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) superintendent in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly accepting a Rs 1 lakh bribe for waiving penalty on a private company, officials said. Rs 3 lakh in cash aside from the alleged bribe amount of Rs 3 lakh was confiscated during the searches, the CBI added. 'During search of official premise of accused public servant, relevant documents pertaining to the case were seized and are being scrutinised,' the spokesperson added. The other person arrested by the agency is a tax lawyer who was representing the complainant in the case, the agency said. Both were produced before a special court in Ghaziabad which remanded them to judicial custody. CGST Superintendent Malli allegedly issued a penalty notice to a businessman, who controls the private firm, on account of non-filing of GST returns. Malli, who is posted in Gajraula with additional charge of Amroha in UP, allegedly demanded Rs 4 lakh in collusion with tax lawyer Amit Khandelwal from the businessman for waiving penalty on his company. 'The tax advocate was representing the complainant. However, he entered into a conspiracy with superintendent, CGST, Amroha and pressured the complainant to deliver the demand of undue advantage of Rs 4 lakh to the accused superintendent,' the CBI spokesperson said. Reluctant to pay the bribe, the businessman approached the CBI with a complaint, the CBI said. The agency claimed of laying a trap following which the superintendent and the advocate were caught red handed receiving Rs 1 lakh as an installment of the total bribe demand of Rs 4 lakh. Robert Vadra skips ED summons in PMLA case linked to Sanjay Bhandari

The federal probe agency had questioned the 56-year-old businessman for three consecutive days in April in a separate money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a 2008 land deal in Haryana. The sources said Vadra sought an adjournment of Tuesday's summons, and he will now be given a fresh date. The ED wants to record Vadra's statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and then file a chargesheet against him before the court, sources said. New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Tuesday skipped an ED summons for questioning in a money laundering case linked to UK-based alleged arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari, official sources said. Bhandari (63) fled to London in 2016, soon after the Income Tax Department raided him in Delhi. A UK court earlier this month refused an application filed by the Indian government seeking permission to appeal in Britain's Supreme Court against the discharge of Bhandari in an extradition case, virtually ruling out chances of him being brought to the country to face the law. The ED filed a chargesheet in this case in 2023, alleging that Bhandari acquired the 12, Bryanston Square house in London in 2009 and got it renovated 'as per the directions of Robert Vadra, who provided the funds for the renovation'. Vadra has denied that he owns any London property directly or indirectly. Terming the charges a 'political witch hunt', Vadra said he was being 'hounded and harassed' to subserve political ends. The ED is also investigating Vadra in a separate money laundering case linked to alleged financial irregularities in a land deal in Rajasthan's Bikaner. The federal probe agency had previously questioned Vadra and his mother, Maureen, in this case. PTI NES ARI This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. J'khand: 3 Bangladeshi nationals who escaped from detention camp arrested

The Bangladeshi nationals, identified as Reena Khan, Nipha Akhtar alias Khusi and Md Nazmul Haldhar, escaped from the camp on Monday morning. While one detainee was held at Dhanbad railway station, two others were arrested from Bongaon near Bangladesh-West Bengal border, he said. Hazaribag (Jharkhand), Jun 10 (PTI) Three Bangladeshi nationals, who escaped from the foreigners' holding camp in Jharkhand's Hazaribag, were arrested with help of West Bengal Police, an official said on Tuesday. 'Acting promptly after the incident, a special investigation team (SIT) was set up and it conducted raids at various places to nab them. We also took help of West Bengal Police and succeeded to arrest two female detainees at Bongaon,' Hazaribag SP Anjani Anjan told reporters here. He said Haldhar was arrested at Dhanbad railway station, while trying to escape to Kolkata by train. The SP said the detainees would be shifted to Jai Prakash Narayan Central Jail, Hazaribag, instead of foreigners holding camp following a directive by the court of chief judicial magistrate. The SP said they will now be tried in court under Indian laws, as cases have been filed against them for violating the Foreigners Act.
