Snowflake retools data cloud to fuel AI agents, expand integrations

This story was originally published on CIO Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily CIO Dive newsletter. Snowflake retooled its data cloud platform through a sweeping set of product updates targeting enterprise agentic AI adoption, the company said Tuesday during its annual Snowflake Summit event. The series of announcements came on the heels of Snowflake's Monday agreement to purchase PostgreSQL startup Crunchy Data. The AI data cloud company rolled out a hybrid multicloud data ingestion service called Snowflake Openflow, the Cortex Knowledge Extensions third-party data mining pipeline and AI-powered natural-language analytics and data science assistants under the Snowflake Intelligence and Data Science Agent rubrics. Snowflake also trumpeted the general availability of its Cortex AISQL agentic querying tool and the SnowConvert AI data modernization copilot designed to help enterprises migrate from legacy warehouses. 'We are making it easy to tap into structured data. We are making it easy to tap into unstructured data as well. And we're helping our customers build a strong foundation to lead in the era of agentic AI,' CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy said last month during the company's Q1 earnings call for the 2026 fiscal year. As enterprises seek business value from generative AI-powered agentic automation, major vendors are racing to deploy the data integrations, modernization tools and pipelines organizations need to fuel the technology. The Crunchy Data acquisition brought AI compliance and scaling capabilities in-house for Snowflake, less than a month after Databricks, a competitor in the AI data cloud space, announced its intent to purchase PostgreSQL startup Neon. 'We're doubling down on the momentum behind Postgres and investing in its future while preserving the openness, the extensibility and developer-first ethos that make it great,' Ramaswamy said during a Monday keynote. As part of its integration strategy, Snowflake connected its data cloud to The Associated Press, USA Today and several other publishers through Cortex Knowledge Extensions that let enterprises feed news and other timely data to AI apps and agents, the company said in a Tuesday announcement. The pipeline creates a marketplace for enterprises to source third-party data while ensuring publishers are compensated. Snowflake Intelligence unifies raw and structured data from spreadsheets, documents, images and databases, using Anthropic and OpenAI large language models. The integration connects the company's data cloud to Google Drive, Salesforce Data Cloud via Zero Copy, Workday and other enterprise vendor platforms, aligning security controls, data masking and governance policies. It will be in public preview soon, the company said. 'There's so much that we take for granted about how things used to work that just aren't true anymore,' Ramaswamy said, pointing to the impact of AI on the enterprise in a keynote conversation with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. 'We'll be at a point next year where you can not only use a system to automate business processes or build these new products and services, but you can really say, 'I have this hugely important problem in my business, I will throw a ton of compute at it'… and the models will be able to go figure out things that teams of people on their own can't do,' Altman said. Big Tech's AI Ambitions Could Supercharge These Energy Stocks

U.S. data centers are expected to consume 65 gigawatts of power between 2025 and 2028, about 45 GW more than existing capacity can accommodate, according to Morgan Stanley. Due to a mix of regulatory and economic hurdles, analysts expect AI providers and data-center operators to deploy "temporary, mobile generation" solutions to meet surging demand. Companies that make fuel cells, mobile natural gas turbines, and small modular nuclear reactors are some of the potential beneficiaries of this next phase of the AI infrastructure data centers are expected to consume a massive amount of energy in the coming years, and meeting that need could be a boon to some investments, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley forecasts U.S. data centers will consume 65 gigawatts of power between 2025 and 2028, but available capacity could fall short by about 45 GW. To make up the difference, 'all potential 'de-bottlenecking' solutions will need to be drawn upon,' the analysts wrote in a note on Tuesday. Possible solutions, they say, include converting crypto mining operations into data centers, building data centers at large nuclear power plants, and constructing new natural gas-fired power plants. But all of that is easier said than done. First, the rising price of bitcoin could discourage miners from converting their mining facilities or selling excess power to data centers. Second, concerns about stressing regional power grids could compel regulators to mandate that new data centers not come online until additional power sources are connected to the grid. That's why Morgan Stanley expects to see hyperscalers and data-center owners adopt a 'bridge' approach, 'in which temporary, mobile generation is deployed' to address the regulatory and economic hurdles to quickly ramping power capacity. Small modular nuclear reactors are one solution that gives companies the flexibility they'll need. SMRs have the added benefit of providing reliable carbon-free energy that aligns with Big Tech's emission-reduction goals. However, small reactors are a nascent, "next decade technology," Morgan Stanley analysts said. For that reason, cloud hyperscalers like Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG), Amazon (AMZN), and Meta Platforms (META) increasingly have turned to existing nuclear infrastructure during the AI buildout of the past few years. Meta on Tuesday signed a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy (CEG), America's largest nuclear power provider, to sustain its AI. Constellation and Microsoft last year agreed to bring back online a reactor at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island. With SMRs still a ways off, new data centers are likely to rely on small, mobile natural gas generators from the likes of GE Vernova (GEV) and Caterpillar (CAT). Hyperscalers may also buy from fuel cell manufacturers like Bloom Energy (BE), whose electricity servers are a low-carbon way to convert natural gas, biofuel, or hydrogen into power. These fuel cells, the analysts said, offer the benefit of short lead times, reliable equipment, the ability to add redundant capacity in the event of a unit failure, and exceptional flexibility in terms of power output. 'We believe [Bloom Energy] could quickly increase manufacturing capacity to ~3 GW per year, with the potential for further increases in output if demand grows,' the analysts wrote. 'Bloom Energy is in our view one of the under-appreciated beneficiaries of the rapid growth in data center power demand globally.' Nvidia has soared 45% in 2 months. These forces are reviving the hype for Wall Street's favorite AI play.

Nvidia shares are up 20% in a month, reflecting a major rebound for the chipmaker. Shares were down as much as 31% year-to-date through April as tariffs rocked markets. Since April lows, the AI titan has been boosted by fresh catalysts that have revived investors' enthusiasm. Nvidia stock has embarked on a fresh rally thanks to four big catalysts that are generating new enthusiasm for artificial intelligence chip maker. The stock has climbed 20% over the last month. Since its most recent low in April, the move up is even sharper. After bottoming during the broader market sell-off caused by Donald Trump's tariff announcements, the stock is up 45%, a gain of about $1 trillion in market cap. The stock is up about 5% year-to-date. This embedded content is not available in your region. That latest rally follows a rough few months for Nvidia. Shares were down more than 30% year-to-date in early April as concerns swirled around export controls and Trump's tariffs, which complicated the chipmaker's business in China. While the stock has benefited from an easing of tariff-related headwinds that's also boosted the broader market, there are several company-specific forces driving the rally. Here is what's sparked the latest run of gains for the top chip maker. The Commerce Department did away with the Biden administration's AI diffusion rule in mid-May, removing restrictions on which countries Nvidia can sell AI chips to. Those restrictions have been a major overhang for Nvidia stock this year. At a recent tech conference, Ceo Jensen Huang told reporters that export controls have hurt Nvidia's business in China. "All in all, the export control was a failure," Huang said at the event. "The fundamental assumptions that led to the AI diffusion rule in the beginning, in the first place, have been proven to be fundamentally flawed." Nvidia announced a major partnership with Humain in May. The AI firm is controlled by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The deal involves Humain purchasing advanced semiconductors from Nvidia to create AI infrastructure in the nation. In the first phase of the project, Nvidia will send 18,000 GB300 Frace Blackwell AI supercomputer chips, the firm said in a statement. That partnership came shortly after Saudi Arabia pledged to invest $600 billion in various US industries, including AI and infrastructure. "Those 'allies' want to invest here in the USA and also get a hold of a TON of Nvidia chips for domestic AI factories. For Nvidia shareholders, it would seem that this repeal is great news and that the administration is reigniting the 'Sovereign Thesis,'" analysts at Melius Research wrote in a note last month. Nvidia's first-quarter results were once again strong. The chipmaker reported $44.06 billion in revenue, above analysts' estimates of $43.32 billion. Perhaps more importantly, however, Huang soothed investors who have been nervous about the impact of disruptions to business in China. On the earnings call, the company noted that it took a hit from China, but business is still basically booming. Huang slammed export controls, but he affirmed his faith in the Trump administration. "The president has a plan," Huang said to investors. "He has a vision, and I trust him." Deepwater Asset Management said last week that Huang's comment suggests that the chipmaker could be in a favorable position as trade negotiations between the US and China continue. "My best guess is Nvidia will be part of a broader trade agreement with China," analysts from the firm wrote. The AI hyperscalers like Meta Platforms and Microsoft don't appear to be pulling back on AI spending. Tech titans like Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon have pledged to spend more than $300 billion this year on AI-related capex. Apple, meanwhile, has said it would spend $500 billion over the next four years. "Q1 earnings from mega-cap tech companies have also reinforced AI investment visibility, with customers maintaining or increasing their 2025 capex plans," Angelo Zino, a senior equity analyst at CFRA Research, wrote in a note, adding that he believed Nvidia's growth in data centers would run on for at least the next two years.
