Petroleum Minister inspects LNG infrastructure in Ain Sokhna ahead of summer demand surge
Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawy conducted an inspection tour at Ain Sokhna's SUMED and Sonker ports to review infrastructure readiness for receiving additional Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) as part of Egypt's summer energy preparedness plan.
Joined by senior petroleum sector officials, Badawy assessed progress on critical projects supporting the import, regasification, and delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) into the national gas grid—an essential step in securing fuel for electricity generation during peak summer months.
The minister began his visit at the marine berth in SUMED port, where the FSRU Hoegh Galleon is currently docked. He observed the vessel's ongoing operations, which include LNG unloading, regasification, and injection into the national grid.
Badawy also inspected the newly completed second marine berth at SUMED, which has been under development since September of last year. Designed to host an additional regasification vessel, the berth is now 100% complete, with trial operations underway ahead of the FSRU's arrival. The project is considered a key component of Egypt's national strategy to enhance natural gas infrastructure.
The tour continued at Sonker port, where the minister reviewed progress on laying horizontal pipelines that will connect a future regasification vessel to the national grid. He also examined the installation of a 36-inch, 17-kilometer gas import pipeline, which will serve as a vital conduit for the third FSRU expected to dock at the site.
During the visit, Badawy received detailed briefings from Yasser Salah, Chairperson of GASCO, and Walid Lotfy, Chairperson of Petrojet. The two entities are collaborating on LNG infrastructure projects at both SUMED and Sonker ports.
GASCO led the engineering and technical studies, sourced materials and equipment, and provided project management. Petrojet executed the construction, which includes two high-capacity marine and onshore pipelines, and the installation of two massive 16-inch-diameter loading arms—among the largest globally—to ensure efficient regasified gas handling.
The SUMED project has been finalized and is fully operational in anticipation of the second FSRU's arrival. Meanwhile, construction continues at Sonker port to ready the infrastructure for the docking of a third regasification vessel.
These developments are part of a broader national effort to reinforce Egypt's natural gas supply chain and ensure stable electricity production during the high-demand summer period.

FSRU Energos Power arrives at Alexandria Port to boost summer gas supply
The Energos Power, a new Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) operated by US-based New Fortress Energy, has docked at the southern berth of the Tahya Misr terminal in Alexandria Port after arriving from Germany. The ship's arrival marks a key step in Egypt's strategy to secure natural gas supplies for power generation during the high-demand summer season. Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Kareem Badawi welcomed the vessel on Monday, accompanied by senior officials from the ministry and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS). The Energos Power is equipped to receive imported liquefied natural gas (LNG), convert it back into its gaseous form, and feed it directly into Egypt's national gas grid. Minister Badawi said the move aligns with the government's broader energy strategy aimed at maintaining electricity grid stability during peak usage periods. 'This second regasification ship is a result of recent discussions with the German government, both in Cairo and during my visit to Berlin last March,' Badawi noted. 'It reflects our continued commitment to expanding LNG import infrastructure and ensuring reliable energy supplies.' The new FSRU joins an existing regasification unit stationed at the SUMED Port in Ain Sokhna. EGAS has also signed contracts to lease two additional FSRUs, expected to arrive soon, which would bring the total number to four. According to the ministry, this expansion is designed to enhance the flexibility and efficiency of Egypt's gas supply chain, especially as domestic demand surges during the hotter months. Badawi emphasized ongoing coordination between the Ministries of Petroleum and Electricity, alongside other key stakeholders, to ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply throughout the summer. The Energos Power has a storage capacity of 174,000 cubic meters of gas. Following its arrival, Minister Badawi toured the vessel along with senior figures including Yassin Mohamed, EGAS Executive Managing Director; Moataz Atef, Assistant Minister and Spokesperson; Khaled El-Badry, Assistant Minister for Projects; Hossam Nabil, Head of Petroleum Sector Security; Waleed Lotfy, Chairperson of Petrojet; and Wael Lotfy, Chairperson of ENPPI. The Minister was received at the port by Ehab Salah, Chairperson of Alexandria Port Authority, and Abdelkader Darwish, Chairperson of the Egyptian Company for Multipurpose Terminals (EGMT).

Egypt mobile operators invest $2.7 bln in 5G rollout: Minister - Tech
Egypt's four mobile network operators have invested $2.7 billion in 5G spectrum and licenses since 2019, reflecting growing investor confidence in the country's digital strategy, according to Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat. Speaking at the 5G Technology Forum in Cairo on Monday, Talaat said the telecoms sector had significantly developed over the past decade and called 5G 'a qualitative leap' in how people work, live and connect. The event was organized by public policy firm Moharram & Partners and attended by ambassadors and representatives from the US, European Union (EU), Japan and major tech firms. Talaat noted Egypt's spectrum strategy was developed in line with international standards, citing the country's hosting of the World Radiocommunication Conference in 2019. Massad Boulos, senior adviser for Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs to US President Donald Trump, said the forum showed growing cooperation with Egypt and called for increased investment across Africa. "Such conferences and companies represent a fundamental pillar for expanding cooperation with our Egyptian partners, as well as our partners in the EU, Sweden, Japan, and Finland," he added. US ambassador Herro Mustafa Garg stated that 5G was about 'reliable, secure networks' supporting everything from smart cities to advanced healthcare. "This forum is not just about faster internet; it is about building reliable and secure networks that can support everything from smart cities to advanced healthcare. American companies are ready to work alongside Egypt to provide the innovative and secure infrastructure that this country deserves," Garg said. Moharram & Partners CEO Sherif El-Badawy described the forum as a strategic step toward aligning public and private efforts in Egypt's digital transformation. 'The 5G Technology Forum is more than a technical event — it's a strategic platform bringing together decision-makers, industry leaders and government institutions to chart the future of Egypt's telecommunications sector,' stated Sherif El-Badawy, ambassador and CEO of Moharram & Partners. 'With participation from ambassadors representing the US, Japan, and several European countries, the forum fosters meaningful partnerships aimed at accelerating 5G deployment and positioning Egypt as a regional hub for digital innovation.' Telecom Egypt CEO Mohamed Nasr said the company was the first to receive a 5G licence through its retail brand WE, and would continue expanding services to meet the evolving demands of customers.
