Purdue ends McNeese's March Madness run 76-62 to get back to Sweet 16
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Trey Kaufman-Renn had 22 points and 15 rebounds, and the Purdue Boilermakers used a fast start to roll to a 76-62 win over McNeese in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
Fletcher Loyer added 15 points. C.J. Cox finished with 11 points for the Boilermakers (24-11), who advanced through the Midwest Region to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season.
The Boilermakers will meet the winner of top-seed Houston and eighth-seeded Gonzaga in the regional semifinal. In his 16 NCAA Tournament appearances with Purdue, coach Matt Painter is now headed to his eighth Sweet 16.
Sincere Parker had 17 points to lead McNeese (28-7). Javohn Garcia added 12 points as the Cowboys came up short in their bid to give the Southland Conference its first Sweet 16 team since Louisiana Tech in 1985.
McNeese came out in the 2-3 zone that was so successful during its first-round win over Clemson.
But Purdue hit 7 of its first 9 field goals and 3 of its first 4 3-point attempts to build an early double-digit advantage. A pair of three-plus minute scoring droughts by the Cowboys and runs of 10-0 and 9-0 by the Boilermakers helped Purdue grow its lead as high as 36-14 in the first half.
The Boilermakers led for all but 19 seconds.
Purdue shot 11 of 26 from the 3-point line for the game and held a 41-24 rebounding edge. Takeaways
McNeese: Poor shooting prevented the Cowboys from duplicating their first-round magic. But even with coach Will Wade likely departing, the two-time defending Southland champions have a lot to build on going forward.
Purdue: A year after making it to the national title game, the Boilermakers are getting some of their best production from Braden Smith and Kaufman-Renn, who both started in that game. Up next
As good as Purdue was offensively against the Cowboys, the Boilermakers will likely have to lean on their defense in the next round. Gonzaga entered the tournament with Division I's second-ranked scoring offense. Houston was the nation's fifth-ranked 3-point shooting team.

2025 Purdue Football Predictions: Boilermakers Ranked 99th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136
College Football 2025 Purdue Football Predictions: Boilermakers Ranked 99th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 10:24 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Purdue lands in my Ultimate 136. Purdue ranking: 99 Last year's ranking: 88 Top player: RB Devin Mockobee: Led Purdue with 138 rushes for 687 yards and 4 TDs; also caught 17 passes for 170 yards and 1 TD. [Purdue's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: Purdue will be better, but that's not saying a lot for a team that didn't beat a single FBS team last year. And after a year like that, you need to bust the program down to the studs and build something totally new. So, Purdue hired a program builder in Barry Odom. Odom flipped UNLV from a program that was looking like a longtime loser — eight straight losing seasons before he arrived — into a College Football Playoff contender in 2024 with its first double-digit winning season since 1984. ADVERTISEMENT The bet here is that Odom might be able to do what Curt Cignetti did at Indiana last year, but that will not be easy. Purdue plays Notre Dame, Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan and Indiana in Odom's first year. [Check out RJ Young's Ultimate 136 College Football Rankings here] Purdue Win Total Odds: Over 3.5 (+194) Under 3.5 (-245) Have an issue with my rankings? Spurs' Carter Bryant volunteered at a back-to-school event in San Antonio
A post shared by Spurs Way (@spursway) San Antonio Spurs rookie forward Carter Bryant was among the players who volunteered at a back-to-school event on Sunday, benefiting the local youth in the community. Bryant was joined by teammate Luke Kornet at the event, which assisted with school supplies, health screenings and enrollment. They were pictured passing out paper, binders, hats and other related materials while providing positive interactions with the children and adults in attendance. The offseason period is an excellent chance for incoming rookies to get to know their respective markets and communities. He also recently volunteered with Dylan Harper and Riley Minix by serving food at Haven for Hope, a homeless shelter. Bryant helped Arizona to the Sweet 16 last season, averaging 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and one assist on 37.1% shooting from 3-point range. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high-tying 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks on Jan. 27. The 19-year-old logged six appearances with the Spurs in summer league, averaging 7.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.2 assists on 28.6% shooting from the field. He wrapped up his stay with a 16-point, five-rebound performance on July 17. Bryant appears to have ingratiated himself well within the local community after joining the organization in June. He has had the opportunity to give back and likely picked up some new fans along the way.
