On the first day of reopening, nearly 500 visitors — including many children — entered the zoo. "Everything is normal and people are enjoying their visit," said Dr Yogesh Pratap Singh, zoo vet and deputy director.
Zoo director Vikas Yadav said 72 samples were sent in phases to National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal and all were confirmed negative. The second consecutive negative report was received on Jul 4 and govt clearance for reopening came on Jul 7.
"As per protocol, reopening was allowed only after two back-to-back negative reports. All necessary precautions and biosecurity measures are in place to ensure public and animal safety," Yadav added.
During bird flu outbreak, virus claimed lives of a tiger, a tigress, a leopard and a female wolf. A team from the Central Zoo Authority visited the park and identified ducks as likely source of the virus.
Meanwhile, tigress Mailani remains under observation. Although tested negative for bird flu two months ago, the tigress's condition hasn't improved and is immobile suffering from organ damage despite treatment," said Dr Singh.

U'khand districts on alert after bird flu confirmed in US Nagar, Bageshwar
Rudrapur/Bageshwar: Authorities in Udham Singh Nagar and Bageshwar have ordered swift containment measures after bird flu (H5N1 avian influenza) was confirmed in separate incidents, officials said on Saturday. In Udham Singh Nagar's Kichha area, more than 2,200 birds were culled following sudden deaths at a poultry farm in Kishanpur village on Thursday. Tests at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly confirmed the presence of the highly contagious H5N1 virus. District officials sealed a one-km radius around the farm, declaring it an "infected zone," with a 10-km "surveillance zone" set up around it. On Friday, Pulbhata police intercepted poultry-carrying vehicles and turned them back. Samples from other farms in the area have also been sent for testing. "We have sealed the 1 km infected zone and sanitised the area. Poultry transport has been banned and strict checking is under way at the Pulbhata border. People are advised to avoid consuming poultry products until further notice," said SDM Gaurav Pandey. The district administration also imposed a week-long ban on transportation of poultry, meat and eggs from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, where bird flu has been reported in Rampur district's Bilaspur block. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo "The administration is on high alert, and we are monitoring the situation round the clock," said district magistrate Nitin Bhadauria. District magistrate Ashish Bhatgain ordered culling of all poultry within a 1 km radius and banned supply and sale of poultry and eggs within a 10-km radius of Soli. DM Bhatgain convened a meeting of the district-level bird flu control committee and directed departments to work in coordination. "The situation is completely under control. These are precautionary steps being taken in public interest," he said. Chief veterinary officer Dr KK Joshi confirmed ongoing testing at IVRI, noting that toxicological tests revealed bird flu symptoms. Authorities have also suspended poultry transport, instructed safe disposal of carcasses, ordered monitoring of migratory birds and tightened checks at inter-district borders. In neighbouring Almora, where no cases have been detected so far, authorities have deployed 11 rapid action teams and one rapid response team, alongside public awareness drives. Residents have been advised to avoid poultry products, while market inspections are under way to prevent supply of poultry from outside the district. Prepare for infectious bird flu virus variant
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science's department of biochemistry have cautioned about a new threat on the horizon that requires urgent attention from the central and state health authorities. They have discovered that the currently circulating and dominant 2.3.4.4b variant of the H5N1 avian influenza virus has undergone genomic mutations that significantly increase the threat of humans getting infected with bird flu. It poses the threat of an outbreak that could be much more challenging to prevent or manage than the Covid pandemic. The IISc team analysed 7,000 protein sequences of the 2.3.4.4b H5N1 variant found in birds, 820 sequences from non-human mammals, and 35,000 human H1N1 (swine flu virus) and H3N2 (seasonal influenza virus) sequences. They identified rapidly changing amino acids in the sequences, used multiple tools to identify similar regions in various proteins, constructed an evolutionary trend to understand how the viral species diverged from their common ancestor over time, and detailed specific variations in all the proteins of H5N1 infecting non-human mammals and humans to conclude that the 2.3.4.4b variant is much more harmful to humans than its predecessors.
