Indian-Fijian woman caught on video using racial slurs in California hate incident

India Today22-04-2025

A disturbing video from Pinole, California, has gone viral, showing a woman of Indian-Fijian descent repeatedly using racist slurs toward a Black woman. The incident occurred on April 13 in the parking lot outside Pear Street Bistro and BMO Bank. In just 12 seconds, the woman—identified as 34-year-old Natasha Chand — was heard using the N-word nine times.Jazlyn Garcia and her sister were leaving the restaurant when they noticed Chand, a senior banker at BMO, allegedly giving them a strange look. According to the Daily Mail, Garcia and her sister confronted Chand and began recording. That's when Chand started mocking Garcia's appearance and shouting racial slurs. Police confirmed that the viral 15-second clip was just a small part of a longer video.advertisementPinole Police are now treating the confrontation as a hate incident. Sergeant Justin Rogers told the Daily Mail that the case will be referred to the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office for possible charges, which could include disturbing the peace and provoking a fight in public—potentially for both Chand and Garcia.
This is not Chand's first run-in with the law. She was arrested two months ago for allegedly shoplifting from an Ulta Beauty store in nearby Concord on four separate occasions. She currently faces charges including felony grand theft, second-degree burglary, and multiple counts of shoplifting. Notably, she reportedly appeared in court for that case just hours before the racist rant. The incident has triggered widespread outrage on social media, with many demanding stronger action against hate speech. Some confusion initially followed the video as incorrect reports misidentified Chand, but police have since confirmed her identity.advertisementAlso Read: Florida, Tennessee target immigrant driver's licenses with new laws

Probe launched against Tripura Cong leader for ‘defaming' CM

Agartala: Police on Monday launched a search against Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) spokesperson Md Sahajan Islam for alleged defaming narratives and expressions against chief minister Manik Saha on Sunday night in a Facebook live. The officer-in-charge of East Agartala police station, Rana Chatterjee, said Sahajan's deliberation has triggered political unrest and hurt the communal sentiment of the people. He had made derogatory comments on the professional and personal life of the CM that is completely illegal. "Indian law doesn't permit the citizen to make a personal attack on the head of a state," Chatterjee said, adding that a specific case has been registered against Islam, who is absconding, based on a complaint and police have also launched an investigation. He allegedly made several posts on social media in communal lines alleging that saffron cadres obstructed the celebration of Bakri Eid in several locations of the state, and in a few places, they stopped the transportation of cows.

Pak couple dead in flat, cops suspect murder-suicide

Navi Mumbai: A 45-year-old Pakistani national is suspected to have stabbed to death his wife, also a Pakistani, with a kitchen knife and then died by suicide at their rental flat in Kharghar on Monday. The wife had stab injuries on the neck, back and shoulder. Deepak Surve, senior inspector, Kharghar police, said the man, Notan Das alias Sanjay Sachdeva, was accused of assaulting his wife, Sapna Das (35), in front of some neighbours last month, but the woman refused to lodge a complaint against him. The couple arrived in India with their two minor children on long-term visa more than six months ago. Sapna's sister, Sangeeta Makhija, who is an Indian citizen, took a flat on rent for them in Dolphine Pride Society in Sector 34, Kharghar. Makhija was reportedly taking care of their financial needs. A senior police officer said following the recent hostilities between India and Pakistan, the couple was in the process of completing the administrative formalities of returning home. Surve said when the younger child returned from his coaching class on Monday, he found the main door locked from the inside. His sibling was not at home either. "There was no response to repeated knocks. The child sought the help of a neighbour, who entered the flat through a common balcony. The neighbour found the couple in a pool of blood," said Surve. After last month's alleged assault, Makhija had sought police's help but they expressed helplessness after Sapna refused to file a complaint.

AIYF leaders demand cancellation of IPL matches due to negative impact on youth and rise in betting

CPI affiliated All India Youth Federation (AIYF) Visakhapatnam district unit leaders and activists have demanded cancellation of IPL cricket matches across the country as they are spoiling the lives of the youth, especially students. The latest incident in which 11 youths died due to a stampede in Bengaluru is an example of the commercial sports programme and its direct impact on the youth and their lives, the activists said. Speaking to reporters at the Gandhi statue here on Monday, AIYF district president Y. Rambabu and secretary Achyutharao said that corporate companies have spoiled cricket by luring players with money to create a special cricket division called IPL. It has become a business event of these corporate bigwigs. In the name of sports, these IPL owners are running a sports programme where the youth and students are targetted. The youth are addicted to this commercial entertainment programme, and suffer huge financial and career losses, they added. In those days, government authorities used to organise One Day International (ODI) matches between countries, and the players and matches were entirely from a particular country, so those players inspired Indians. But in the case of these IPL matches, there are rivalries with Indian players when they represent different IPL franchises. They lamented that this creates an unhealthy situation in the minds of the youth. More importantly, during IPL matches, the youth fall for cricket betting. They said that many middle-class people are suffering from this evil act.
