Malaysia Proposes General Border Committee To Resolve Thailand-Cambodia Conflict
He said, if agreed upon in negotiation, leaders of the two countries should then welcome the proposals put forward by the committee.
'This is because they both (Thailand and Cambodia) want the other side to apologise first, so I suggest that they use the General Border Committee mechanism...because each has its strength and they just don't want to give in,' he told reporters after officiating the Besut UMNO Division meeting here today.
Mohamad said he had and would always be in touch with his counterparts, namely Maris Sangiampongsa of Thailand and Prak Sokhonn of Cambodia, to ask for the dispute to stop.
'I have asked them to stand down so that a ceasefire can be held as soon as possible, because the two countries are friends, neighbours and have long-standing family ties. We need to find a solution together through dialogue and diplomatic channels.
'So Insya-Allah I will try to contact them again and also some friends there (in Thailand and Cambodia) who have influence,' he said.
Meanwhile, Mohamad said Wisma Putra had already issued a ban on Malaysians in both countries from going to or approaching the troubled areas.
He said the Malaysian embassies in Bangkok, Thailand and Phnom Penh, Cambodia, were also always open for Malaysians to report any problems, including those related to the conflict.
Media previously reported that Thai and Cambodian troops clashed last Thursday in a disputed border area, with both sides pointing fingers at each other over who was considered to be the initiator of the latest confrontation.

Vietnam, Malaysia Prime Ministers Discuss Regional And Bilateral Issues In Phone Call
HANOI, July 30 (Bernama-VNA) -- Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a phone conversation on Wednesday to discuss regional developments and bilateral cooperation, according to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA). During the conversation, Anwar briefed the Vietnamese leader on Malaysia's initiatives as ASEAN Chair to address escalating tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border. He emphasised Malaysia's commitment to promoting dialogue and ensuring solidarity and unity in handling the issue. Anwar called on Cambodia and Thailand to exercise restraint, refrain from the use of force, and resolve differences peacefully and satisfactorily in accordance with international law, the UN Charter, the ASEAN Charter, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. bootstrap slideshow Chinh, for his part, expressed appreciation for the frequent exchanges between the two leaders on matters of mutual concern, stating they reflected the growing political trust between Vietnam and Malaysia, which exemplifies the spirit of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He hailed the efforts by Anwar, as well as Malaysia, the ASEAN Chair this year, in promoting the settlement of the Cambodia–Thailand border tensions. He specifically highlighted the July 28 meeting organised between the Cambodian Prime Minister and the Acting Thai Prime Minister, which led to a ceasefire agreement—the first positive step towards controlling the escalation of conflict between the two countries. Vietnam always supports and stands ready to join ASEAN's efforts and work closely with Malaysia in addressing regional issues while upholding the bloc's solidarity, he said, highlighting that Vietnam is prepared to send representatives to ASEAN-led mechanisms to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire and to provide humanitarian assistance to affected people in both countries. Regarding bilateral cooperation, the two Prime Ministers agreed to continue exchanges aimed at strengthening trust and implementing measures to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Priority areas include enhanced collaboration in innovation, science and technology, and energy sectors, with particular focus on power transmission projects connecting Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore to form the ASEAN power grid.

Fadhlina rubbishes claim matriculation inferior to STPM
Labis MP Pang Hok Liong had asked if the government was prepared to abolish the programme to address 'public suspicions' that it is of a far lower standard than the STPM examination. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Education minister Fadhlina Sidek has dismissed suggestions to abolish the matriculation programme, and denied claims that it is inferior to the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination. Fadhlina said the matriculation programme remained a recognised pre-university pathway, with graduates accepted by both local and international universities. 'The qualification is recognised by 58 foreign institutions, including 26 listed among the world's top 100 in the world university rankings. 'These include Cambridge University, University College London, the University of Sydney and Kyoto University,' she said in a written parliamentary reply. Fadhlina said matriculation graduates have also been eligible for Grade 29 executive posts in the civil service since 2017, in line with a 2016 circular. She said this broad recognition by universities and the public sector reflected the programme's quality and relevance. 'Therefore, questions on the standard of the matriculation programme do not arise at all,' she added. The minister was replying to Pang Hok Liong (PH-Labis), who asked if the government was prepared to abolish the programme to address 'public suspicions' that it is of a far lower standard than the STPM examination.
