LPPKN to seek additional funding as demand for fertility treatment exceeds target
KOTA BHARU: The National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) has received applications from over 1,700 couples for the Fertility Treatment Aid and Infertility Advocacy (BuAI) initiative, since its launch in February this year, exceeding the initial target of 1,300 couples.
Its chairperson, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, said in the light of this development, LPPKN plans to seek an additional allocation from the government to meet the growing demand.
'We introduced this programme to help couples facing fertility issues by providing free assistance through a government subsidy of RM2,000, for two cycles of intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment. As we know, the cost of fertility treatment can be extremely high, sometimes exceeding RM50,000.
'The response so far has exceeded our target, so we will raise this matter with the ministry to request additional funds in the future,' she told reporters after officiating the state-level 2025 Mother's Day celebration here, today.
At the event, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) scientist Prof Dr Wan Iryani Wan Ismail, who has garnered more than 50 accolades throughout her career, was named the state's Anugerah Inspirasi Ibu recipient.
Rohani said that, so far, several couples have successfully conceived and are expecting their firstborn by the end of this year.
She advised married couples under the age of 35, who have yet to conceive, not to give up, as they are eligible to receive treatment at four LPPKN Subfertility Clinics and the LPPKN Fertility Clinic (Full Paying Patient), located in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Sarawak and Penang.
Meanwhile, Rohani said the 2024 Mother's Day survey revealed that nine out of ten mothers feel their responsibilities today are far more challenging, compared with the past, due to several factors, such as the cost of living, work demands, financial struggles, and lack of personal time.
'Various initiatives are being implemented by the government, under the National Women's Policy 2025-2030, and through programmes under the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, including Kasih Ibu Tunggal, skills incubator for single mothers, MamaCare, and Wanita Bangkit.
'LPPKN also offers grants to parties interested in conducting research on the challenges faced by young mothers, so that we can better address their needs,' she said.

SUPP Lambir to host health awareness carnival on June 15

MIRI (June 7): The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Lambir branch will host a health check awareness carnival on Sunday, June 15, at its premises located at Lot 563, Block 5, Lambir Land District, Jalan Tukau, from 8.30am to 1pm. Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia, Dato Lukanisman Awang Sauni, is expected to officiate the event, which aims to raise public awareness on the importance of regular health screenings and provide health services to residents in Bakam, Tukau, and surrounding areas. The initiative is jointly supported by both private and public agencies, including the National Population and Family Development Board Malaysia (LPPKN) through Klinik Nur Sejahtera, the Ministry of Health's Department of Dentistry, International Optical Co., Best Hearing Aid Centre Miri, and Amcal Pharmacy Sdn Bhd. Queen Visits Hospis Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, today visited Hospis Malaysia, a charitable organisation that provides palliative care to patients suffering from chronic illnesses, such as cancer and kidney problems. The visit was a specially arranged event in conjunction with the official birthday of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. During the visit, Raja Zarith Sofiah spent more than two hours meeting patients receiving treatment at the centre, in addition to donating RM30,000 to Hospis Malaysia. Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is Bandar Tun Razak Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister of Health Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Health Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Suriani Ahmad and Hospis Malaysia chief executive officer Ednin Hamzah. Meanwhile, in her speech, Raja Zarith Sofiah said that she decided to visit Hospis Malaysia because she felt that there were still many Malaysians not aware of the importance of palliative care for family members. 'Hospis Malaysia can help provide palliative care, which is supportive care for patients with chronic illnesses. 'The responsibility of doctors and nurses at Hospis Malaysia is to provide advice and support to patients and their families, such as visiting and treating patients at home and to ease the patient's pain with effective medications,' said Her Majesty. Raja Zarith Sofiah said she became aware of palliative care since the late 1990s when the Johor Bahru Rotary Club often organised visits to homes of chronic patients, prompting Her Majesty to also become a volunteer and visit the patients at their homes. "Whenever there are seminars on palliative care, I will attend those seminars, and that was when I met Dr Ednin and palliative specialists from other countries," said Her Majesty.
