India has formally opened the race to build its first indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter, the AMCA. In a key move to modernise the Air Force and cut foreign reliance, the government has invited Indian defence firms to bid for development. The project will involve a competitive industry partnership model and aims to deliver six squadrons by 2035. With rival China racing ahead in aerial capabilities, the AMCA is central to India's long-term security and defence self-reliance.

AMCA: Built in phases, designed for the future
What will the AMCA bring to the table?
India has launched an open call for domestic defence companies to help build its first home-grown fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) formally uploaded an expression of interest (EOI) on Wednesday to identify firms capable of co-developing and manufacturing the aircraft's prototypes, and assisting in its flight testing and certification. This move comes at a time when the Indian Air Force (IAF) is facing a serious shortfall in operational fighter squadrons. The count has dropped to 31, far below the sanctioned strength of 42. Meanwhile, China has already deployed its fifth-generation J-20 fighters and is reportedly advancing two sixth-generation prototypes, the J-36 and J-50.The Ministry of Defence has approved a competitive execution model for the AMCA programme, ensuring both public and private companies are eligible. This breaks from the long-standing assumption that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India's state-run aircraft builder, would lead the programme.Defence Minister Rajnath Singh cleared the industry partnership framework on 27 May. 'Reputed Indian companies experienced in aerospace and defence sector with capability to absorb the design of AMCA and have adequate experience in the field of development & engineering, manufacturing, equipping, integration, testing, quality management, customer support etc will be shortlisted,' the EOI document stated. The ADA, under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will oversee the execution. The EOI also confirms that applicants may apply as a single company, joint venture or consortium, provided they are compliant with Indian laws and regulations. The AMCA contract is set for a maximum duration of eight years from the effective date. The shortlisted entity will need to set up a dedicated manufacturing facility to support eventual mass production.A pre-EOI briefing will be held in the first week of July 2025. The deadline for submissions is 16 August 2025. As per the current roadmap, the first prototype is expected to take flight by 2029. Full development should wrap up by 2034, with production likely to begin a year later. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), headed by the Prime Minister, approved the AMCA's design and development in 2023 at a cost of around ₹15,000 crore. This includes building five twin-engine prototypes.Firms likely to show interest include Tata Advanced Systems, Larsen & Toubro, Adani Defence and Aerospace, and the Mahindra Group. HAL, though no longer the guaranteed frontrunner, remains in strong contention. The AMCA execution model is expected to unlock new opportunities in India's aerospace ecosystem, helping build long-term industrial capacity and reducing import dependency. For the IAF, it offers a leap forward in capability—especially as the regional security environment grows more complex.China has already placed its J-20 stealth fighters into active service. It is also producing the J-35, which Pakistan is reportedly considering buying. This gives the India-Pakistan-China theatre a new dimension, with stealth aircraft rapidly becoming the new baseline for air superiority. While India has been offered foreign fifth-gen fighters—including the US F-35 and Russia's Su-57—New Delhi has chosen to stick with its indigenous plan. 'America is paving the way to provide India the F-35 stealth fighters,' said US President Donald Trump in February. Russia earlier this year proposed joint production of the Su-57 in India.India, however, has not taken up either offer. The AMCA is being developed in two distinct phases. The initial Mk-1 version will be powered by the American F-414 engine and will form the first two IAF squadrons. The Mk-2 variant will follow, featuring a more powerful engine developed in India with foreign collaboration. This second version will form the remaining four squadrons.By 2035, India plans to deploy six squadrons—roughly 120 aircraft. These jets are expected to become the backbone of the IAF's future force structure. The AMCA is envisioned as a 25-tonne swing-role fighter, capable of both offensive and defensive missions. Its stealth features are aimed at reducing radar detection. Internal weapon bays, super-cruise capability, 360-degree situational awareness, advanced avionics, and next-gen mission computers are all part of the design. Its ability to fly at supersonic speeds without afterburners will give it both range and endurance. And with all weapons housed internally, the aircraft will have a minimal radar footprint, crucial in modern warfare. This tender marks one of the biggest openings for Indian aerospace firms to shape the future of national defence. With a defined timeline, significant financial commitment, and a clear roadmap to production, the AMCA programme offers high reward—but demands high capability. The AMCA is not just about a jet. It is about building long-term self-reliance, enhancing industrial capacity, and sending a message that India intends to lead in next-generation defence technologies.(With inputs from Reuters)

Fintechs should see agri, rural areas as new markets, not just social responsibility: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called on India's fintech companies to view the country's agriculture sector and rural areas as more than just a social responsibility, saying they were an opportunity to 'create new markets'. 'Agriculture and rural areas need more innovations so that farmers will have to be connected to the markets better. Every fintech firm should view rural India as a fertile ground not just as a social responsibility but as an opportunity to create new markets. And you'll know from the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies that in the rural area today demand is reviving and sustaining itself and it is there that we need to have greater participation from our side,' the Finance Minister said on Wednesday at the Digital Payments Awards 2025, hosted by the Ministry of Finance's Department of Financial Services. Sitharaman also said fintechs should participate more when it comes to providing credit to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The Finance Minister said many other countries could only dream about the speed with which Indian companies were innovating in the digital payments space, with even several advanced countries not making progress at the same pace. 'There are several countries which appreciate and equally ask us if there can be an interaction which can be enabled,' Sitharaman said. A host of companies won at the Digital Payments Awards, including Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, and UCO Bank in the public sector bank category and HDFC Bank, City Union Bank, and IDFC FIRST Bank among private banks. In the small finance and payments bank categories, Equitas Small Finance Bank and India Post Payments Bank were named winners. Among fintechs, Whatsapp Meta, Navi, and Mobikwik won joint first place in the third-party app providers category, while PhonePe, Paytm, and Google Pay were awarded the top three places in the offline digital payments acceptance infrastructure category. 'Push the boundaries' While lauding the 'light-touch regulation, heavy encouragement' approach, the Finance Minister said India still needs 'a bulk of its population' to benefit from financial inclusion. To become a developed country by 2047, Sitharaman called on those in attendance to 'push the boundaries'. 'You have set pioneering targets, achieved them. But now we need to take it further and set standards,' she said. Noting that the fintech adoption rate in India was 87 per cent as against 67 per cent globally, the Finance Minister said nearly Rs 44 lakh crore had been transferred through Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) since 2014, resulting in savings of Rs 3.48 lakh crore. Going forward, the Finance Minister said financial inclusion should be advanced even further, with regional languages playing a bigger role, strengthened by voice-based services. Account aggregators, she added, could unlock new possibilities, with the number of entities on the account aggregator platform rising to nearly 700 as of March 2025 from 24 three years ago. Sitharaman also highlighted the need to improve literacy and cybersecurity, with solutions needed to ensure people don't fall prey to being 'digitally arrested' or that fly-by-night operators don't take away their money. 'We need a set of fintech companies which are constantly working on giving solutions for the newer challenges which are arising.' Speaking earlier at the awards, M Nagaraju, Secretary, Department of Financial Services, lauded the accomplishments of Unified Payments Interface as a mode of digital payment, saying its success had crossed borders as it was live in seven countries, namely Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and the UAE. Nagaraju echoed Sitharaman's priorities for the future, naming deepening digital payment adoption across sectors and geographies, strengthening cybersecurity and fraud prevention frameworks, promoting digital and financial literacy at the grassroot level, and 'ensuring that digital payments remain inclusive, secure, and citizen-centric'. Make for the world According to Sitharaman, India's fintech companies and their innovations have the potential to become global public goods that can benefit other emerging and developing economies, which would open new markets for Indian firms. 'Our players must aim to export our successful models abroad. We have the talent, we have the market scale, and we have also proven solutions. So fintech revolution in India will further flourish,' she said. Pointing out that India's fintech market is projected to grow to over $400 billion by 2028-29, Sitharaman said the scale of opportunity is immense and that the sector's 'best chapters are yet to be written'. G7 Summit: India, Canada re-engage, revive trade talks after 2 years

India and Canada on Wednesday decided to take 'calibrated' and 'constructive' steps to reset their relationship and restore stability in bilateral ties. As a first move, the two sides agreed to resume negotiations on an interim trade agreement after a nearly two-year pause and to appoint new high commissioners to each other's capitals. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mike Carney met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, where they also agreed to restart senior ministerial and working-level engagements across various domains to 'rebuild trust' and 'bring momentum' to the relationship, said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The Canadian government said the early return of high commissioners was aimed at serving citizens and businesses in both countries. It was Modi's first in-person meeting with Carney, who retained office after Canada's recent general elections. India-Canada ties deteriorated following the June 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, with then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleging a potential Indian link to the case. In October, India recalled its high commissioner and five other diplomats after Canadian authorities suggested their involvement. India also expelled an equal number of Canadian diplomats. Against the backdrop of a thaw in relations following Carney's election in March, the two leaders reaffirmed respect for the rule of law and their commitment to upholding the 'principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity'. 'The leaders also discussed the importance of restarting the stalled negotiations on the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA), with a view to paving the way for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). They agreed to task their respective officials to engage further in this regard,' the MEA said. Modi and Carney agreed to direct their respective officials to begin discussions for an interim trade deal, which will be followed by a comprehensive agreement. India and Canada had formally re-launched CEPA talks in March 2022 to boost trade and investment flows. The EPTA was to serve as a transitional step toward the comprehensive pact. Talks were suspended in September 2023 amid political tensions, even though negotiations were at an advanced stage and both sides had hoped to conclude the agreement by year-end. Despite the strain, India's exports to Canada remained strong, reaching $4.2 billion in FY25, a 9.8 per cent increase year-on-year. Major exports included medicines, garments, diamonds, chemicals, gems and jewellery, seafood, engineering goods, rice, and electrical equipment. Canada accounted for less than 1 per cent of India's total exports. Imports from Canada fell 2 per cent to $4.4 billion in FY25. India's dependency on Canadian imports remains low at 0.6 per cent of total inbound trade, primarily comprising pulses, crude oil, fertilisers, aircraft and aviation equipment, diamonds, and bituminous coal. The MEA said the Modi-Carney meeting provided both sides an opportunity for frank and forward-looking discussions on the relationship and next steps. The leaders expressed a desire to pursue a 'constructive and balanced' partnership grounded in mutual respect for each other's concerns and sensitivities, bolstered by strong people-to-people ties and economic complementarities. They also discussed future cooperation in clean energy, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, LNG, food security, critical minerals, higher education, mobility, and supply chain resilience. The leaders reaffirmed their shared interest in promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific, the MEA said.
