Confronting food insecurity at SA universities during Mandela Month
Contrary to the stereotype of universities as bastions of privilege, studies show a different – and often grim – reality for many South African students.
At universities across the country, levels of food insecurity range from 11% to 38% , which means a significant portion of our future leaders are trying to study on an empty stomach or are distracted from their books by worries over where their next meal will come from.
As South Africa and the world commemorate Mandela Month and emulate the spirit of giving that characterised South Africa's first democratically elected president, it is an opportune time to throw a renewed spotlight onto a silent crisis that many of us are not even aware of.
Food insecurity is not just about empty stomachs: it impacts mental health, concentration, attendance, retention and even dropout rates. For those who have enough to eat, the benefits are clear: students who are not hungry are nearly twice as likely to progress academically.
For the up to 38% facing a degree of food insecurity, lack of adequate nutrition deepens the cycle of inequality, especially among African and first-generation students, undermining the very mission of higher education as a ladder for social mobility.
As higher education institutions, in partnership with government, corporate donors and the general public, we need holistic, collaborative and sustainable solutions to help all our students focus on their primary task: gaining the education and skills needed to help steer our country and continent into a brighter future. Some ideas include:
Scale up and destigmatise food support : We should expand programmes like the University of Pretoria's Student Nutrition and Progress Programme (SNAPP), which includes the distribution of food parcels as well as vouchers for hot meals to bring relief directly to students on campus who need help with access to nutritious food.
Research has shown many students are hesitant to apply for help because of the stigma attached to food programmes, so we must normalise participation through discreet access and inclusive promotion.
Institutionalise campus food systems : We must establish permanent food gardens, student-run dignity kitchens and farmers' markets to increase access to fresh, affordable food. We should also partner with businesses and NGOs to leverage existing models for coordinated, sustainable delivery.
Unlock systemic support : Urgent reform is needed concerning National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) disbursements to ensure that allowances (especially for food) are adequate and paid timeously. We must also advocate for national policy that guarantees the right to food for students, with dedicated budgets, legislation and accountability.
Turn surplus food into nourishment : We must partner with non-profit organisations whose core business is the re-directing of good quality surplus food (10 million tonnes are wasted annually, yet 30 million South Africans face food insecurity) into nutritious student meals.
Monitor, evaluate and advocate : We should run a national survey to probe student food insecurity, with transparent data to inform targeted interventions and encourage cross-sector dialogue, from learners to policymakers, building on initiatives like the Access to Food for Students Project.
As we commemorate Mandela Month, I make a renewed call to all who can help our students, whether through an individual or corporate donation of funds or food, or through your assistance in creating the legislation and/or NSFAS reforms needed to ensure no student goes hungry.
Members of the public who can donate can approach a university of their choice and ask about student nutrition programmes and ways of making donations, whether in cash or kind.
By sacrificing food for fees or transport, many of our students lose the focus, energy and dignity essential to learning. As stewards of their futures, we must commit to systems that allow every student to thrive, starting with what they need most: their next meal.
Let this Mandela Month mark the beginning of a movement: each food parcel, scholarship and advocacy effort bringing us closer to the promise of equitable, hunger-free learning spaces.
The University of Pretoria is running its annual UP Giving Month campaign during July to support its Student Nutrition and Progress Programme (SNAPP) and the Vice Chancellor and Principal's Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to struggling 'missing middle' students.

Beyond stress: Understanding and preventing burnout before It breaks you
Burnout is not just a buzzword, it is a silent epidemic that is eroding wellbeing, productivity and quality of life among the workforce, and high achievers appear to be especially at risk. A clinical psychologist and occupational therapist of Netcare Akeso Umhlanga's Centre of Psychotherapy Excellence (COPE) team unpacks the troubling consequences of unmanaged chronic work stress, emphasising that prevention is always better than rebuilding after crises. 'Burnout is a state of exhaustion – physically, emotionally and mentally – caused by excessive and continued stress. The three main characteristics of burnout are exhaustion, cynicism – which is a negative or detached attitude – and decreased motivation and productivity over a sustained period,' explains Claudia van Blerk, Netcare Akeso Umhlanga COPE Manager and occupational therapist. The World Health Organisation recognises burnout as an occupational phenomenon, rather than a medical diagnosis. The Gallup State of the Global Workplace 2025 Report noted a six point decrease in South African employee engagement levels, with less than a quarter (23%) of respondents feeling engaged at work, and more than a third (36%) reporting daily stress, both key components observed in people suffering from burnout. Very often, people on the verge of burnout may notice that the same tasks take much longer to complete than before, and even putting in additional working hours often does not translate into achieving what was previously manageable within working hours. Burnout symptoms may include: • Fatigue • Decreased effectiveness in daily tasks • Frequent physical illnesses or injuries • Negative thoughts • Low mood • Lack of motivation 'Burnout may trigger or worsen mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Also, burnout that is prolonged or not addressed can very quickly lead to exacerbation of anxiety and depressive-related symptoms,' adds clinical psychologist Vashnie Sithambaram. 'These may include, but are not limited to, depressed mood, low motivation, isolation, negative thoughts, constantly feeling on edge or worrying, easily triggered by situations in the environment, as well as psychosomatic symptoms, such as body aches or flu-like symptoms.' She explains that psychosomatic symptoms refer to physical symptoms that are induced by emotional distress, further compromising a person's ability to meet the demands of their daily life. 'If we look at burnout from a systemic point of view, it has a ripple effect. No person exists in isolation, and eventually, the burnout symptoms can cause a person to become disconnected from those around them. Often, this can lead to interpersonal challenges and even conflicts, further exacerbating the situation.' How long does it take to recover from burnout? 'There is no defined recovery period for burnout, as this is unique to the individual and may depend on various factors,' Sithambaram says. These factors may be determined by asking the following questions: • How long have the burnout symptoms been present? • Does the person consistently find themselves in situations that require them to work under stress? • Is the person seeking therapeutic assistance? Some therapies can be short-term, and others may require long-term work to address underlying issues that could increase a person's vulnerability to developing burnout in the future. Van Blerk adds that once the point of burnout has been reached, it can be difficult to manage or recover without external intervention. 'In-patient treatment may be recommended, as the multi-disciplinary healthcare professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists and occupational therapists, can help address the underlying concerns holistically. 'Both group and individual sessions are beneficial for people recovering from burnout, although initially it may seem daunting to engage. We find that encouraging participation as much as possible is essential to getting the best out of admission for burnout and the resources available,' she says. 'Some typical therapy goals that we work towards in recovery from burnout include developing coping skills, identifying triggers, helping to change negative thought patterns and treating mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression and others that can either contribute to burnout or be exacerbated by chronic stress,' she says. 'Once a person has been discharged from in-hospital care, it is vital to continue care on an individual outpatient basis after discharge. Family sessions could also help address underlying triggers or issues that have developed due to the burnout symptoms,' Van Blerk says. Sithambaram urges working people to consider their work-life balance as a wellbeing priority to prevent burnout from developing. Psychologist's tips for protecting against burnout • Surround yourself with a strong support system, both at work and among your friends and family. • Don't skip self-care activities: Take time to rest, enjoy activities that bring out your creative side, exercise, spend quality time with family, and set aside solo time for hobbies and journaling. • Take care of your physical health and wellbeing, as this directly impacts your mental health and ability to cope with the demands of everyday life. • Time management: Prioritise what is important and tackle the difficult tasks first to avoid procrastination and reduce the constant worry about work not completed • Seek professional support if needed. Honouring medical pioneers: Insights from UKZN's living legends panel
The University of KwaZulu-Natal's Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine this week hosted its annual 'On the Couch with Our Alumni Living Legends' panel discussion to honour four industry giants within the medical field. The living legends who were part of the panel were Dr Tshepo Motsepe who is South Africa's first lady, a physician, businesswoman, and patron of the Early Care Foundation; Professor Bilkish Cassim, an esteemed rheumatologist, academic and inaugural chair of geriatrics at UKZN; Dr Diliza Mji, founder, shareholder and director of the Busamed Group and Dr Warwick Morris, a renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon with over five decades of service. The purpose of the gathering was to honour the alumni and teachers of the medical school. Mji said when he left medical school as a specialist to go into private practice, he felt intimidated about going into practice because, at the time, there wasn't an African person in Durban who was in private practice as a surgeon. "Forced to earn a living for my family, I was forced to go to Zimbabwe to look for a job, but when they offered me a salary, I said I'm coming back home. "Practice itself then led me to go into business because I then found certain things that were happening in private practice that I was not happy about. I said one day I will do it differently and that's how I started Busamed," said Mji. Motsepe said she grew up and went to school in a rural village. "In those years you would hear about diarrhea. My mum was a midwife in the village. We used to receive an injection because of TB. There were so many deaths from TB that we got to learn about as a child. "There were so many diseases. If we had proactive ways to prevent children from dying," said Motsepe. She said after completing her internship she went to Zimbabwe on holiday and stayed on for two years and worked. "There were so many tropical illnesses, preventable illnesses, malnutrition and stunting. I later learnt there was a course I could do on maternal child health. Even now that is where I do most of my work with creches. These are owned by female entrepreneurs. That is the area where we've had the most effect of making sure that the children are in a safe and secure environment," said Motsepe. When asked what personal sacrifices and moments of resilience had shaped her path, Motsepe said at the age of nine she had to go to a boarding school after attending the rural school. "My dad did not want us to be exposed to Bantu education. My dad wanted us to get a better education. Every year in January, he used to fly to Cape Town with a lawyer and apply for us to go to a coloured school in the Eastern Cape. This was a Catholic convent. "I went at the same time with my sister. We used to spend five months of the year away from home. There was a lot of homesickness. The first day when we arrived my sister and I didn't even know English and Afrikaans," she said. She said they were thrown into an environment where outside the classes they spoke Afrikaans and the education was done in English. "But we had to cope. So we used to leave home in January, come back in June for three weeks and then go back again to the boarding school and come back in December for six weeks. That's the life that one led throughout. My younger brother was six years old when he went to boarding school and it was all to avoid bantu education. Those were the most difficult years," she said. Cassim said she has been at the university's medical school for 50 years. "To say that all my 50 years here were happy is not true. I've had some existential crises both as far as my professional work has been concerned and as well as my health. I think the two of them were related. "But I think for me what has been important is firstly to believe in yourself. Secondly is to understand that bad things happen to good people and that you're not so special that nothing bad should ever happen to you and that if something does happen to you, you are seen not only not by what happened to you but how you reacted to it," she said. Morris, who graduated from medical school in 1964, retired after 60 years in March this year. He said his initial attraction was to be an obstetrician, but after a 40-minute lecture in plastic surgery, that aroused his interest. Morris spent years training and gaining experience in plastic surgery in South Africa, the US and England. He said aesthetic surgery is on patients who are not ill, don't have a disease, don't have a deformity, they just have some aspect of their appearance about which they're unhappy. "So my philosophy towards them, I would say to them, I like to call this happiness surgery. It's all about making happy patients." SUNDAY TRIBUNE

‘Bloody' great milestone for Durban North blood donor
A DURBAN North resident has reached a remarkable milestone this month, celebrating 40 years of blood donation and completing his 215th unit, a contribution that may have helped save up to 645 lives. '40 years ago, on the 12th of July 1985, an icy cold winter's day in Johannesburg, I became a blood donor. Today, 12th July 2025, a chilly day in Durban, I am donating my 215th unit of whole blood,' said Greg Rodda. Rodda, whose blood type is O positive, began donating shortly before turning 21, inspired by his late father's example. Also read: Mandela Month food drive to support hungry children in north Durban 'As a child, I would watch my dad go and donate blood. When I came of age, it just felt like the natural thing to do,' he said. Looking back, Rodda says he never imagined he'd reach such a number. 'You don't know what life will throw at you. I never set out to hit a big number, but now that I've reached it, it feels like a good milestone,' he said. Over the years, his motivation has grown more personal. He recalls the moment his five-year-old daughter required a blood transfusion due to a burst ulcer, and another instance when a neonatal intensive care unit nurse rushed his blood to a clinic for a five-day-old baby in need. 'Those moments bring home just how critical blood donation is. You realise it's not just numbers, it's people, it's lives. I see it as something special I can do. What better way to give than with the gift of life?' For him, donating is not routine but something meaningful every time. 'I always consider it special. It's my way of giving back. You might not see who it helps, but you know it matters,' he said. 'There's really nothing to be afraid of. SANBS once had a poster of a baby in ICU, it read that the child's need is far greater than your fear. Cancer patients, accident victims are going through so much more than a needle prick.' Over the decades, Rodda has seen some changes to the process, particularly in the guidelines around donation frequency and eligibility due to tattoos. Yet his commitment has never wavered. He uses social media to encourage others to join him. Now, at 215 units, Rodda is aiming for the next big goal: 250. 'I'm going all out while I'm still strong.
