Bihar's Rs 100 crore highway an obstacle course, thanks to trees in middle of road
Intended to boost connectivity and ease congestion, the highway expansion under National Highway-83 (also known as NH-22) has instead become a nightmare for drivers.
advertisementOfficials say it's not incompetence but a bureaucratic standoff that led to the mess. During construction, the Public Works Department (PWD) sought clearance from the Forest Department to remove the obstructing trees. However, the Forest Department refused to grant a No Objection Certificate (NOC) unless the administration provided 14 hectares of compensatory forest land elsewhere in Jehanabad.
Unable to meet the demand, the PWD pushed ahead with construction-navigating the new road around the immovable trees."This situation has arisen due to the Forest Department not granting a No Objection Certificate. The road is still under construction and will be fixed soon," said Brajesh Kumar, Additional Collector of Jehanabad.
But things reached a boiling point on Monday, when photos of the tree-dotted highway began circulating on social media, triggering outrage and ridicule.
advertisementBut things reached a boiling point on Monday, when photos of the tree-dotted highway began circulating on social media, triggering outrage and ridicule. In response, the district administration filed an FIR against the construction agency for proceeding without proper forest clearance.Emergency steps are now being taken to avert disasters. Reflective tape has been wrapped around the trees, large sandbags placed at their bases, and painted metal drums strategically positioned to warn drivers-especially at night. The administration has also started barricading the affected stretch to ensure motorists don't crash into the greenery now doubling as deadly obstacles. When Aaj Tak, India Today's sister website, visited the site on Tuesday, bright warning drums were seen along the highway as part of the makeshift safety setup. But the central issue-the NOC deadlock-remains unresolved, and the trees continue to stand their ground, quite literally.- EndsTune InMust Watch

A world shattered, a family wiped out
Ayodhya/Lucknow: For over a year, Prahlad Gupta's niece was living with her maternal uncle in Sihagaon, pursuing her education with dreams of a brighter future. On Sunday morning, she was unaware that tragedy was about to strike. Her uncle's family left for darshan at the Prithvinath temple, a spiritual outing that turned fatal. Around 11 am, the devastating news reached her—not from family, but from her school captain, who informed her of the accident. What she didn't know until later was that her uncle Prahlad's younger brother Ramkaran, along with his entire family—wife Ansuya, son Shubh (7) and daughter Saumya (9)—perished in the crash. Also gone were Prahlad's wife Bina, his daughters Kajal and Rinki and his youngest brother Ramroop's wife and son. The family's grief deepened with the disappearance of Ramroop's 10-year-old daughter Rachna, who is feared drowned. Even as the Gonda district hospital conducted post-mortem examinations of the the 11 dead under the supervision of CMO Dr Rashmi Verma, the mourning village of Moti Ganj waited for the return of their loved ones' bodies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Global Indices Are on the Move — Time to Trade! Outside the postmortem house, silence and sorrow loomed. Inside Prahlad's home in Moti Ganj, wails echoed through the air, drowning the village in mourning. Neighbours tried to console the family, but many could not hold back their own tears. Among the deceased were also their neighbour Ramlallan Verma's wife Sanju (26) and sister Gudia alias Anju (20), who joined the family on the trip. Prahlad's son Satyam and daughter Pinky survived the crash with injuries, as did neighbour Ramlallan and the driver Sitaraman. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences and announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia compensation for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. "Govt stands with the bereaved families in this hour of grief," he said. "All possible assistance will be provided." As search operations continued with SDRF teams to find little Rachna, what remains is a family devastated—and a niece who will never return to the same home again. River Sal clean-up continues but no penalty for pollutersMore Infra Improvements On The Cards
Margao: While state govt has deployed floating aerators and automated gates worth crores to resurrect the dying river Sal, not a single polluter has faced penalties despite continuing contamination of the river, revealed legislative assembly records The stark contradiction was evident from the written reply by water resources minister Subhash Shirodkar in the ongoing monsoon session of the state assembly. Shirodkar's reply stated that enforcement was limited to 'requesting' the public health engineering department to stop unauthorised discharges. This lenient stance of govt on pollution enforcement stands in sharp contrast to its aggressive spending, largely on technological measures, to clean up the Sal. Since 2020, the state has already pumped in over Rs 40 crore into the Sal's revival. An automated water storage structure, with floating aerators, costing Rs 24 crore was built near the wholesale fish market in Margao. Bio-beds were installed to enhance parameters such as turbidity, colour, and odour, while electrically operated gates control water flow with precision. However, despite the adoption of technological solutions, the discharge of raw sewage and industrial waste into the river continues unabated. Sources pointed out that the National Green Tribunal 's 2018 order specifically mandated action against polluters, but five years later, Sal's restoration relies entirely on expensive downstream solutions rather than stopping contamination at the source. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Undo 'You can install all the aerators you want, but if sewage keeps flowing in, you're just creating an expensive fish tank,' said one observer familiar with the project. The upcoming Phase III of the Sal clean-up project, estimated at Rs 18 crore, promises more infrastructure improvements. This includes erecting chain link fencing alongside the Sal river near the wholesale fish market in Margao and putting in place a sedimentation process at the nullah mouth at various places to treat sewage in the Fatorda constituency.
