Jack Haynes hit his third County Championship century of the season to lead Division One leaders Nottinghamshire into a strong position on the third day of the match with Somerset at Taunton.Starting the day on 214-3 in reply to their opponents' first innings score of 379, the visitors ran up 509 all out, Haynes leading the way with a career-best 157, while Ben Slater fell early for 124, Ishan Kishan made 77 and Lyndon James 66.Jack Leach ended a tough day for Somerset's bowlers on an unhelpful pitch with hugely creditable figures of 6-121 from 53.2 overs, displaying exemplary accuracy as Notts steadily built a lead of 130. The hosts had to face one over before stumps and closed on 4-1, nightwatchman Matt Henry bowled by Liam Patterson-White's final delivery.Unbeaten on 34 overnight, Haynes' hundred occupied 176 balls and featured 11 fours and a six. It was just the innings his side required to first stave off any prospect of a significant first innings deficit and then build what could prove a match-winning advantage.Leach opened Somerset's attack at the start of play, bowling in tandem with off-spinner Archie Vaughan, and struck an early blow when Slater, having added only eight to his overnight score, aimed a back-foot forcing shot and edged a catch to wicketkeeper James Rew. It proved Somerset's only success before lunch, despite taking the second new ball at 238-4.Haynes went to a 92-ball 50 and found a more aggressive partner in Kishan, who quickly dispatched a delivery from Matt Henry over fine leg for six to bring 250 up. On 60, Haynes survived a confident shout for a catch behind off Leach, but it was a rare moment of alarm for Notts as they closed in on Somerset's total.By lunch, the scoreboard read 322-4, Kishan having just moved to a half-century off 83 balls, with four fours and two sixes. The pattern continued in the afternoon session, Haynes pulling a boundary off Vaughan to bring up the century partnership. Somerset then had two difficult chances to make a much-needed breakthrough as Kishan offered low diving chances to wicketkeeper Rew down the leg side off Kasey Aldridge and Craig Overton at slip off Vaughan.Notts looked set to collect a third batting point when moving to 347-4 with five balls remaining of the 110th over, but Aldridge prevented Kishan from scoring from any of them. It was a minor setback as Haynes went to his eighth first-class hundred, and third of the season, with a boundary off a leg-side full toss from Aldridge. The fifth-wicket stand was worth 138 when Kishan edged a delivery from Leach onto his front pad and presented a straightforward catch to Tom Abell at short-leg. James had a scare with only a single to his same when edging Leach through the legs of wicketkeeper Rew standing up to the stumps. That was as good as it got for Somerset as tea was taken with Notts 431-5 and leading by 52 runs. The final session saw James go to 50 off 87 balls before Haynes brought up his maiden 150, having faced 287 deliveries.Haynes finally fell lbw trying to sweep Leach with the lead just short of 100 and Patterson-White was then stumped pushing forward to Vaughan before the tireless Leach made it a five-for, turning a ball from on leg stump to force Brett Hutton to edge to slip.Farhan Ahmed departed to Vaughan for a duck and James edged a drive off Leach to slip, but by then it was Nottinghamshire's highest ever total at Taunton.ECB Reporters' Network supported by Rothesay

Wednesday's briefing: Doubts for Man City while promoted sides strengthen

Meanwhile, attention will turn to the Euro 2025 as it kicks off in Switzerland, although neither England nor Wales will be in action before Saturday. Pep Guardiola claimed it was 'too early to say' if Manchester City can be back in title contention next season after he watched them crash out of the Club World Cup with a shock defeat to Al-Hilal in the last 16. City dominated in the group stages but it all fell apart with some familiar defensive failings in the 4-3 extra-time defeat that sent them home. 'I don't know,' said City manager Guardiola afterwards when asked if his team had convinced him they could challenge next term. 'It's too early to say but I saw many, many good things that I didn't see in the past, especially from where we were.' Welcome to Sunderland AFC, Habib Diarra! ❤️🇸🇳 — Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) July 1, 2025 Promoted sides Sunderland and Leeds have been busy in the transfer market as they try to construct squads capable of surviving in the Premier League. Sunderland have paid a club record fee, reportedly £30million, to bring in 21-year-old Senegal midfielder Habib Diarra – who scored against England last month – from Strasbourg. Leeds, meanwhile, have made their second signing from Wolfsburg in the space of a fortnight, with defender Sebastiaan Bornauw following Lukas Nmecha in making the switch. Bornauw is Leeds' third signing of the summer, with Jaka Bijol the other new face. Elsewhere, Arsenal have signed goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from London rivals Chelsea, seven years after the Blues paid £71m to bring him in from Athletic Bilbao. On the eve of Euro 2025, Wales vice-captain Ceri Holland has revealed how she thought her tournament hopes had ended when she was carried off on a stretcher during their Nations League clash against Denmark in April. The Liverpool winger, 27, was in tears after suffering the injury that saw her leave the stadium in a protective boot but has recovered in time to be part of the squad that has travelled to Switzerland. 'I was very, very lucky. I probably felt the worst,' said Holland. 'With the Euros around the corner that's what was on everyone's minds. Those next 24 hours after the injury were tough, mentally they were very tough.' Holland has scored seven goals in 43 appearances from her wide berth and her Wales development at international level has been replicated on the club stage in the Women's Super League. 💭 Still thinking about that @TrentAA assist… 💭 — Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) July 1, 2025 Trent Alexander-Arnold registered his first assist for Real Madrid as he set up Gonzalo Garcia's decisive goal in their 1-0 Club World Cup win over Juventus. Garcia headed home his third goal of the tournament after 54 minutes to send Madrid into the quarter-finals. Kylian Mbappe was kept in reserve for Real, despite the France forward having recovered from illness to take his place in the matchday squad for the first time at the Club World Cup, but came off the bench in the final 15 minutes. Euro 2025 gets under way in Switzerland with the opening Group A fixtures. First up Iceland play Finland before the hosts take on Norway in the second game. National League side Morecambe appear set to enter administration on Wednesday after talks to end an impasse over a takeover deal failed to find a resolution.

EXCLUSIVE Revealed: How Ben Duckett went from bete noire to best in the world - England star's two key shifts behind rise from alcohol-fuelled mishaps and failed fitness tests to Bazball perfection

Words of contentment were not reserved solely for the performance itself as Ben Duckett reflected on the career-high moment that sent England into today's second Test against India with a 1-0 lead. 'I'm looking over at her right now, and just want to give her a cuddle. I've definitely realised there's more to life,' said Duckett, a smile softening towards his 11-month-old daughter Margot, stood on the Headingley outfield, yards away from where he had been flaying the Indian bowling attack earlier that afternoon.
