Phillies Reliever José Ruiz Heading to Rival Braves After Wavier Claim
Phillies Reliever José Ruiz Heading to Rival Braves After Wavier Claim originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Back on June 1st, the Phillies decided to juggle their bullpen by promoting No. 12 prospect Seth Johnson back to the majors. To make room for the starter-turned-reliever on the roster, Philly designated José Ruiz for assignment.

Ruiz, who is out of minor league options, was exposed to waivers, giving the other 29 clubs a shot at claiming him. One of them did.
The NL East Rival Atlanta Braves, who have their own bullpen woes this season, chose to pick up Ruiz. They will hope that the 30-year-old righty can somewhat return to form after starting off 2025 with several issues.
Ruiz is in his seventh full season of major league action. Last year with Philadelphia, he pitched to a respectable 3.71 ERA with 52 strikeouts and a 1.33 WHIP in 51 innings.
However, this spring has presented one challenge after another for Ruiz. He struggled to the tune of an ERA just under 5 through April, went on the 15-day IL, then came back to more struggles. He allowed five runs in his last outing to the Mulwaukee Brewers, prompting Philly to cut ties.

Ruiz joins a Braves club that has gone through it's share of former Philly arms. Hector Neris and Enyel De Los Santos both made the club out of spring training. Neris was cut after a terrible first week, while De Los Santos is still on board with a sub-3 ERA. Craig Kimbrel returned to Atlanta as well, but he only pitched one game for them before being DFA'd.

Atlanta's bullpen is right in the middle of MLB with a combined 3.83 ERA. If Ruiz can reset in the new environment, he could cause problems for his old club with the division still far from decided.

Braves React to Ozzie Albies' History Amid Season
Braves React to Ozzie Albies' History Amid Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Atlanta Braves made history in Milwaukee, not just because they snapped a seven-game losing streak or because Chris Sale struck out seven batters. Advertisement Yes, both of those things happened during Atlanta's 7-1 win, but the most memorable moment came from second baseman Ozzie Albies. Albies picked up two hits, scored a run, and in doing so, notched the 1,000th hit of his Major League Baseball career, a rare milestone few players ever reach. Following the game, the Braves celebrated their veteran infielder's achievement on social media with a simple but powerful message: "History made: 1,000 hits and counting." Albies' first hit of the night, and the 999th of his career, came in the sixth inning with a one-out single to left field. He was left stranded that inning. Then, in the eighth, he singled to left again to reach 1,000 hits. Teammate Eli White followed with a home run that scored Albies and extended the Braves' lead to 7-1. Advertisement The 28-year-old from Curacao has had a slow start to the 2025 season. Through 65 games and 250 at-bats, he's batting just .236, currently a career low. He's hit six home runs and driven in 24 runs so far this season. Ozzie Albies of the Atlanta BravesBrett Davis-Imagn Images In 2024, Albies dealt with injuries and was limited to just 99 games, though he still managed to collect 100 hits. Since signing with Atlanta in July 2013, Albies has spent his entire career with the Braves. Albies has built an impressive resume, including three All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger Awards, two All-MLB Second Team honors, and a World Series title from 2021. Ozzie Albies now ranks 50th on the all-time hit list among active MLB players. He trails Tommy Pham by 15 hits for the 49th spot. Just ahead in the chase are Cody Bellinger, who sits at 999 hits, and Juan Soto with 991. Advertisement Despite the win, the Braves have struggled overall. Heading into Tuesday, they sat at 28-37, placing them fourth in the National League East and 13.5 games behind the division-leading New York Mets. While Albies' personal milestone was a bright spot, the Braves will need more than individual achievements to turn their season around. Phillies Bullpen Plans for Deadline 'Contingent' on Aaron Nola's Health
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Philadelphia Phillies know they must add to their bullpen at the trade deadline. How they go about adding to it is still up in the air with over a month to go before July 31. There are plenty of options for them in hopes of continuing to compete in the National League East, but Matt Gelb of The Athletic reveals a lot of it comes down to Aaron Nola's health. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - MAY 14: Aaron Nola #27 of the Philadelphia Phillies walks to the dugout after being removed from the game in the top of the fourth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals during... PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - MAY 14: Aaron Nola #27 of the Philadelphia Phillies walks to the dugout after being removed from the game in the top of the fourth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals during game two of a doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park on May 14, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Cardinals defeated the Phillies 14-7. More"An MRI discovered a stress reaction in one of Nola's right ribs. He will be shut down from throwing for at least two weeks," wrote Gelb. "That timeline makes it unlikely that Nola throws another pitch for the Phillies before the All-Star break. It's a setback that could affect how the Phillies approach the trade deadline. Mick Abel, the rookie elevated to the rotation, has become even more important. The front office has entertained the idea of fortifying the relievers later this season by bumping a starter or two to the bullpen. But all of that is contingent on a healthy and effective Nola." Nola has been durable for most of his career to this point, which makes the timing of his injury even more significant. The Phillies have lost nine of their last 12 games and are beginning to lose ground in the NL East race. There's no timeframe on when Nola could return, and manager Rob Thomson pointed out when the injury occurred is unclear. "I have no idea," Thomson told reporters, per Gelb. "Because he doesn't really remember the moment that it happened. He just woke up one day, and it was sore." Philadelphia must make a decision soon on Nola as the deadline will be here sooner rather than later. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski won't want to potentially lose out on high-leverage relievers and squander a shot at the National League pennant and a World Series trophy.
