Central Trade Unions postpone nationwide strike to July 9 in view of ‘serious situation' in country
The Central Trade Unions (CTUs) on Thursday evening deferred their proposed strike on May 20 to July 9 in light of the disturbing situation prevalent in the country presently following the India-Pakistan conflict.
The decision to defer the strike was taken at the meeting of the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and Independent Sectoral Federations and Associations on Thursday, according to a statement.
The meeting also took note of the unfolding political developments in the country after the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam killing 26 innocent people, and the response of the Indian Armed Forces in their combat strike actions.
An official release from the Unions said, "Considering the situation in the country, it has decided to defer the All India General Strike scheduled on 20 May 2025. CTUs have decided now to hold the All India General Strike on 9 July 2025."
The release alleged, "CTUs have noted with serious concern that even when the country is facing such a serious situation, the Government of India is aggressively pushing through the implementation of the labour codes, increasing working hours and curbing the trade union rights."
It called for continuing the campaign about the strike among people.

Trade unions to hold rally today
Ranchi: Jharkhand's joint front of central trade unions (CTUs) and independent federations on Monday stated that in view of prevailing situation following Pahalgam incident and operation Sindoor , the general strike called on May 20 by their organisations to press for 17-point demands has been postponed to June 6. State level leaders of the CTUs and federations said that their organizations would, however, hold demonstrations and take out processions in Ranchi city on Tuesday. State general secretary of All India Trade Union Congress, Ashok Yadav, said, "The centre should not consider our decision to postpone the strike as our weakness. We would organize a more widespread protest on June 6." TNN All India Central Council of Trade Unions state secretary Subhendu Sen said, "Despite the call for the strike, the centre and several state governments have continued their attack on the workers. The central government has not even called the trade union for a meeting on the issues." Leaders of Indian National Trade Union Congress, Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Bank Employees Federation of India and other organizations were present in the media briefing.

A meeting of the joint platform of Central Trade Unions (CTUs) in the Opposition camp held in New Delhi on Thursday (May 15, 2025) has decided to postpone the general strike earlier announced to be held on May 20. The CTUs said in a statement that considering the prevailing situation throughout the country after the Pahalgam terror attack, they had decided to reschedule the strike against the implementation of the four Labour Codes to July 9. The CTUs have urged the Centre to ensure measures against those who were resorting to divisive hate campaigns at such a critical time. 'However, most appallingly, even in the midst of such a critical situation prevailing in the country owing to terrorist massacre and consequent developments, the employers' class, actively supported by the governments at the Centre and in many States, is carrying on its onslaughts on workers and employees across establishments. Working hours are being unilaterally increased; statutory minimum wages and social security benefits are being flouted,' the statement said. It added that the Union government had not bothered to meet the CTUs or to hold the Indian Labour Conference despite receiving notices to strike from all corners of the country across sectors. The CTUs asked working people to vigorously continue preparations for the general strike on July 9. It asked the Centre to reciprocate the positive approach of the CTUs and desist from implementing the Labour Codes.
