Canada's Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is projected to win a crucial by-election in the province of Alberta to secure a new Parliament seat after losing his constituency in the last general election. With final ballots still being counted, Poilievre leads with 80.1% of the vote in the rural Battle River-Crowfoot riding, according to Canada's public broadcaster CBC, which projects he will win."Getting to know the people in this region has been the privilege of my life," he told a rapturous crowd on Monday. His projected victory comes four months after his party was defeated by Mark Carney's Liberals and he lost the Ottawa-area seat he had held for two decades to Liberal Bruce Fanjoy.
In this by-election, Poilievre faced a record 214 candidates, many of whom are associated with a protest group seeking electoral reform. It is the second time the group has targeted Poilievre in a campaign. Voters were asked to fill out a write-in ballot due to the unusually high number of candidates.Poilievre's projected win will allow the 46-year-old to return to the House of Commons for the autumn sitting after his April defeat.Canada's conservative leader faces crucial election testHow Canada's Conservatives threw away a 27-point lead to lose againThe special election was called in June after former Conservative member of Parliament Damian Kurek stepped aside to let Poilievre run.Poilievre thanked Kurek for his "gracious sacrifice" in his victory speech.Alberta is a Conservative stronghold - Kurek, the former MP for the riding, had won with 83% of the vote. In the past, the riding was won by Conservatives with at least 70% of the vote. The Conservative leader faced pushback from some locals, including independent candidate Bonnie Critchley, who had accused him of seeking to win the riding as "nothing more than a means to an end".Poilievre defended his campaign, telling the Calgary Herald newspaper that he had canvassed like he was "one vote behind"."I believe in humility and earning people's trust," he said.Poilievre now faces a mandatory leadership review in January, where Conservative party members will vote on whether he should stay on as leader at their upcoming national convention.

Ashley St. Clair says that she's broke and in the process of ‘getting evicted' after ‘career suicide'

Ashley St. Clair, the purported mother of one of Elon Musk 's 14 children, has revealed she is broke and getting evicted from her home after a turbulent year of 'career suicide.' 'Well, after a year of unplanned career suicide, many questionable life choices, and a gap in my LinkedIn profile that cannot legally be explained, I've decided to start a podcast,' St Clair said amid reports of an ongoing custody battle with the Tesla CEO over one-year-old, Romulus. Though she did not mention him explicitly. She said it was 'not because anybody asked, but because statistically speaking, it was either this or join an MLM [multi-level marketing scheme],' before announcing she was 'getting evicted' and 'Polymarket [a U.S. cryptocurrency-based prediction market] offered me $10,000 to do an ad read.' In the 30-minute clip that aired on Musk's X social media platform Monday, which St. Clair has pitched as Bad Advice with Ashley St. Clair, she weighed in on the attack against 19-year-old DOGE staffer Edward Coristine, aka 'Big Balls,' who was allegedly assaulted in Washington, DC, earlier this month. St. Clair also spoke about several other contemporary issues. Speaking on the incident involving 'Big Balls,' in which it was reported that Coristine was assaulted by approximately 10 juveniles less than a mile from the White House, she said, 'Two teenagers tried to steal a car, and instead of just letting them take it, Big Balls decided to intervene. 'He was with his girlfriend, or lady partner, whatever the Musk orbit calls their non-committal fluid breeding vessel contenders these days […] He got his ass beat so bad, some are calling it reparations,' she said, adding, 'I'm not, of course. I would never do that. But what I don't understand is why you didn't just let them take the car?' The incident is believed to have sparked Trump's desire to deploy National Guard troops on the streets of the capital as part of a crackdown on crime. In February, St. Clair went public with the explosive allegation that Musk was the father of her child. The billionaire and vocal pro-natalist who has offered to father anyone's child now has 14 children. Then, a month later, his ex, Grimes, asked for pictures of their four-year-old son, X Æ A-Xii, or Lil X, not to be posted online after Elon Musk paraded him around the Oval Office. The pair also shares children, Exa Dark Sideræl, and Tau Techno Mechanicus. Strider, Azure, Arcadia, and Seldon Lycurgus are shared with Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis, and six of his children are shared with Justine Wilson, who was his wife for eight years between 2000 and 2008. St. Claire also alleged the billionaire had offered her a one-time payment of $15 million, plus $100,000 a month until her child turns 21, in exchange for her silence. She rejected the offer. 'I don't want my son to feel like he's a secret,' St. Clair reportedly told Musk's fixer Jared Birchall, who runs Musk's family office. Musk previously maintained that he does not know 'for sure' whether St. Clair's child is his, but the 'Probability of Paternity was 99.9999%,' according to a lab report seen by the Wall Street Journal. In April, the Tesla CEO said he had given 'Ashley $2.5M and am sending her $500k/year.' His post came in response to a video of St. Clair selling her Tesla while saying Elon Musk had cut off her 'son's child support.'

Finnish MP ‘takes own life' in Helsinki parliament

A Finnish MP has died inside the national parliament, the country's prime minister has said. Following reports that a politician had taken their own life, Petteri Orpo confirmed that the body of a member of his National Coalition parliamentary group had been found on the premises without naming the MP. 'Some time ago, we received truly shocking news from parliament, our common workplace,' he said. 'One of our colleagues has passed away on parliament premises. This is truly sad news.' He added that political discussions would be suspended in mourning for the MP's death. 'At the same time, we wish strength to his family, loved ones and colleagues. This deeply touches all of us, we send greetings and strength to everyone,' he said. The Finnish parliament is on summer recess, with MPs due to return to work on Sept 2. According to Finnish media, the MP's body was found at about 11am local time. There was a large police presence inside the building on Tuesday afternoon. Finnish media outlets are refraining from identifying the MP until their next of kin have been notified. In front of the parliament building, Finnish flags were lowered to half-mast. Päivi Räsänen, a Finnish MP, said it was 'shocking, heartbreaking news about the loss of a colleague', adding: 'I assume that the sad news will be conveyed to the family before the person is publicly announced. I deeply share the great sorrow of the family and remember them with prayers.' She told the Ilta Sanomat newspaper: 'I believe that this will mark the beginning of autumn in parliament. Despite the political tensions, it is a close-knit working community.' Ms Räsänen said a memorial service will be held at the beginning of the session, adding: 'There will be tears.'

Newsmax to pay $67m to Dominion to settle US election defamation lawsuit

The conservative outlet Newsmax has agreed to pay $67m to Dominion Voting Systems to settle a defamation lawsuit over lies about voting in the 2020 election. The settlement came as the case was headed to trial. Earlier this year, Delaware superior court judge Eric Davis ruled that Newsmax had defamed the voting technology company by broadcasting false claims about its equipment after the 2020 election. A jury would have considered whether Newsmax was liable for damages. Dominion had sued the outlet for $1.6bn. After the 2020 election, lies about the security of Dominion voting machines, which are widely used in the US, became central to Donald Trump's false claim that the election was stolen from him. Allies and other rightwing personalities made baseless claims that votes had been flipped and that the equipment was not secure. 'We are pleased to have settled this matter,' Dominion said in a statement to CNN. In a lengthy statement of its own, Newsmax was defiant, saying it chose to settle not because it was admitting wrongdoing, but because it believed Davis would not give the company a fair trial. 'Newsmax believed it was critically important for the American people to hear both sides of the election disputes that arose in 2020,' the company said. 'We stand by our coverage as fair, balanced, and conducted within professional standards of journalism.' Newsmax will be paying the settlement in three instalments until January 2027. Dominion obtained a $787.5m defamation settlement from Fox in 2023 on the eve of a defamation trial in Delaware. Ahead of the settlement, Dominion lawyers obtained internal communications from Fox hosts and personalities that showed they knew many of the outlandish claims the outlets hosts and guests were broadcasting about the election were not true. Newsmax agreed to pay $40m to settle a defamation case against Smartmatic, another voting equipment company, last year. One America News, another far-right outlet, also settled a defamation case with Smartmatic last year. Fox is now defending itself in a pending defamation suit brought by Smartmatic.
