Cork and Waterford camogie teams say decision to postpone Munster final shows ‘scant regard' for players
The Munster senior camogie final between the two teams was postponed after both panels said that they would wear shorts instead of the mandatory skorts, in line with the rules of the Camogie Association.
A meeting of the committee in charge of the Munster camogie championship took place yesterday with the decision made to delay the final until a later date.
In a joint statement today, the Cork and Waterford senior camogie panels said: 'As a united group of players, we want to express our bitter disappointment that today's Munster Senior Camogie Final has been postponed.
'It shows scant regard for the preparation of players both physically and mentally to be ready for a provincial showpiece, to make this decision just 16 hours before the scheduled throw-in.
'Anyone with an understanding of what it takes to compete in elite sport knows that this could never be in the best interests of players.
'We feel completely let down. Both panels had meticulously planned to peak for today. Training schedules and workload will now have to be readjusted, while not even knowing when the game will take place.
'There was an opportunity to take a step forward from the recent controversy. Instead, a provincial final has been postponed because we took control of what we would wear.
'To us, that feels like a massive step backwards.'
Before the recent Leinster championship semi-final, the Dublin and Kilkenny teams were told the game would be abandoned unless they changed from shorts to skorts.
Earlier this week, Sports Minister Charlie McConalogue appeared to support protesting camogie players, calling in the Dáil for a solution to the skorts row that everyone can be 'comfortable' with.
Mr McConalogue was replying to comments from Fine Gael TD Joe Neville, who spoke of a recent 83pc survey that found players wanted an end to the requirement that they wear skorts while playing matches.
Mr Neville said there should be a derogation to rule 10.5 (c) so that players could wear shorts instead, saying that recently the rules had to be enforced by a referee "put in a very difficult position'.
Mr McConalogue said he was 'very much aware' of the issue, saying it was important that players engage now with the Camogie Association.
"It's important they now come together to find a resolution to this which is comfortable for everyone," Mr McConalogue said.
'Making sure everybody's comfortable in terms of participating in sport is absolutely essential.
'I believe it's important that there's an agreed way forward which everybody can be comfortable with, and with players very much at the centre.'

Meade subsequently appealed the result, with the IHRB hearing evidence from him, jockey Donagh Meyler, Gordon Elliott, and his jockey Jack Kennedy. In his evidence, Meade, Trainer opined that the best horse won, and it was impossible to say that Kennedy was ever going to pass Helvic Dream. He argued that Kennedy's body language was that he was leaning out to meet Meyler and Helvic Dream and he never had to stop riding at any point Jack Kennedy, however, insisted he started to feel contact between 200 and 150 yards from the finish. He explained that he switched his whip from his left hand to his right hand because he was tight for room on his left side. The rider likened it to "two cars locked together" and concluded that he felt very hard done by passing the line as his horse didn't get a "fair crack at the race". When all evidence was heard, the three-person IHRB committee ultimately rejected the appeal. Mrs Justice Siobhan Keegan said on their behalf: "We do reflect that all of the participants in this appeal are experienced professionals, and we understand the positions that they respectively hold. "We also want to say that we can well see why an appeal has been brought in this case. "(We are) dealing with a case where each side has made some valid points and there are points to be made on each side of the argument. "Looking at the notice of appeal in summary, we think it is an underestimate to say that there was minor contact in this race. "We think it is an oversimplification to say that the second horse always had racing room. "In coming to our conclusion, we cannot be satisfied that the stewards erred in their decision to reverse the placings. "In summary that is because interference has occurred, and it was caused by Mr Meyler. "Whilst Mr (Jack) Kennedy's horse may not have obviously lost its own momentum, he was clearly significantly pressed for space so near the rail and he was not able to ride his strongest race. "We must therefore dismiss the appeal." While unsuccessful in his appeal, Meade was awarded some of the cost of lodging it.

"It's nothing to worry about for the next few years." Heimir Hallgrimsson has been positive about Ireland's chances of getting to the 2026 World Cup. The Boys in Green have not been to the tournament since 2002, while they have not been to a major competition since Euro 2016. Collins shares that positivity and believes he and his gaffer are not being bullish in saying so. He said: "I wouldn't say bullish. I'd say that we all have a similar feeling that it is a good opportunity to get to a World Cup. "It's different for Heimir because his whole job is focused on Ireland. We have the Premier League or Championship to worry about. "When it comes to the round, we're all in a positive place and we're all excited. We all think we've given ourselves an opportunity."

Profits at Johnny Sexton management firm surge by €425,952 to €2.67m
The management company owned by former Ireland rugby captain Johnny Sexton recorded post tax profits of €425,952 last year. Sexton retired from playing during the year under review in October 2023 following the Rugby World Cup and new accounts filed by Sexton's JAS Management & Promotions Ltd show that it recorded bumper profits for the 12 months to the end of September last. The €425,952 post tax profit followed a post tax loss of €83,240 in the prior year - a positive swing of €509,192. The profit for last year resulted in the firm sitting on accumulated profits of €2.67m at the end of September last. Cash funds at the company last year more than halved from €1.3m to €554,744 while during the same period, the value of the company's financial assets increased by €1.22m from €881,826 to €2.11m. The accounts - signed off by directors, Johnny Sexton and wife Laura Sexton on August 6 - show that aggregate pay to directors last year decreased sharply from €322,334 to €238,606 made up of emoluments of €63,759 and pension contributions of €174,856. Sexton added to his company's coffers in the current financial year with sales from his "Obsessed: The Autobiography" by Johnny Sexton which was the biggest selling non-fiction book of 2024 in Ireland. The paperback release of the book - which won Eason Sports Book of the Year at An Post's 2024 Irish Book Awards - in May of this year resulted in a fresh surge in sales. Sexton also benefited from the Government's innovative tax relief programme - introduced in 2002 - for professional sportspeople which allows them to receive a generous tax refund in the year they retire permanently from their sport. After retiring from the game in October 2023 following Ireland's World Cup loss to New Zealand, Sexton took up a senior role with glass bottle and tin-can maker Ardagh. However earlier this year, Sexton was added to the British and Irish Lions coaching ticket ahead of taking up a full time coaching role with Ireland rugby team this month as well as working with men's and women's senior and age-grade teams. The former Leinster out-half had been working with the Ireland men's squad in a part-time coaching capacity since the 2024 Autumn Nations Series. Sexton, a former World Rugby Player of the Year, was appointed Ireland captain by Andy Farrell in January 2020. Sexton is one of Irish Rugby's most decorated players and led Ireland to a Grand Slam in 2023 and won four European Rugby Champions Cups with Leinster.
