Chandigarh: Chandigarh municipal corporation has resumed the animal birth control (ABC) programme for the sterilisation of stray dogs with immediate effect at the ABC centre in Raipur Kalan here.
The programme was temporarily put on hold since Feb 25 due to administrative reasons. It will now be carried out directly by the civic body, ensuring a more efficient, humane, and systematic control of the stray dog population in the city.
MC commissioner Amit Kumar Tuesday said, "The ABC programme is a crucial step towards managing the stray dog population in a scientific and compassionate manner. The sterilisation procedures will be conducted strictly in accordance with the Animal Birth Control Rules and animal welfare guidelines, ensuring the safety and well-being of both animals and the community."
The MC chief requested the citizens to cooperate with the civic body in this important initiative by reporting unsterilised stray dogs in their sectors, colonies, or nearby areas. Information can be shared with MC's dog control cell through the contact numbers already issued. Citizens can also approach the MC through 0172-2787200 or 0172-6135200 for any kind of assistance and reporting about stray dog sterilisation.

NEET-UG 2025 topper Mahesh Kumar breaks language barrier: Hindi-medium student from Hanumangarh secures AIR-1
JAIPUR: In a remarkable achievement that challenges conventional perceptions, Mahesh Kumar from Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district has secured All India Rank 1 in NEET-UG 2025 with a 99.9 percentile, in the results released Saturday by the National Testing Agency. What makes his success particularly inspiring is his Hindi medium background – something Kumar initially feared would be a disadvantage. Kumar said that in his coaching classes while solving practice test papers he learnt how to make a balance between Hindi and English questions as alternates are given in the exam paper. "A few months before the exam, pressure increases automatically, and given last year's NEET-UG entrance, I was tensed as to how the paper will be. Then when we got the question paper, it was a different keeping calm and solving it under pressure was a challenge. After the exam I knew that I won't get a score of 700 like I used to get while solving practice papers, but later when I analysed the answers, I realised that I will get a decent rank, Never thought it would be AIR 1," said Kumar. Kumar, who hails from the small town of Nohar, was initially hesitant to pursue medical studies, considering instead a career in civil services through Humanities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "He feared that having studied in Hindi medium throughout, he might not be able to perform in competitive exams like JEE-NEET, which are usually dominated by English medium students. But today, he has done something we never imagined," said his mother, Hemlata Bagwani, a Grade-III teacher. The turning point came when his sister Himanshi encouraged him to pursue medicine, drawing from her own limited opportunities for higher education outside their hometown. His father, Ramesh Sindhi, is also a Grade-III teacher Notably, Kumar had to wait an additional year after Class 12 to meet the eligible age requirement for NEET. While preparing at a coaching institute in Sikar, Kumar received consistent support from his parents, who made regular weekend visits every two months. "We would take a train on Saturday and spend Sunday with Mahesh," shared Bagwani. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Father's Day in the U.S.: When, why, and how it all started
Father's Day in the United States is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June, a tradition that honors the vital role fathers and father figures play in families and society. In 2024, the day falls on Sunday, June 16. Origins of Father's Day The idea for Father's Day traces back to 1909, when Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, was inspired to honor her father, William Jackson Smart—a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone after his wife died during childbirth. Moved by a sermon about Mother's Day, which had already become an established celebration, Dodd proposed the idea of a similar holiday for fathers. With support from local churches and community leaders, the first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, aligning with the month of her father's birthday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Join new Free to Play WWII MMO War Thunder War Thunder Play Now Undo National Recognition While the holiday gained some regional popularity, it took decades to be formally recognized: 1924: President Calvin Coolidge publicly supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Live Events 1966: President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. 1972: President Richard Nixon signed it into law, making Father's Day an official national holiday. Why June? The choice of June was largely personal—Dodd wanted to honor her father during his birth month. Over time, this became a tradition embraced by the nation, and now June is widely associated with celebrating fatherhood. Originally rooted in religious and community observance, Father's Day has since evolved into a more commercial and cultural event celebrated across various walks of life. From heartfelt messages to gifts and family outings, it's a day for recognizing the dedication, strength, and love of fathers everywhere.
