VIA Rail received funding to replace its pan-Canadian fleet and offer new trains to Canadians from Coast to Coast to Coast.
MONTRÉAL, June 13, 2025 /CNW/ - VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) marked a year of significant progress in 2024, continuing the strong growth trajectory seen since the pandemic. The Corporation reported revenues of $480.2 million, while ridership increased to 4.4 million passengers. Additionally, VIA Rail publicly introduced its bold new strategic plan, VIAction 2030, setting the stage for the future of passenger rail in Canada.
"VIA Rail navigated 2024 with ambition and confidence, looking toward the future, while also addressing daily challenges that exposed certain vulnerabilities," said Françoise Bertrand, VIA Rail's former Chairperson of the Board of Directors. "Our promising future is expressed in a new strategic vision focused on transforming our organization to better serve Canadians for generations to come."
Navigating Operational Challenges
While 2024 was a year of growth and transformation for VIA Rail, it also presented operational hurdles, particularly in the Québec City–Windsor corridor. In the fourth quarter, new infrastructure regulations significantly impacted on-time performance, posing challenges in maintaining the high level of service passengers expect. VIA Rail is actively addressing these issues to enhance reliability and ensure a smoother travel experience.
"This past year laid the foundation for VIA Rail's future, but it also brought unprecedented challenges," said Mario Péloquin, President and Chief Executive Officer. "In October, new regulations imposed by the host railway created significant disruptions in our corridor services. Despite these setbacks, Canadians continue to choose train travel in record numbers, and our financial performance remained strong, with a greater-than-expected reduction in our operating deficit."
VIAction 2030: A Vision for the Future of Passenger Rail
2024 saw the introduction of VIA Rail`s 5-year strategic plan, VIAction 2030. Grounded in five strategic pillars, VIAction 2030 aims to improve VIA Rail's operations, enhance passenger service, and establish the company as a key player in integrated mobility across Canada. The plan sets out a transformative vision to provide Canadians with a seamless, sustainable, and customer-centric travel experience.
Full Operation of the New Fleet in the Québec City – Windsor Corridor
In 2024, VIA Rail marked a major milestone with the arrival of its new fleet in Southwestern Ontario. This modernization effort paves the way for the entire Québec City–Windsor corridor to be served by state-of-the-art, accessible, and environmentally friendly trains by summer 2025.
The launch of these new, modern trains offers businesses a unique opportunity to integrate sustainable rail travel into their corporate travel policies. Adopting this approach is simple and can significantly lower an organization's environmental impact. With improved ergonomics, enhanced stability, brighter interiors, and better connectivity, these trains are designed to support productivity on the move, making them the smart choice for companies seeking both efficiency and sustainability.
A New App to Simplify Your Journey
In 2024, building on the success of its new reservation system introduced in 2023, VIA Rail launched a new mobile customer app. This app provides passengers with a convenient and efficient way to manage their reservations and access their VIA Preference accounts.
Historic Investment: A New Pan-Canadian Fleet
A landmark moment for VIA Rail came in 2024 when the Government of Canada announced funding for the replacement of the Corporation's pan-Canadian fleet as part of the federal budget. This historic investment, the largest in VIA Rail's history, will allow the Corporation to select a supplier to design and build modern, comfortable, accessible, and sustainable trains, ensuring a more connected Canada.
"The history of Canada is closely intertwined with the history of train travel, and VIA Rail's long-distance routes hold a strong place in Canada," said Jonathan Goldbloom, Chair of the Board of Directors. "The replacement of VIA Rail's pan-Canadian fleet is essential to allow VIA Rail to maintain its services and will also ensure that the next generations of Canadians have access to modern comfortable trains in every corner of the country."

Information about TFSA contribution limits now available, says the CRA
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says it has resolved an issue that prevented people from seeing how much contribution room they had left in their tax-free savings accounts (TFSAs). That information first became unavailable on April 17. CRA spokesperson Charles Drouin told CBC News in an email that the federal agency introduced a new data validation process this year to ensure that tax information submitted to them is accurate. "Upfront validations now advise these filers of errors with their information return submission in real-time and prevent the submission of invalid returns," Drouin wrote. He said the new system would ultimately improve the quality of the data the Canada Revenue Agency receives and allow for any errors to be corrected faster. But he added that "stricter validations and new processes caused delays in receiving and processing the information returns. As a result, there have been delays in processing TFSA annual information returns this year." Each year, Canadians 18 or older get more contribution room in their tax-free savings accounts, which shield investments from taxes. In 2025, for example, the new contribution limit was $7,000. If someone was 18 in 2009 – the year the the savings accounts were introduced – has lived in Canada since then and never contributed to their TFSA, their total contribution limit would be $102,000 as of Jan. 1, 2025. If someone didn't properly track their contributions over the years, though, they could risk going over their limit, which comes with a one per cent interest penalty per month for those funds over the limit. The CRA website notes that posted contribution limits do not take into account any contributions to the TFSA made since Jan. 1, 2025.

Danielle Smith pitches B.C. on pipeline project, saying it benefits ‘all Canadians'
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is making a pipeline pitch directly to British Columbians. Smith told Global News that Canada needs to take advantage of this moment of national unity to respond to U.S. President Donald Trump's threats. 'When you look at the potential for a million barrels a day at today's prices, that's about 20 billion dollars worth of value,' Smith told Focus BC. 'It doesn't just go to Alberta, it benefits all Canadians.' Smith is leaning on the Team Canada approach but does acknowledge that there still need to be work to address Indigenous concerns. 'We hear the environmental concerns and that is why it is good to have Indigenous partners so we can reroute the route, and deal with issues on the ground,' she said. Story continues below advertisement 'I know a few things need to be modified, but we can get to yes.' 2:01 Pipeline dream: Alberta premier makes pitch at Global Energy Show There is still no proponent for the pipeline project but the previous iteration of a pipeline to the coast destroyed the relationship with then Alberta Premier Alison Redford and then B.C. Premier Christy Clark. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. 'Let's go to a port that is already shipping goods, that is ice-free year-round,' she added. B.C. Energy Minister Adrian Dix says the province is opposed to the new pipeline and instead, Alberta should focus on building out the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion, which already cost taxpayers more than $34 billion. Story continues below advertisement 'We still need to get some work to get value for that pipeline,' Dix said. 'We have been supportive of that now that taxpayers have paid for it. The idea that taxpayers would subsidize a project that has no proponent makes no sense to us.' Watch the full interview with Smith above.

TORONTO, June 13, 2025 /CNW/ - The final half-day of Info-Tech LIVE 2025 wrapped up with impactful keynotes focused on securing top talent, exploring groundbreaking technologies, and summarizing crucial insights gained over the course of the global research and advisory firm's annual conference. Thousands of IT leaders gathered at Bellagio in Las Vegas from June 10 to 12, 2025, and received strategic guidance on harnessing emerging trends and fostering resilient organizations that are ready for future challenges. Together, these final keynotes distilled the spirit of Info-Tech LIVE 2025 in Las Vegas: future-ready leadership grounded in practical action. Whether redefining how to approach talent, embracing the frontier of quantum computing, or synthesizing the week's most essential insights, each session delivered tangible takeaways to help organizations move forward with purpose. Key Highlights From Info-Tech LIVE 2025 in Last Vegas Day 3: 1. The Race for Talent: Build Over Buy Speaker: Carlene McCubbin, AVP of Research Development, Info-Tech Research Group The final day's keynote addressed the persistent IT talent crisis, arguing that traditional approaches to talent, which focused heavily on hiring and certifications, are no longer viable in today's fast-evolving landscape. Despite rising expectations for IT to lead innovation, only a small percentage of organizations currently meet these demands, with staff capacity, skills, and engagement cited as the top pain points. To tackle these issues, Carlene McCubbin introduced the AI x Talent Flywheel, a compounding framework that helps organizations rethink and redesign their talent systems to match the pace of change. Key takeaways Automate to Reclaim Time: Eliminate low-value tasks and reinvest saved time into growth by using AI to "automate the friction." Embed Learning into Work: Shift from episodic training to continuous, embedded learning using the 60-30-10 rule: 60% in-flow learning, 30% peer intelligence, and 10% formal updates. Expand with AI Agents: Scale through centaur leadership models where AI and humans collaborate symbiotically, expanding output without additional headcount. Build the Human Advantage: Focus on adaptability, creativity, and empathy, traits AI can't replicate, to unlock performance and future-proof teams. 2. The Future of AI & Quantum: What to Expect Next Speaker: Felix Schmidt, CEO & Founder, GenAIus Inc. In this provocative keynote, Felix Schmidt explored the convergence of agentic AI and quantum computing and their transformative implications for businesses and society. Using vivid comparisons between classical and quantum computing, Schmidt showcased the radical capabilities of quantum chips, highlighting that problems that traditional supercomputers would take longer than the universe's age can now be solved in mere minutes. Schmidt introduced the concept of "Q Day," the moment quantum computing becomes publicly accessible, and emphasized the urgency of preparing for it. Schmidt warned that encryption methods, blockchain systems, and even national infrastructure could be at risk, urging IT leaders to audit their encryption and begin AI agentic pilots immediately. Key Takeaways: Quantum computing represents a paradigm shift, not just an upgrade, that can drastically outperform classical machines in both speed and scale. AI agents are already transforming enterprise operations, offering unprecedented productivity gains when deployed effectively. Executive digital twins are becoming a reality, streamlining workflows and redefining leadership efficiency. The acceleration toward "Q Day" demands that organizations start preparing now by piloting agentic AI, auditing encryption, and staying informed on quantum advancements. 3. Five Key Takeaways from Info-Tech LIVE 2025 Speaker: Jeremy Roberts, Senior Director, Research & Content, Info-Tech Research Group This closing keynote brought together the major themes of the conference, offering actionable insights to carry forward. Jeremy Roberts highlighted how IT leaders can seize the moment to lead with confidence and transform uncertainty into opportunity. Key takeaways Don't just survive; thrive. Uncontrollable external events will always occur, but bold leadership during times of uncertainty can turn crises into catalysts for progress. Organizations can't out-hire the pace of change; they must out-learn it. This means fostering continuous learning, building strong peer networks, and prioritizing a healthy workplace culture over quick fixes. IT must first get its own house in order. Structured frameworks, such as the CIO Playbook, enable IT departments to optimize their performance and support enterprise-wide growth. Make IT's value visible. If an impact isn't seen, it's as if it hasn't happened. Clearly linking metrics to business value ensures alignment with all stakeholders, from chief financial officers (CFOs) to chief executive officers (CEOs). AI agents are not plug-and-play. Effective implementation requires rigorous planning and prototyping to avoid the many technical, operational, and integration-related pitfalls.
