The Battle to Define Luigi Mangione Takes Center Stage

The Battle to Define Luigi Mangione Takes Center Stage

New York Times21 hours ago
On a recent Friday evening in San Francisco, I attended a live musical staging of an internet spectacle I had experienced seven months before. As I entered the 60-seat black box theater, a security guard scanned me with a wand. An attendant sealed my phone into a plastic pouch. The program began with a disclaimer.
The show I was about to watch was 'a satirical work of fiction,' which 'falls under the legal protections afforded to parody and satire under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,' it said. I had read the same disclosure on the website where I secured my ticket, and just before the show began, I heard it repeated once more — this time over a loudspeaker in the rapid-fire style of pharmaceutical legalese.
The little production with the security protocol and the preshow legal defense is 'Luigi: The Musical.' It's a comedy that imagines the days following the arrest of Luigi Mangione — the man accused of assassinating the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, last December, setting off a five-day manhunt and inspiring more than 70,000 Facebook users to apply a laughing emoji to a somber UnitedHealth tribute to Mr. Thompson.
The shooting itself had been staged like a performance, with a message etched on bullet casings and a backpack of Monopoly money left near the scene. As the police pursued their suspect, they released surveillance images to aid in his capture — and instead provoked an internet-wide investigation into whether the shooter might be righteous, cool, hot, tall, straight, bisexual, single or taken. By the time the cops apprehended the 26-year-old Mangione inside a Pennsylvania McDonalds, he had a fandom ready to hail him as an outlaw hero for the internet age.
If previous American outlaws — Jesse James, John Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde — were constructed through dime novels, ballads and films, Mr. Mangione's persona was built by and for social media. He's a software engineer with a face for the internet's hard turn from text to image. As TikTokers of increasingly obscure expertise weighed in on his arrest — astrologer, physiognomist, brow groomer, certified color analyst — they sent a message that Mr. Mangione's moon sign and his color story were of greater public interest than the murder he was accused of committing.
The phenomenon inspired 'Saturday Night Live' bits, stand-up routines and academic inquiries into the regulation of health care algorithms and the psychosocial effects of chronic pain. Also, a counter movement of outraged commentators arose, ready to scold anyone who would make light of a killing. Mr. Mangione's court dates have drawn supportive crowds with placards reading 'Free Luigi,' but also the artist Scott LoBaido, who has hauled with him a skeleton in a Nintendo costume strapped to an electric chair that he calls 'Deep Fried Luigi.'

Louisiana sues Roblox alleging the popular gaming site fails to protect children

Louisiana sued the online gaming platform Roblox on Thursday, alleging the wildly popular site has perpetuated an environment where sexual predators 'thrive, unite, hunt and victimize kids.' The lawsuit, filed in state court by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, alleges that Roblox has failed to implement effective safety measures to protect child users from adult predators. 'Due to Roblox's lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana,' Murrill said in a news release. 'Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety.' The company has faced lawsuits and backlash for not doing enough to protect kids on its gaming services. Last month, a lawsuit was filed in Iowa after a 13-year-old girl was allegedly introduced to an adult predator on the platform, then kidnapped and trafficked across multiple states and raped. In Louisiana, Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard said his office has had multiple cases involving Roblox. In one, police allege a man used voice-altering technology to pose as a girl on the platform. Ard said there have yet to be any arrests made related to the gaming site. Ultimately, Murrill said she believes Roblox should be shut down. An email seeking comment was sent to the company Thursday. The free online gaming platform has more than 111 million monthly users. Its website describes Roblox as 'the ultimate virtual universe that lets you create, share experiences with friends, and be anything you can imagine.' Roblox doesn't allow users to share videos or images in chats and tries to block any personal information, such as phone numbers. However, as with other gaming platforms and social media sites with similar policies, people find ways around such safeguards. Roblox, which according to its website has 'a zero-tolerance policy for the exploitation of minors,' doesn't allow children under 13 to chat with other users outside of games unless they have explicit parental permission. Because the platform does not encrypt private chat conversations, the company can monitor and moderate them. However, Murrill said there is no age minimum or substantial age verification process once a user signs up. As a result, young children, teens and adults posing as children can sign up, she said. The company says on its website that age verification 'is a new feature that is currently in testing on Roblox.' Last month, it launched a feature that requires teenagers aged 13 to 17 to send a video selfie to verify their ages if they want to chat freely with people they know, called 'trusted connections.' Amid mounting criticism in recent months, the company has implemented additional measures that it says will keep their young users safe. In August, Roblox told AP that it was rolling out an artificial intelligence system to help detect early signs of possible child endangerment, such as sexually exploitive language. Roblox said the system led it to submit 1,200 reports of potential attempts at child exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the first half of 2025.

Star Trek is one of the best free movies to stream this weekend (August 15-17)

Last weekend, two new releases dominated the box office. Zach Cregger's Weapons dazzled audiences on its way to a $42 million domestic opening weekend. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis participated in another body-swap comedy in Freakier Friday, which opened to just under $30 million. While those films are in theaters, the movies below can be watched inside your home for no cost. These free movies range from a coming-of-age comedy to a sci-fi reboot. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, and the best movies on Amazon Prime Video. Can't Hardly Wait (1998) The coming-of-age movies that take place within 24 hours are my personal favorite. At the top sit Dazed and Confused, The Breakfast Club, and American Graffiti. Somewhere below that tier sits Can't Hardly Wait, the teen comedy that predominantly takes place at a high school party. The senior class at Huntington Hillside High convenes for a graduation party. Shy kids, like Preston Meyers (Ethan Embry), want to tell their crush (Jennifer Love Hewitt) how they feel. The nerds, like William Lichter (Charlie Korsmo), hope to exact revenge on their bully (Peter Facinelli). If you're Kenny (Seth Green) and Denise (Lauren Ambrose), all that matters is escaping a locked bathroom. Can't Hardly Wait does not reinvent the wheel, but its charming cast and hilarious gags are a welcome addition to the high school genre. Stream Can't Hardly Wait on Tubi. Basic Instinct (1992) Sharon Stone is a member of the 'Femme Fatale Hall of Fame' with her performance in Basic Instinct. After the murder of a rock star, homicide detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) is tasked with finding the killer. The suspect is the girlfriend, Catherine Tramell (Stone), a crime novelist whose recent book mirrors her boyfriend's murder. Instead of investigating Catherine, Nick engages with her in a sexually driven affair. The affair with Catherine negatively affects his relationship with Dr. Elisabeth Garner (Jeanne Tripplehorn), who also becomes a suspect in the murder case. While I wouldn't recommend watching this movie with your family, Basic Instinct is the addictive erotic thriller that today's audiences have been begging for more of. Stream Basic Instinct on Pluto TV. Star Trek (2009) After the failures of 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis, the Star Trek franchise needed a fresh start. Enter J.J. Abrams, the architect who rebooted the sci-fi property through an alternate timeline, the Kelvin universe. The result became 2009's Star Trek. After a chance meeting with a captain, James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), the son of a fallen officer, joins Starfleet Academy. While responding to a distress signal, Kirk boards the USS Enterprise, the famous ship from the original Star Trek. After the capture of Commander Pike (Bruce Greenwood), Kirk takes it upon himself to save the galaxy from the villainous Nero (Eric Bana). But first, Kirk must patch things up with his rival, Spock (Zachary Quinto), setting the stage for their future partnership. Stream Star Trek on Pluto TV.
