Community activists putting pedal to metal in £175,000 Killin pump track fundraising

Daily Record02-05-2025

The £175,000 track project aims to build the facility both for the benefit of locals, but also to draw visitors and biking enthusiasts to the area.
Community activists in Killin are hoping individuals and organisations will galvanise behind their efforts to get a much anticipated £175,000 pump track project over the line.
Killin Sports and Recreation Hub, established in 2022, are working alongside the Killin and Ardeonaig Community Development Trust (KAT) and Killin Community Council (KCC) to raise funds in order to complete the project.

The track is expected to be not only a popular facility for locals, but could also draw visitors and biking enthusiasts from much further afield.

Chris Kane, MP for Stirling and Strathallan, has committed his support.
The Hub was set up with the aims of regenerating sports and recreation infrastructure and social inclusion within the Killin area. It recently received a vote of congratulations from Stirling Council for its work regenerating Killin's tennis courts/MUGA pitch and marking 70km of local trails.
Now it has its sights set on creating a Pump Track for the local area, which will provide a vital recreational space for their youth and serve as a boost to local tourism, with the nearest equivalent facilities currently over 40 miles away, with no public transport links.
Thanks to incredible community efforts, they have successfully raised £93,000 to date, with nearly £10,000 being raised locally.
However, for them to finish this project, they still require £57,000 in additional funds.

Chris Kane MP said: 'I am very much aware of the demand for greater recreational facilities and cycling provision in Killin.
'I would like to commend the work of the sports hub, the community development trust and the community council on their work already to get this project off the ground.
'I am committed to promoting the fundraising efforts of the project and supporting them as much as I can in my capacity.'

David Fettes from Killin Sport and Recreation Hub said: 'The project has been led by Killin Sports and Recreation Hub with great support from Chris McKenna from Active Stirling.
'We are partnered with the Killin community council and the Killin development trust. We have received funds from Sports Scotland and FVL CLLD (Forth Valley and Lomond Community Led Local Development), and locally from Killin Sports and Recreation Hub, Killin and Ardeonaig development trust, Taymouth Castle and many individual small donations with pledges from various local clubs.'
They are currently putting applications in to the Community Spaces Improvement Grant and the FVL CLLD funding programme, however, they are encouraging individual donations as well.

The new track, within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, will be accessible from the National Cycle Network Route 7 and local mountain bike trails.
There has been strong community engagement with the project, including the design of the new track and club branding carried out in conjunction with Killin Youth Group.
The project aims to remove one of the key barriers to taking part in sport and physical activity in rural areas by offering a free accessible venue at the heart of Killin.

Josh Moffett elated to edge sibling rivalry after clinching Cavan Stages Rally victory

Tyre choice proved to be something of a lottery for the duration of the closed-road event due to a handful of special stages being bone dry in parts and biblically wet in others. However, Moffett – in his older-generation but much-preferred Hyundai Motorsport i20 R5 – got the rub of the green for the Third Round of the competition when it came to strategy. That allowed him to carve out an early lead on the opening speed test alongside stand-in co-driver Andy Hayes before he steadily added to that to finish at the head of the leaderboard. His older brother Sam – another former National champion – made it a Moffett one-two courtesy of a scratch time on the Power Stage. He went all out for the extra bonus point and, in doing so, leapfrogged Kevin Eves to take second in his Hyundai i20 N Rally2. 'It was a good day and we really enjoyed it,' said Josh, whose winning margin after almost 70 competitive miles was 18.2 seconds. 'With the Citroen breaking down on the last event in Kerry, it was important that we came here and got the win for the Championship. 'Getting a one-two is also pretty cool as well because it has been a while since that has happened,' he continued. 'But the most important thing is that I am on the top step!' Having been hampered in the opening exchanges by too hard a set-up, Sam's pursuit of a podium place was boosted on stage three when Round Two winner Eddie Doherty spun his Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 and Garry Jennings did the same in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta Rally2. His run to second was anything but plain sailing, however, as he got caught out under braking and ended up down a slip road on SS5 before reporting a pop-off valve issue on the next test. Set-up issues played into the hands of Eves on the penultimate stage before Sam regrouped to move back into the silver medal position with Shane Buckley right at the death. Robert Barrable produced a strong recovery drive to climb from seventh to fourth, helped in part by Jennings' earlier spin and Doherty's Czech supermini breaking a half shaft and a rear anti-roll bar. However, fifth was still good enough for Round Two winner Doherty to bank some all-important points. While he remains very much in the title hunt, Desi Henry's hopes were dealt another blow in Cavan. Targeting at least a top-three result, the best he could manage in a hired Ford Fiesta Rally2 was sixth, meaning the signs suggest he is set to pull out of the Championship.

Fanatics will host a skills challenge between fans and celebrities, with $2 million on the line

Sports giant Fanatics is pitting fans against greats Tom Brady, Kevin Durant and Alex Rodriguez at an upcoming marketing event. The company announced Tuesday it is introducing a skills-based competition at Fanatics Fest 2025, taking place June 20-22 in New York City. Fanatics says more than $2 million will be given away in prizes, including a $1 million cash prize for first place, a Ferrari 812 GTS for second place and a Lebron James collectors card worth $250,000 for third place. If no fans finish in the top three, falling short of the celebrity competitors, the highest-scoring fan will receive $100,000. If a celebrity competitor comes in first, they take home the seven-figure prize. 'I think the thinking was, how do we create even more of an insane environment where fans and athletes and streamers are all running around, in this case, quite literally, having a great time and showcasing all of that,' said Lance Fensterman, CEO of Fanatics Events. It's the second Fanatics Fest after the inaugural event last year drew more than 70,000 fans and brought together major sports leagues and hundreds of current and former athletes. The offerings last year included league activations, autograph sessions and a trading cards and collectibles show. This year, Fanatics is hoping to go even bigger — with a goal of bringing in 100,000 attendees — as the company continues to broaden its reach in sports marketing. Michael Rubin acquired Fanatics in 2011 after merging it with his company, GSI Commerce. What began as a sports e-commerce platform has evolved in recent years into a diverse sports platform offering trading cards and sports memorabilia, live shopping, betting and gaming, as well as an events business. Fifty fans will be selected to compete at Fanatics Fest 2025 against top talent that also includes comedian Kevin Hart, former New England Patriot Rob Gronkowski, Los Angeles Clippers shooting guard James Harden and Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles. The competition will include Major League Baseball pitching accuracy, National Hockey League slapshot accuracy, National Football League passing accuracy, a National Basketball Association shooting competition, a FIFA goal scoring challenge and a golfing contest. Fans can apply to participate by submitting a short video in the Fanatics app. While Fanatics' events business represents just a small fraction of business — last valued at $25 billion, according to a person familiar with the company — Fensterman said Fanatics Fest creates a lot of positive sentiment around the company. 'It's incredibly impactful in terms of bringing the entire ecosystem together for the sole focus of delighting,' he said.

Matt Berninger: ‘Yeah, I learnt a lot from Taylor Swift'

Matt Berninger is explaining why he loves baseballs. This is not the same as loving baseball. 'I toss baseballs with my daughter but I don't follow the game,' he explains. 'I don't have a favourite team. I don't even know if I could name you a single major league player.' For Berninger, lead singer and frontman of the beloved American rock band the National, baseballs are spherical journals for jotting down song ideas. 'I have about 80 baseballs and I use them as notebooks,' he says. 'I used to fill notebooks but baseballs are so good because they're really fun to hold in your hand.' Berninger would write thoughts for titles or scraps of lyrics on baseballs and when he was searching for inspiration while
