Aoun says war-hit south will participate in May municipal vote
by Naharnet Newsdesk 24 April 2025, 14:32
The Lebanese army has been deploying in the southern villages and towns from which Israeli troops have withdrawn as Lebanon is set to hold its municipal elections next month including in the country's south, still suffering from devastation from major Israeli bombings and a ground invasion.
The Israeli strikes have not been halted by a ceasefire reached in late November and Israeli troops remain on five hills in south Lebanon that Israel deems "strategic".
The Lebanese army -- which is set under the truce deal to deploy in the south as Hezbollah fighters withdraw north of the Litani river -- is clearing the southern towns of mines and removing all armed manifestations there, President Joseph Aoun told U.N. peacekeeping mission chief Aroldo Lazaro in a meeting Thursday. "But that would take time," Aoun said.
The President also called for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the five "strategic" hills, as he assured that the municipal elections will take place across the south on Saturday, May 24.
"Preparations are underway to ensure the participation of residents of the villages destroyed by Israel," he said.

Israel launches many strikes near aid site in Gaza
Israeli military strikes killed at least 35 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, most of them at an aid site operated by the U.S-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation in central Gaza, local health officials said. Medical officials at Shifa and Al-Quds Hospitals said at least 25 people were killed as they approached the aid site near the former settlement of Netzarim, and dozens were wounded. Ten other people were killed in other Israeli military strikes in Khan Younis in the south of the enclave, they added. The Israeli military had no immediate comment. On Tuesday, when Gaza health officials said 17 people were killed near another GHF aid site in Rafah in southern Gaza, the army said it fired warning shots to distance "suspects" who were approaching the troops and posed a threat. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday there had been "significant progress" in efforts to secure the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza, but that it was "too soon" to raise hopes that a deal would be reached. Despite efforts by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar to restore a ceasefire in Gaza, neither Israel nor Hamas has shown willingness to back down on core demands, with each side blaming the other for the failure to reach a deal. Two Hamas sources told Reuters they did not know about any new ceasefire offers. The war erupted after Hamas-led militants took 251 hostages and killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, in an October 7, 2023, attack, Israel's single deadliest day. Israel's military campaign has since killed nearly 55,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to health authorities in Gaza, and flattened much of the coastal enclave.

Dozens Martyred in Israeli Airstrikes Targeting Aid Seekers in Gaza
Dozens of Palestinians were martyred or injured on Saturday as Israeli occupation forces intensified airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, striking civilian neighborhoods and gatherings of those seeking humanitarian aid amid a worsening famine and critical food insecurity. Israeli occupation forces opened heavy fire on Palestinian civilians gathered to receive desperately needed aid along the Netzarim axis in central Gaza. This is part of a repeated pattern where aid distribution points become scenes of violence, as Israel continues to weaponize… — Quds News Network (@QudsNen) June 10, 2025 Four young men lost their lives and several others were wounded when Israeli warplanes bombed an area near the Osama Bin Zaid School in the al-Saftawi neighborhood, north of Gaza City. Israeli warplanes bombard the Batn Al-Sameen neighborhood, south of Khan Younis. — Quds News Network (@QudsNen) June 11, 2025 Israeli aggression continued with reports of additional airstrikes in the al-Sabra neighborhood, as well as drone attacks targeting civilians waiting for food assistance near the entrance to the al-Bureij refugee camp. Many were critically injured as live fire was directed at desperate residents in central Gaza, with casualties flooding into al-Awda Hospital. So far, four martyrs have been confirmed, along with approximately 90 others seeking medical care following the assaults on aid seekers along the Salah al-Din Road. The situation in the al-Nuseirat refugee camp worsened as two more individuals were killed and others injured from airstrikes near the Fayad roundabout. BREAKING: Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat refugee camp reports that seven Palestinians were killed in a series of Israeli attacks on groups of civilians around the so-called Netzarim checkpoint in the central Gaza Strip. — Quds News Network (@QudsNen) June 11, 2025 Further attacks involved Israeli drone-launched bombs targeting displaced Palestinians along a nearby street, resulting in three additional martyrs being recovered from the rubble. In the southern Gaza Strip, Israeli aircraft bombed a tent housing displaced civilians in the al-Mawasi area, while military vehicles fired upon residents in the Batn al-Samin area, contributing to the growing number of injuries. UN Warnings: The Risk of Famine in Gaza is Worsening The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced that the risk of famine in the Gaza Strip remains extremely high, given the ongoing restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid. The WFP noted that since May 19, it has been able to bring only limited quantities of life-saving aid into Gaza. Only 700 trucks have entered since aid resumed, compared to the 600 to 700 trucks that entered daily before the recent escalation. The WFP emphasized that preventing famine requires regular support for the people of Gaza by meeting their basic food needs. It emphasized that the entry of aid requires providing safe routes for convoys, expediting permit approvals, and opening crossings. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that the ongoing hostilities and worsening hunger are pushing more than two million people in Gaza toward despair.

Manchester City manager Guardiola calls for more attention on Gaza suffering
by Naharnet Newsdesk 10 June 2025, 21:47 Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged people not to ignore the suffering in Gaza amid Israel's military campaign and longstanding blockade of the territory. "It's so painful, what we see in Gaza. It hurts me all (over) my body," the Spanish coach said in a speech at the University of Manchester, where he was given an honorary degree on Monday. "It's not about ideology. It's not about, I'm right or you're wrong. Come on. It is just about the love of life, about the care of your neighbor," Guardiola said. Guardiola was honored for his sporting success with City and for his "inspirational work away from football, including through his family foundation, the Guardiola Sala Foundation," the university said on its website. It made no mention of Guardiola's speech regarding the situation in Gaza, where more than 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed during the 20-month-long war, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants. "Maybe we think that we see the boys and girls of four years old being killed (by) a bomb or being killed at the hospital because it's not a hospital anymore, it's not our business," Guardiola said. "But be careful. The next one will be ours. The next four- or five-year-old kids will be ours. Sorry, but I see my kids, Maria, Marius and Valentina, when I see every morning since the nightmare started for the infants in Gaza, and I'm so ... scared." The current war was ignited by the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, on Oct. 7, 2023, when 251 hostages were taken. Hamas is still holding 55 hostages, more than half of them believed to be dead. Israel has restricted and sometimes blocked all aid into Gaza, including food, fuel and medicine. Experts say that policy has pushed Gaza toward famine. Israel says Hamas siphons off the aid to bolster its rule. "You might ask what we can do," Guardiola said. "There is a story, I'm reminded of it often. A forest is on fire. All the animals leave, terrified, helpless, helpless. But the small bird flies back and forth, back and forth to the sea, back and forth, carrying drops of water in the sea and beak. The snake laughs and asks, 'Why bro, you will never put the fire out.' The bird replies, 'Yes I know it.' 'Then why you do it again and again,' the snake asks. 'I'm just doing my part,' the bird replied for the last time. That is, the bird knows it doesn't stop the fire, but it refuses to do nothing." The war has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and displaced around 90% of the territory's population, leaving people there almost completely dependent on international aid.
