City thrash Juventus to maintain 100% record at Club World Cup
The third straight victory for Pep Guardiola's side increases the chances of City avoiding a meeting with Real Madrid in the last 16 -- a fate that may now await Juventus.
City and Juve will not know their opponent until the final pair of games in Group H conclude later on Friday.
A positive day for City saw 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri make his first start since rupturing his ACL in September and Guardiola's side, featuring several new faces, look significantly improved on the team which struggled to finish 13 points behind Premier League champions Liverpool last season.
City were on top from the outset with a Bernardo Silva header forcing Juve keeper Michele Di Gregorio to save with his feet in the fifth minute.
Four minutes later, Guardiola's new-look side had the lead when after a characteristic, patient build-up, Rayan Ait-Nouri split the Juve defence with a superb pass which Jeremy Doku collected and dispatched into the far corner.
Juve were gifted an equaliser when City's Brazilian keeper Ederson's pass out was intercepted by Teun Koopmeiners who marched into the box and confidently fired home.
Juve returned the gift though in the 26th minute when French defender Pierre Kalulu, under no pressure, turned a low cross from Matheus Nunes into his own net.
A short but intense downpour just before half-time cooled the stadium down and Guardiola introduced his prolific Norwegian striker Erling Haaland at the break and it took just seven minutes for him to find the scoresheet.
Tijjani Reijnders fed Matheus Nunes whose low cross found an unmarked Haaland in the middle and while it wasn't the cleanest of finishes from close range, the striker celebrated his 300th career goal.
Rodri left the field in the 66th minute to applause as Ilkay Gundogan took over his role in the centre of midfield but City continued to over-run the Turin side.
Haaland latched on to a long ball from Ederson and looked for fellow sub Phil Foden in the middle but put his cross beyond the England man only for Savinho to recover it and set-up Foden for a simple conversion.
Savinho then made made it 5-1 when after a Haaland shot was saved by De Gregorio's feet, the Brazilian met the loose ball with a thundering drive which flew in off the underside of the bar.
Juventus had created little but restored a little pride when Kenan Yildiz produced a lovely touch and clever pass to set Dusan Vlahovic free and the Serbian beat Ederson from the edge of the box.

Kaino's side hammered Bordeaux-Begles 59-3 12 months ago but have lost three straight games to the newly-crowned Champions Cup winners. On the way to lifting the continental crown in May, Bordeaux-Begles beat Toulouse in the semi-finals leaving the record 23-time French champions with just the league to play for this season. "We never walk into a finals game thinking that it's going to be a walkover like that one, but if history repeats itself like the semi-final, it's going to be a tough one," Toulouse assistant coach Kaino told AFP. "Bordeaux-Begles have definitely been improving. "They're not the same team as the team that we played in the Top 14 final last year," the 42-year-old added. Kaino joined Toulouse in 2018, a year after winning the last of his 81 Test appearances, which included Rugby World Cup success in 2011 and four years later. He retired from playing in 2021 with a Top 14 and Champions Cup double before transitioning into coaching as a skills specialist with the aristocrats of French and European rugby. "Oh, it's been amazing," Kaino enthusiastically said of the change. "I wouldn't say easy because the coaches definitely put in a lot of work and it's definitely challenging coming from player to coach because when you're a player, you worry about yourself, what's needed for you to be at your best come Saturday or come the weekend. 'Gnarly' The stand-out name among the 60 or so squad members Kaino works with at Stade Ernest-Wallon is France poster boy Antoine Dupont. Scrum-half Dupont will miss this weekend's blockbuster in Paris however as he continues to recover from a serious knee injury suffered in March. Centre Peato Mauvaka and flying wing Ange Capuozzo are also out of action. Dupont's childhood friend Paul Graou will again stand-in for the 28-year-old, having scored three tries in his past five games including one in last Friday's semi-final win over Bayonne. "He's improving. He works really hard to be able to get out there," Kaino said. "How could you not get out there and work when you're replacing one of the best players ever to lace up rugby boots? "He's driving the team really well and he's been able to put us into another final," he added. Standing in the way of Toulouse and a third-straight title are Bordeaux-Begles' superstar backs, including international wings Damian Penaud and Louis Bielle-Biarrey, who was pronounced "fit" on Wednesday following time out with concussion, as well as their monstrous set of forwards, led by Tonga captain Ben Tameifuna in the front row. "Big Ben. King of Tonga. He's got a million nicknames," Kaino joked. "They've been building really nicely and obviously they've proven that with their Champions Cup title. Kylian Mbappé is the big missing name at the start of the Club World Cup
While Real Madrid appeared well positioned to continue its run in the Club World Cup in the United States, the tournament turned into an ordeal for its star forward, Kylian Mbappé. Chelsea's Fernandez flying ahead of Benfica reunion at Club World Cup
The 24-year-old set up two goals in Chelsea's 3-0 win over Esperance of Tunisia which sent his team through to the last 16 and a date with the Portuguese giants in Charlotte this weekend. With England international Cole Palmer struggling for form, Fernandez has been Chelsea's key creative influence over the past few months. The Argentina star helped the Londoners qualify for the Champions League by claiming fourth place in the Premier League, as well as winning the Conference League in May. After Real Betis took the lead in the final, Fernandez inspired Chelsea's comeback by netting their first goal in an eventual 4-1 triumph in Poland. In 2025, Fernandez has scored and assisted a total of 14 goals, with Pedro Neto the next highest producer at Enzo Maresca's Chelsea with nine, and Palmer lagging behind with eight, along with youngster Tyrique George. As well as impressing against Esperance, Fernandez scored in Chelsea's 2-0 opening win in Atlanta against Los Angeles FC. "My goal against LAFC was my eighth of the season. That is a good number, it's good in one season and I am thankful to God for this. But for me, this is still just the beginning," Fernandez told Chelsea's website. "I'm always going to want more, I always want to do better. If I can do that, I will be helping the team. This is always on my mind. "It's why I work hard and try to improve, and with Enzo (Maresca), I am playing further forward, which has helped with my statistics. After an inconsistent start to life in London, a hernia problem derailed the second half of his 2023/24 season and then in July 2024 he was also criticised for singing an insulting song about France players with his Argentina team-mates. The midfielder has been linked with a possible departure from Chelsea but coach Maresca insisted the plan is for Fernandez to stay. "This season he has been very, very good. He can be even better next season starting from the first day," said Maresca this week. "So, nothing to say about (the) speculation. He is focused on us and that's the most important thing." Fernandez set up new Chelsea arrival Liam Delap for his first goal in the win over Esperance and gave the striker guidance for the months ahead. "I spoke to Enzo and he told me when he gets the ball to just run," explained Delap. "It was a great pass and luckily it went in."
