Public detain 27-year-old man after alleged gold shop robbery in Melaka
MELAKA, May 22 — A man was detained by members of the public after robbing a jewellery shop in Jalan Bunga Raya here today.
Melaka Tengah Police Chief ACP Christopher Patit said the 27-year-old suspect was handed over by members of the public to a team of police officers at 12.30pm.
'We received a call from an individual informing that a young man had been detained by the public after robbing a gold shop.
'Following that, a team of police officers from the Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) and D9 Branch of the Melaka Tengah District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD) went to the scene to detain the suspect,' he said in a statement.
Christopher stated that a body search of the suspect also found five gold chains weighing approximately 15.35 grammes and an iron hammer.
He added that a urine test found the suspect negative for drugs, and the young man was also sent to the Melaka Hospital for treatment for injuries to his legs, hands, and head before being placed in the lockup at Melaka Tengah Police Station for further investigations.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for robbery. — Bernama

UPSI crash: Motac issues show-cause letters to firms linked to incident under tourism law
PUTRAJAYA, June 13 — The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) has issued inspection notices and show-cause letters to several business entities involved in the accident on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik, Perak, on Monday. In a statement today, Motac said the action was taken after the ministry conducted an investigation under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482) after receiving a report of the tragedy involving students of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). 'Motac will also work with the Royal Malaysia Police, the Land Public Transport Agency and the Road Transport Department to complete the investigation in accordance with the provisions of the law so that appropriate punishment is imposed and the victims' families receive the appropriate protection. 'Further action will be taken after the investigation is completed,' said Motac. The statement said Motac also visited the victims and families involved in the incident that claimed 15 lives. Motac also stressed the ministry's commitment to ensuring that tourism activities in Malaysia are always carried out safely, ethically and beneficially for future generations. 'Motac expresses its condolences to all the families of victims and prays for the speedy recovery of all the injured victims,' the statement said. In the incident on Monday, 15 UPSI students died when a chartered bus they were travelling in from Jertih, Terengganu to the main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak overturned after being involved in a collision with a Perodua Alza car on JRTB. The accident also resulted in 33 individuals injured, including the bus driver and attendant as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. — Bernama

Singapore confers Distinguished Service Order on IGP Razarudin for bolstering police ties
SINGAPORE, June 13 — Malaysia's Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain was conferred the Distinguished Service Order by Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the Istana on Wednesday. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a statement on Friday that the Order, instituted in 1968, may be awarded in special circumstances to individuals who have performed acts of distinguished conduct outside Singapore. 'Under his leadership, the bilateral relationship between the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) and the SPF was strengthened, underpinned by close cooperation in the areas of investigation, intelligence exchanges, as well as capability building and training,' the statement said. The SPF said that Razarudin had emphasised the importance of close operational coordination between the two police forces, which had contributed to the fight against transnational crime, drug trafficking, and terrorism. Singapore's Acting Commissioner of Police, Lian Ghim Hua, said the SPF deeply values its longstanding and steadfast partnership with the RMP. 'This close cooperation has strengthened our response to evolving cross-border challenges. We will continue to work closely with the RMP to combat transnational crime, as well as enhance joint operational effectiveness,' Lian said in the statement. Two killed, six injured as car crashes into parked lorry on LTU Highway in Pahang
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Two people were killed and six others injured in an accident involving a car and a lorry at Kilometre 37 of the Lingkaran Tengah Utama (LTU) Highway near Kampung Chegar Perah near Lipis, Pahang, at around 5.30am today. Lipis District Police Chief Superintendent Ismail Man said the car, driven by a 45-year-old man, was carrying seven family members from Klang and was en route to Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab 2 in Kota Baru to visit relatives, according to a report published in Berita Harian today. The victims who died were identified as Roslawati Mat Daud, 50, and a six-year-old boy, Aqif Azfar Azman. 'Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries. 'The driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle before crashing into the rear of a lorry that was parked on the roadside,' he said in a statement today. Ismail said the 33-year-old lorry driver and his assistant had stopped by the roadside to relieve themselves. They were travelling from Melaka to Ketereh to deliver furniture. Both were unharmed in the incident. The car driver and five other family members were taken to Kuala Lipis Hospital for treatment. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Witnesses are urged to come forward to assist in the investigation.
