Hawaii Vicar General: We could see new Pope selected by end of May

Yahoo23-04-2025

HONOLULU (KHON2) – The loss of Pope Francis is hitting hard for about 300,000 Catholics throughout the state. Monsignor Gary Secor, the Vicar General of the Roman Catholic Church in Hawaii shared the moment when he met the Pope in person.
'As we were going to the library, before we went in, the person who was sort of handling us said something very interesting. He said when you go in and meet the Pope, please do not curtsy, do not bow, do not kiss his ring, Pope Francis doesn't like that. Just shake his hand. I thought 'oh that's interesting.' That kind of set the tone for how he was so warm and accepting of us as we met him,' said Monsignor Secor.
Monsignor Secor tells us selecting the next Pope doesn't take long and we could see one by the end of May.
'We've been doing this for centuries so there's quite a bit of protocol. I believe the funeral will be on Saturday. And soon after that, I think the first part of May, will be the Conclave. And the Cardinals will come throughout the world to Rome and meet at the Sistine Chapel in a confidential, secret meeting. And in that process with God's help, with the Holy Spirit, they discuss and choose the next Pope,' he explained.
A special memorial mass for Pope Francis is planned for Monday, April 28 at 6 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa in Honolulu.

MO State Rep. introduces bill to cut childhood poverty in half

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri State Representative, Ray Reed announced Monday a bill that seeks to cut childhood poverty in half for Missouri children. During a Missouri General Assembly special session, Reed introduced the 'Missouri Child Tax Credit' bill in hopes for the state to invest in Missouri's low-income and working-class families. Potential Royals move to Kansas sparks mixed reaction in Overland Park 'At a time when we're considering investing nearly a billion dollars to retain a football team, I believe we must also ask ourselves what kind of state we want to be. If we have the resources to build stadiums, we have the resources to build stronger futures for Missouri's kids,' Rep. Reed, said. The statement comes on the same day Jackson County legislators approved the 2025 Jackson County budget, which included investments in community needs such affordable housing and health equity, according to Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr. The child tax credit seeks to provide direct payments to low-income families with children under the age of 18-years-old. Kansas City's Country Club Plaza struggles with closures and empty shops In a release form Reed's office, it states the bill is modeled after the 2021 Biden-Harris expansion that lifted more than three million children out of poverty nationwide. 'This bill isn't just about alleviating poverty—it's about unlocking potential,' Reed said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Former Beaufort mayor to receive highest award in S.C.

BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) — A former mayor for the City of Beaufort will be crowned by South Carolina state representative Shannon Erickson with the highest award in South Carolina. Billy Keyserling will receive the Palmetto Award for his dedication to public service for over 50 years. Keyserling has worked on Capitol Hill, was a state legislature, a city councilman, reigned Beaufort for 12 years, and now runs two non-profit organizations. Keyserling told WSAV that he's received many awards in his lifetime, but this is one of the highest honors. 'I'm very excited about it. I'm honored. I'm humbled,' said Keyserling. 'I'm appreciative of Stacy Applegate, who basically, unbeknownst to me, started a campaign to talk to Representative Erickson and got a bunch of letters written by people I've worked with over the last 50 years. And I was selected to do it. So, I'd say honored, humbled and have a lot of gratitude for the people I've worked with over the years.' Keyserling said he chose to have the award presented at city hall, because that's the place he called his second home for many years and did some of his best work. The award will be presented on Tuesday, June 10 at Beaufort's city council meeting. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
