A man was killed and two others were injured in a crash in Meriden early Friday when a vehicle struck a bridge abutment.
The crash was reported at 1:43 a.m. in the area of South Colony Road and Powers Drive, according to Sgt. Michael Boothroyd of the Meriden Police Department.
Boothroyd said a preliminary investigation found that a 2007 Honda Accord was being driven north on South Colony Road when it collided head-on with an Amtrak train bridge abutment. All three occupants of the Accord were taken to an area hospital.
The driver, a 20-year-old man, was tended to by medics and members of the Meriden Fire Department. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Boothroyd. He has not been identified.
Boothroyd said the victim's family has been notified and have been cooperative with the investigation.
The two passengers suffered injuries not considered life-threatening and remained in the hospital as of Friday afternoon, Boothroyd said.
The bridge and train tracks were 'thoroughly inspected' and deemed safe for roadway traffic and train services, Boothroyd said. The road in the area of the crash was closed for about four hours while officials were at the scene.
The crash is being investigated by the Meriden Police Accident Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information has been asked to contact Sgt. M. Hartline at 203-630-6201.

Driver killed when Amtrak train strikes SUV in Empire, CHP reports

A driver was killed Monday afternoon when an SUV was struck by a southbound Amtrak train at a railroad crossing in Empire, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash happened around 1:26 p.m. on Yosemite Boulevard/Highway 132, just west of Santa Fe Avenue, the CHP said in a news release. Emergency personnel arrived to find the SUV fully engulfed in flames and the train stopped on the tracks. The driver of the Chevrolet SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. According to a preliminary investigation, the SUV was headed east on Yosemite Boulevard and approached the crossing while the warning systems — including the crossing arms, flashing red lights and audible alarms — were active. The driver allegedly entered the westbound lane to go around the lowered crossing arms and drove into the path of the train. The front of the train struck the driver's side of the SUV, causing the vehicle to be pushed in a southerly direction before catching fire, the CHP said. One passenger aboard the Amtrak train was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Investigators have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The incident remains under investigation. No identifying information about the driver has been released.

MODESTO — A driver died after being struck by an Amtrak train in Modesto, officials said Monday. It happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. along State Route 132 just west of Santa Fe Avenue. The collision resulted in the SUV catching fire. CHP said the driver was declared dead at the scene. A passenger on the train suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital. Investigators are still looking into why the driver attempted to pass through the activated crossing arms. Amtrak train 712 was traveling from Oakland to Bakersfield.

Man pleads no contest to manslaughter, DUI in Pioneer Dr fatal crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man accused of driving drunk when his SUV collided with a car in east Bakersfield has pleaded no contest to a charge of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to court records. Gabriel Coronel, 33, also pleaded no contest to DUI causing injury in connection with the fatal crash that occurred last year on Pioneer Drive east of Denison Lane, records show. He faces seven years and eight months in prison, prosecutors said. A sentencing hearing is scheduled next month. Early on Feb. 17, 2024, Coronel's Chevy Traverse collided with a Honda Accord. The Honda had four occupants. Three were found unconscious by California Highway Patrol officers, according to court documents, including a woman in the front passenger seat who was later pronounced dead. Coronel told investigators the Honda veered into his lane, but physical evidence revealed the westbound Chevy crossed the yellow line and collided with the eastbound Honda, according to the documents. Breath tests revealed Coronel's blood-alcohol content at 0.12 and 0.13%, above the 0.08% legal limit, documents said. The driver of the Honda was also intoxicated, documents said, and was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI charges. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
